Wake Up Dead Man, the new installment in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out series, will mark Jeremy Renner’s big-screen return after sustaining near-fatal injuries from a snowplow accident back in 2023. Despite the gravity of his injuries, Renner made a remarkable recovery, with Wake Up Dead Man being the first movie he filmed after the traumatic event. Speaking of the movie, the actor told Variety it felt great to return to the job he loves.
"Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery" was the first movie Jeremy Renner filmed after his near-death snow plow accident. He says "it felt great to be back" on a movie set with "people I love.

Jeremy Renner miraculously survived being run over by his 14,000-pound snow plow in 2023 while trying to save his nephew from harm. Although he previously detailed his difficult recovery at length, he spoke about how the cast of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” helped him recover, as it was the first film he shot after the accident.
“It’s a lot of support, man,” he said during an interview at Variety‘s TIFF Studio alongside his “Knives Out” costars. “It’s lovely to have it. There’s such a communion and camaraderie that happens, especially on a movie like this. This is not even really a movie to me, it’s more like a stage play. We’re always together, we’re always in each other’s faces, even when we’re acting. When you have 15 people on a camera, you spend a lot of time with them.

Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal have been wanting to make “The History of Sound” for five years. But the two actors were both in such demand that it kept being pushed back until they finally became available at the same time.
Now, O’Connor finds himself in the odd position of having to promote four movies coming out this fall. Is he tired? “Yeah, I am,” he said on Zoom just after the Telluride Film Festival. “I’ve maxed out a little bit.”
The two actors met during the pandemic, on Zoom, after O’Connor watched “Normal People” and like many of us, believed he was discovering an exciting young talent. He emailed his American agent: “You have to see this kid. He’s amazing.” His agent had already signed him. It turns out Mescal had been watching O’Connor, as well. The two got on famously, and have been chums ever since.

With Telluride in the rearview and Venice winding down, all eyes are turning to Toronto where the 50th edition of the city's vibrant — and well-attended — film festival kicks off on Thursday. This year's Toronto International Film Festival will feature many of the movies that have already made an awards season splash at previous fests, including Cannes favorites like It Was Just an Accident, Sentimental Value and Exit 8 as well as such Venice and/or Telluride hits as Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Hamnet, and The Smashing Machine.
But TIFF is also serving as the launching pad for a number of new awards hopefuls as they start their journey towards Oscar night.

The London Film Festival has added a number of titles to this year’s line-up, including Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grazia.
La Grazia will arrive in London following a debut bow in Venice. The film follows Mariano De Santis, a fictional President of the Italian Republic. A widower and a Catholic, he has a daughter, Dorotea, a legal scholar like himself. As his term draws to a close, amid uneventful days, two final duties arise: deciding on two delicate petitions for a presidential pardon. True moral dilemmas, which become tangled in ways that seem impossible to unravel, with his private life. Driven by doubt, he will have to decide. And, with a deep sense of responsibility, that is exactly what this remarkable Italian President will do.
The pic stars Toni Servillo and Anna Ferzetti. The movie is produced by Fremantle’s The Apartment in association with Numero 10 and PiperFilm.

The last edition of the Toronto Film Festival came and went with a shrug. Movie lovers would be forgiven if they’ve never heard of any of the fest’s high-profile world premieres, such as “Eden,” “Unstoppable,” “Nightbitch” and “Nutcrackers,” despite boasting stars like Jude Law, Sydney Sweeney, Jennifer Lopez, Amy Adams and Ben Stiller.
The unmemorable lineup stood in stark contrast to the glitzy affair over at the Venice Film Festival, which took place a week earlier and unveiled a slew of awards players and box office hits, including the Brazilian drama “I’m Still Here,” Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and “Babygirl” with Nicole Kidman. Along with the Cannes Film Festival, Venice has soared in popularity and notoriety as their North American counterparts — most notably Toronto and Sundance — have struggled to remain relevant.

It’s the most glorious time of the year! The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is kicking off once again, and for the sixteenth (!) year in a row, I’ll be there on behalf of JoBlo.com. My goal: hit at least twenty films over the festival’s run, which means I’ll be cranking out reviews pretty regularly. But among the countless titles playing this year—TIFF’s fiftieth edition, no less—here are the ten I’m most excited to see:
The Smashing Machine

Netflix has a set a limited theatrical release for Rian Johnson’ third Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, for Nov. 26 with a streaming date of Dec. 12.
It’s not clear yet how wide Knives Out 3 will be or whether the big circuits will play it. Knives Out movies have always played the Thanksgiving frame. While it’s par for the course for Netflix to have limited theatrical releases for some of its Q3 and Q4 titles to qualify for awards season, the streamer recently had a two-day play at all theaters (sans AMC) for Kpop Demon Hunters Singalong which made $19M according to sources with hard knowledge on ticket sales (not the $18M that’s been out there). AMC didn’t play Kpop since it didn’t have a theatrical window, but they will play Netflix’s upcoming Narnia movie from Greta Gerwig which will have a window.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will be getting a limited cinema release after all, before making its way to Netflix. Details below.
We already knew Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery wouldn’t be heading to cinemas, at least for very long. In August, we speculated that Netflix was scaling back the planned theatrical release of Wake Up Dead Man and that certainly seems to be the case.
Much like Guillermo Del Toro’s passion project Frankenstein, Wake Up Dead Man will head into cinemas for a very limited run, starting on 28th November. You’ll have two weeks to catch Benoit Blanc on the...

The third installment in Rian Johnson's Knives Out franchise is heading to theaters after all. However, there's a catch to Netflix's Wake Up Dead Man theatrical plans that fans won't be pleased about.
Netflix has announced that Wake Up Dead Man will hit theaters on Nov. 26, about two weeks before its streaming debut on Dec. 12. Unfortunately, the murder mystery threequel will only be released in select theaters, a release strategy that Netflix also used with the previous movie, 2022's Glass Onion. The streamer is typically against giving its original movies any sort of theatrical release outside the limited runs that are necessary to qualify for Oscar consideration. So far,...

There's something about this poster. It compels us. We are just a few months away from the return of Foghorn Leghorn in human form as Daniel Craig prepares to charm us with the wondrous man that is Benoit Blanc once again in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Story. The cast also includes Josh O'Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny, Daryl McCormack, and Thomas Haden Church. Not a bad haul of stars Rian Johnson put together for this day out, huh?
The striking poster sees Blanc peering into an open grave surrounded by the suspects, or the donut holes, in his latest case.

Every Benoit Blanc mystery from Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Rian Johnson imparts its own revelation; each tale offers a fresh gospel of intrigue. 2019’s Knives Out introduces the suited detective (played by Daniel Craig) at a cozy New England mansion, where a family’s greed boils over in the wake of its patriarch’s mysterious death. Its 2022 follow-up, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, skewers tech-world excess with heightened comedy on a Greek island.
Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery follows in this tradition, while turning the lens inward to explore the nature of belief. “This film charts [Blanc’s] most personal journey yet,” says the Academy Award-nominated Johnson. “He...

For the past few months, KPop Demon Hunters has been dominating Netflix's global charts, but a brand-new contender has emerged. Last week, the animated musical hit 236 million views, making it Netflix's most-watched movie of all time, surpassing Red Notice (2021), which has 230.9 million views. Still, a few Netflix releases have temporarily knocked the animated musical from the top of their weekly Global Top 10.
Among those were Tyler Perry's psychological thriller Straw, Charlize Theron's superhero sequel The Old Guard 2, Adam Sandler's sequel Happy Gilmore 2 – which held the top spot for two consecutive weeks – and, most recently, the romantic dramedy My Oxford Year. Even so, last week...

Fall festivals supply the nutrients for a rich diet of films for the next six months, all the way until Oscar night. Venice launched Wednesday with Francis Coppola paying tribute to his friend Werner Herzog. On Thursday, Telluride revealed its lineup, which plays over the Labor Day weekend.
He’s among the Telluride regulars who return for the summer-camp vibe in the mountains of Colorado. Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy usually throw a party. So does Muppet scion Lisa Henson. Oprah Winfrey is coming this year, even without a film, as are filmmakers Rian Johnson and Jason Reitman.
“Our community is a real community,” said festival director Julie Huntsinger in a phone interview with IndieWire. “And I want everybody to hang out together and have fun and watch.”
This year, Huntsinger wants to avoid the scheduling snafus that led so many loyal badge holders ($780 each) standing in line for hours without seeing the big films.
