Wake Up Dead Man, the new installment in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out series, will mark Jeremy Renner’s big-screen return after sustaining near-fatal injuries from a snowplow accident back in 2023. Despite the gravity of his injuries, Renner made a remarkable recovery, with Wake Up Dead Man being the first movie he filmed after the traumatic event. Speaking of the movie, the actor told Variety it felt great to return to the job he loves.

"Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery" was the first movie Jeremy Renner filmed after his near-death snow plow accident. He says "it felt great to be back" on a movie set with "people I love.

Jeremy Renner miraculously survived being run over by his 14,000-pound snow plow in 2023 while trying to save his nephew from harm. Although he previously detailed his difficult recovery at length, he spoke about how the cast of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” helped him recover, as it was the first film he shot after the accident.

“It’s a lot of support, man,” he said during an interview at Variety‘s TIFF Studio alongside his “Knives Out” costars. “It’s lovely to have it. There’s such a communion and camaraderie that happens, especially on a movie like this. This is not even really a movie to me, it’s more like a stage play. We’re always together, we’re always in each other’s faces, even when we’re acting. When you have 15 people on a camera, you spend a lot of time with them.

The 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is celebrating a major milestone this year. The fest kicked off on Thursday, September 4, and is running through September 14, the festival will showcase a massive program of 209 feature films, 6 Classics, 10 Primetime selections, and 66 shorts.

This year’s festival commenced with a focus on emerging talent, featuring the world premieres from three first-time directors. Mac Eldridge and Tom Dean’s Charlie Harper, starring Emilia Jones and Nick Robinson, and John Early’s directorial debut, Maddie’s Secret, will open the Discovery program. The lineup also includes a special tribute to a comedic legend with the world premiere of Colin Hanks’ documentary, John Candy: I Like Me.

Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal have been wanting to make “The History of Sound” for five years. But the two actors were both in such demand that it kept being pushed back until they finally became available at the same time.

Now, O’Connor finds himself in the odd position of having to promote four movies coming out this fall. Is he tired? “Yeah, I am,” he said on Zoom just after the Telluride Film Festival. “I’ve maxed out a little bit.”

The two actors met during the pandemic, on Zoom, after O’Connor watched “Normal People” and like many of us, believed he was discovering an exciting young talent. He emailed his American agent: “You have to see this kid. He’s amazing.” His agent had already signed him. It turns out Mescal had been watching O’Connor, as well. The two got on famously, and have been chums ever since.

Exclusive: Jimmy Tatro (Real Bros of Simi Valley, American Vandal) and Fortune Feimster (Crushing It, Fubar, The Mindy Project) have joined the series regular cast of Netflix’s untitled Will Ferrell golf series, working opposite Ferrell and Molly Shannon.

The 10-episode series follows Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins (Ferrell), a fictional golf legend. Shannon will play his foul-mouthed ex-wife, Stacy.

Star Wars Starfighter was announced this year at Star Wars Celebration to the excitement of countless fans. Prime Video has officially announced that Emmy-nominated actress Sophie Turner will take on the role of the legendary adventurer Lara Croft in its highly anticipated new series, ‘Tomb Raider.’

The series, adapted from the globally renowned video game franchise, is set to begin production on January 19, 2026, with Amazon MGM Studios confirming the date.

With Telluride in the rearview and Venice winding down, all eyes are turning to Toronto where the 50th edition of the city's vibrant — and well-attended — film festival kicks off on Thursday. This year's Toronto International Film Festival will feature many of the movies that have already made an awards season splash at previous fests, including Cannes favorites like It Was Just an Accident, Sentimental Value and Exit 8 as well as such Venice and/or Telluride hits as Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, Hamnet, and The Smashing Machine.

But TIFF is also serving as the launching pad for a number of new awards hopefuls as they start their journey towards Oscar night.

The London Film Festival has added a number of titles to this year’s line-up, including Paolo Sorrentino’s La Grazia.

La Grazia will arrive in London following a debut bow in Venice. The film follows Mariano De Santis, a fictional President of the Italian Republic. A widower and a Catholic, he has a daughter, Dorotea, a legal scholar like himself. As his term draws to a close, amid uneventful days, two final duties arise: deciding on two delicate petitions for a presidential pardon. True moral dilemmas, which become tangled in ways that seem impossible to unravel, with his private life. Driven by doubt, he will have to decide. And, with a deep sense of responsibility, that is exactly what this remarkable Italian President will do.

Running from October 8 to 9, Lff will run feature 27 World Premieres, 11 International Premieres, and 20 European Premieres.

Moss & Freud will screen as a world premiere. The film is a dramatized account of when supermodel Kate Moss decided to sit for famed British artist Lucian Freud. The experience deeply impacted and transformed both of their lives.

Hamnet will be an Lff European premiere. The film will arrive from Telluride, where it has received positive notices. Mescal stars as Shakespeare and Buckley is his wife in the pic. The film is about her struggles to come to terms with the loss of their only son, Hamnet.

The full lineup for this year’s BFI London Film Festival has been unveiled with Noah Baumbach’s George Clooney-starring Jay Kelly and Chloé Zhao’s buzzy Shakespeare tale Hamnet among the additions.

On Wednesday, a total of 247 titles — comprised of features, shorts, series and immersive works — from 79 countries were confirmed to premiere at this year’s festival, running Oct. 8-19. Rian Johnson’s next Knives Out installment, Wake Up Dead Man, was previously announced as the opening gala and Julia Jackson’s 100 Nights of Hero is set to close the fest.

The headline galas are jam-packed with Hollywood’s top talent. Kicking off the American Express Gala is the U.K. premiere of the Brendan Fraser-led Japanese drama Rental Family from Hikari, while the Patron’s Gala at this year’s fest is H Is For Hawk from Philippa Lowthorpe with Claire Foy and Brendan Gleeson.

The 52nd Telluride Film Festival is now in the books. Netflix has confirmed that Rian Johnson’s imminent TIFF world premiere Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will get a two-week US theatrical run in select cinemas starting on November 26.

It remained unclear how many sites the whodunnit ensemble led by Daniel Craig as the redoubtable Benoit Blanc will play in, or theatrical plans for other territories. The film will debut on the service on December 12, as previously announced.

Netflix has a set a limited theatrical release for Rian Johnson’ third Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, for Nov. 26 with a streaming date of Dec. 12.

It’s not clear yet how wide Knives Out 3 will be or whether the big circuits will play it. Knives Out movies have always played the Thanksgiving frame. While it’s par for the course for Netflix to have limited theatrical releases for some of its Q3 and Q4 titles to qualify for awards season, the streamer recently had a two-day play at all theaters (sans AMC) for Kpop Demon Hunters Singalong which made $19M according to sources with hard knowledge on ticket sales (not the $18M that’s been out there). AMC didn’t play Kpop since it didn’t have a theatrical window, but they will play Netflix’s upcoming Narnia movie from Greta Gerwig which will have a window.

The BFI’s London Film Festival has set a buzzy lineup of names, including veteran actor Daniel Day-Lewis, for this year’s screen talk Q&a sessions.

Day-Lewis, who returns to acting this year with Anemone, will take part in Q&a sessions alongside Richard Linklater, Yorgos Lanthimos, Lynne Ramsay, Tessa Thompson, Jafar Panahi, and Chloé Zhao.

This year’s London Film Festival takes place from 8 October to 19 October. The full festival programme will be revealed on 3 September.

The opening film is Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
