Ishinomori's original Cyborg 009 manga began serialization in Shonen Gahosha's Weekly King magazine on July 19, 1964, which marks today as its 61st anniversary. Image
Original Mighty Morphin Power Rangershead writer explains the series' big casting mistake.

Per Entertainment Weekly, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers head writer Tony Oliver discussed some of the unfortunate decisions the series made with regard to its casting. Oliver explained that it wasn't until after the series went on the air that anyone noticed "the Black character the Black Ranger and the Asian character the Yellow Ranger." Oliver recalled, "my assistant who pointed it out in a meeting one day... It was such a glaring mistake." Oliver also stated that "none of us are thinking stereotypes," explaining that any potentially problematic casting choices were simply not on the minds of the crew at the time of production.

It's True: The Director of Madoka Magica Wants to Tackle a New Anime
Image
Originally released in 2011, Puella Magi Madoka Magica was a brilliant deconstruction of the magical girl anime genre, capturing the attention of audiences worldwide. The series has since expanded into sequels and an ongoing movie franchise. Meanwhile, key creative figures behind the show, including director Akiyuki Shinbo—also known for The SoulTaker—are reportedly exploring new projects, hinting at future creative endeavors beyond Madoka Magica.

Recently, Akiyuki Shinbo revealed that he’d like to adapt a long-running manga, possibly as a two-cour or year-long broadcast. He also named several manga he’d like to adapt one day. These titles, though relatively obscure in the West, were beloved by Japanese children in the 1960s and 1970s: Android Kikaider by Shotaro Ishinomori, Guerrilla High – Gakuen Taikutsu Otoko by Go Nagai, and Babel II by Mitsuteru Yokoyama.

Power Rangers Lost Galaxy Has A Connection To A Classic Sci-Fi Satire
Image
"Power Rangers" was not just one of the biggest cultural phenomena of the 1990s, but it was also part of a wave of shows that made Japanese pop culture huge in the U.S. together with "Pokémon," "Sailor Moon" and "Dragon Ball Z." The show, created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy in collaboration with Shotaro Ishinomori, was mostly composed of reused footage from Ishinomori's hugely influential and long-running tokusatsu series "Super Sentai." The series revolves around a team of youths trained to morph into superheroes known as Rangers, who fight evildoers and occasionally pilot giant mecha called Zords (which can combine to form even bigger mecha). As /Film decided in our previous reassessment, "Power Rangers" is good, actually, even setting our nostalgia aside.

Part of what made the show interesting in its early years was that the first six seasons of "Power Rangers" told a serialized story. This started...

Power Rangers In Order: How To Watch Every Movie & TV Series
Image
The 1990s were a good time to be a fan of Japanese pop culture. After the '80s made gamers out of millions of kids thanks to Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, it was the '90s when anime started to become mainstream in the U.S. (even if kids didn't know it at the time) thanks to "Pokémon" becoming a worldwide cultural phenomenon. (That and "Sailor Moon" and "Dragon Ball Z" turning kids and teens into lifelong fans of the medium.)

But it wasn't just animation. In live-action, "Power Rangers" brought tokusatsu fun to the West and started a hugely influential superhero franchise that, yes, is still very good. Created by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy in collaboration with Shotaro Ishinomori, the long-running property is mostly made out of reused footage from Ishinomori's iconic tokusatsu series "Super Sentai." It revolves around a team of youths trained to morph into...

Code Geass Director Debunks the Biggest Myth About the Series That Changes Everything: ‘The base pattern isn’t Gundam’
Image
Ever since Gorō Taniguchi’s Code Geass came out in 2006, anime fans have found an uncanny resemblance between the series and the prominent series Mobile Suit Gundam by Yoshiyuki Tomino that started in 1979. Be it the characters of the series or the narrative, Code Geass feels like it has drawn inspiration from the science fiction series and followed in similar footsteps.

Although the theme and the base storyline of the two series are completely different, certain elements and characters of Code Geass draw parallels with Mobile Suit Gundam. Even the dynamics between Lelouch and Suzaku felt like a varied representation of Gundam’s protagonists, Amuro Ray and Char.

However, last year Taniguchi made a major revelation and put an end to the discourse about Code Geass and Gundam’s similarities. He also revealed the difference between Lelouch and Amuro’s characters.

“I halved them and used that as an initial basis”: The One Movie That Inspired Akira’s Iconic Motorcycle and it’s a No-Brainer
Image
Akira is not only famous in the anime and manga sphere but also pop-culture in general. Critics and movie directors alike refer to Akira as one of the greatest and most influential films of the past 30 years. So it’s no wonder fans discredited Stephen Spielberg and George Lucas for turning the film down because it wouldn’t suit western audiences.

According to Manga Entertainment co-creator Andy Frain, Akira shaped modern sci-fi as people know it today. Films like Midnight Special, Looper, The Matrix, Chronicle, Inception, and even the TV show Stranger Things, all borrowed thematically and stylistically from Akira. In fact, two of those five movies even feature a child with destructive telekinetic powers as one of the main plot points.

Studio Ghibli & Kamen Rider Designer Unite for New Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind Release
Image
In Hayao Miyazaki's titular manga and anime film, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, audiences were introduced to a one-of-a-kind world populated with gigantic insects. Now, Studio Ghibli's official shop has partnered with Kamen Rider creature designer Takayuki Takeya to create a series of hyper-realistic, palm-sized action figures inspired by one of Nausicaa's fictional insect species.

As detailed on Ghibli's online storefront, Donguri Sora, Takeya worked alongside professional sculptor Tsuneyuki Ida to recreate Nausicaa's Ushiabu insects with "realistic and lifelike" designs. As shown below, the models are meticulously detailed, with careful attention to the details on the wings, legs, face and outer carapace. Additionally, the legs and wings are jointed, allowing them to be positioned in various ways. There are three versions total, -- "Original," "Movie Color" and "Clear" -- all of which measure approximately 65 mm (or 2.5 inches) lengthwise. To recreate the illusion of flight, each...

‘Message from Space’ Blu-ray Review (Masters of Cinema)
Image
Stars: Vic Morrow, Sonny Chiba, Etsuko Shihomi, Philip Casnoff, Peggy Lee Brennan, Tetsurô Tanba, Mikio Narita, Makoto Satô, Seizô Fukumoto, Hiroyuki Sanada | Written by Kinji Fukasaku, Shotaro Ishinomori, Hirô Matsuda | Directed by Kinji Fukasaku

Message from Space, directed by Kinji Fukasaku, is a Japanese science fiction film that blends traditional space opera tropes with unique cultural elements, delivering a visually captivating yet narratively uneven experience. Released in the wake of the monumental success of Star Wars, this film ambitiously seeks to carve out its own niche within the genre.

One of the standout features of Message from Space is its visual presentation. The film showcases an impressive array of special effects for its time, with meticulously designed spacecraft and vibrant alien landscapes that reflect a distinctively Japanese aesthetic. The miniature models and practical effects, though not as polished as those in Hollywood blockbusters, possess a charming quality that adds to the film’s retro-futuristic appeal.

“Normal work didn’t appeal me”: Death Note Creator Changed Their Entire Career Out of Desperate Need for Survival

In the world of anime, there are childhood classics like Pokémon, Dragon Ball, and Naruto, and then there’s Death Note. Ever since the anime premiered in 2006, it solidified its status as a cultural icon, earning itself the honorable Animation of the Year award in 2007. The series stands apart from the other series in the Shonen genre because it does not rely on fast-paced action sequences to keep its audience hooked. Instead, it features a tug-of-war psychological warfare between Light Yagami and L.

Death Note is probably the most renowned work by Tsugumi Ohba, as the manga series was always a step ahead, forcing its reader to give their complete attention, or else they’ll lose the thread that weaves the story together. Film Review: Kamen Rider J (1994) by Keita Amemiya
Image
“Kamen Rider Zo” (1993) was a remarkable addition to Keita Amemiya's expanding filmography. Despite a condensed runtime, the overall direction and execution were incredibly strong, which made up for that; hence, it remains one of the most favored pieces of media in the beloved superhero's extensive franchise and one of the director's finest films. It balanced fun sci-fi while respectfully honoring the thought-provoking themes the franchise is known for with a gritty edge, not to mention great creature designs. For Amemiya's second rendition of the cyber-enhanced grasshopper protagonist, he would switch gears with “Kamen Rider J,” a decent, if somewhat underwhelming, follow-up.

A hero's journey is not without its trials and tribulations. But, some of the world's greatest sagas talk of destiny as something set in stone. From Greek mythology to the Old Testament, readers can trace "The Chosen Hero" trope to ancient literature, proving that the search for glory is eternal.

10 Most Underrated Anime Series Streaming on Crunchyroll
Image
Crunchyroll boasts one of the biggest streaming libraries for anime around, and that includes some truly underrated gems. Over the past decade, Crunchyroll has quickly risen to become one of the biggest anime streaming services. In addition to typically getting the rights to the vast majority of anime that release each season, not to mention occasionally financing their own shows, they have an incredibly massive catalog of older anime, so if someone wants to watch either a recent hit or an old favorite, they’ll likely have to look to Crunchyroll.

That being said, there are many anime on Crunchyroll that people don’t pay attention to. Some of the anime listed here are underrated for never making an impact despite their high quality, and others are listed here for being big at one point, but ultimately not having the staying power to retain relevancy in the years following their conclusion.

10 Anime Adaptations That Nobody Remembers
Image
Anime has always been a home for adaptations, with many of the earliest anime shows and movies adapting popular manga, folk tales, and novels. This tradition hasn't slowed down with time, with a good chunk of each new anime season being made up of adaptations of popular manga series. But it isn't just manga, anime's inherent flexibility as a medium means that many beloved stories from other mediums have received anime adaptations.

However, many of these anime adaptations have been forgotten. There can be many reasons for this. Sometimes a show is rejected by viewers, who opt to push the show out of their memory and never talk about it. Sometimes, an adaption only has a limited release or is released unusually, meaning many viewers never hear about it. Or, often, the simple passage of time leads to an adaption fading from the public consciousness.

Godzilla in Shin Godzilla (2016)
When looking at some special effects-heavy films that have come out of Japan in recent years, the “Shin Japan Heroes Universe” has graced audiences with some of the more unique and higher-quality tokusatsu titles in a long time. In particular, the live-action movies from this ongoing collaborative series are more than just standard reboots of long-existing franchises. “Shin Godzilla” and “Shin Ultraman” were clever reimaginings that modernized their respective franchises while preserving the themes each one embodied. Hideaki Anno celebrates the legacy of yet another groundbreaking series for the latest installment of these reboots as he delivers a spectacular action-packed emotional rollercoaster of a feature with his new film “Shin Kamen Rider.”

“Shin Kamen Rider” is the 50th-anniversary celebration of the classic 1970s television series “Kamen Rider” and its manga counterpart of the same name, both created by legendary manga artist and writer Shotaro Ishinomori. This time, Anno directs solo...

‘Shin Kamen Rider’ Review – An Emotional Reimagining of the Grandfather of Tokusatsu’s Origin Story
Image
After reimagining two other larger-than-life Japanese icons, Hideaki Anno naturally sought out another tokusatsu juggernaut to complete his “Shin” trilogy. And after the success of both Shin Godzilla and Shin Ultraman, fans of the filmmaker and/or Kamen Rider were curious to see how the grandfather of tokusatsu television would be updated. The final product ends up being more low-risk than Anno’s past projects, but Shin Kamen Rider is also one of his most heartfelt works to date.

Kamen Rider is certainly no stranger to reinvention. Despite the many entries in this long-running franchise, Anno goes back to the very beginning for Shin Kamen Rider’s story. Much like in the original TV series created by Shōtarō Ishinomori, the Kamen Rider seen here is a force of good with a dark origin. However, the movie reenvisions the terrorist organization Shocker as Shocker (an abbreviation for Sustainable Happiness Organization with...

Rider Kick! The Horrors and Dark Fantasy of the 1990s ‘Kamen Rider’ Films
Image
While Kamen Rider is now a fixture of Japanese television, the long-running franchise went off the air several times between 1971 and 2000. The longest break was in the ‘90s, but there wasn’t a complete drought; the brave hero lived on in a strand of standalone films.

The 1950s is widely regarded as Japan’s golden age of filmmaking, however the V-Cinema period helped save the industry during the country’s economic bubble. This revitalizing and distinct era of direct-to-video films, roughly taking place between ‘89 and ‘95, celebrated Kamen Rider’s twentieth anniversary with one of the bleakest entries: Makoto Tsuji’s Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue. While a severe departure from Shōtarō Ishinomori’s creation, this ‘92 film is aimed at fans of the original TV show. Since they were all older, it only made sense to age Kamen Rider’s story as well.

In the classic series, Kamen Rider was created when a terrorist organization,...

Dragon Ball Super Foreshadowed Gamma 1 and 2's Arcs
Image
The following contains spoilers for the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie and Chapter 92 of the Dragon Ball Super manga by Akira Toriyama, now available in English from Viz Media.

Chapter 92 of the Dragon Ball Super manga introduced readers to Gamma 1, the android twin of the previously-seen Gamma 2. Fans who watched Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will know about these two androids and what becomes of them. But this is not the only way to find out; Gamma 1 and Gamma 2's designs foreshadow their arc, as both characters draw inspiration from a legendary tokusatsu franchise.

Gamma 1 and 2's designs heavily reference the legendary Kamen Rider franchise. Created by Shotaro Ishinomori, the franchise debuted in 1971 and is still running today. While it's had many iconic heroes, the first two Kamen Riders -- Kamen Rider Ichigo and Kamen Rider Nigo, often collectively called the Double Riders -- remain the most iconic. Here's...

Film Review: Kamen Rider Zo (1993) by Keita Amemiya
Image
With the recent hit series “Kamen Rider Black Sun” and Hideaki Anno’s upcoming film, “Shin Kamen Rider,” Kamen Rider continues to flourish as one of Japan’s most popular and beloved tokusatsu characters. Created in the imaginative mind of manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori, the franchise began in 1971 with a successful television and manga series; the rest is history. Since then, the insectoid motorcycle-riding superhero has been reimagined in countless ways throughout the years. While not as frequent as appearances in tv shows, the franchise has also seen its fair share of movies. With the upcoming theatrical release of “Shin Kamen Rider,” it’s fascinating to look back on how Ishinomori’s creation has been depicted in cinema throughout the years. Generally speaking, the character’s track record in the film has ranged from serviceable to lackluster. Some, like “Kamen Rider: The First,” is at best a passable viewing experience,...
