The film follows small town artist Charley (Alex Hurt), a tortured man whose drinking binges blur with his sneaking suspicion that he might likely be a werewolf. He distances himself from those he loves and sinks deeper into solitude, his flashes of memory of his nighttime grisly acts manifested through his artwork.

Fessenden tells us, “I am interested in finding new truths in the classic monster tropes of my youth. The essence of each creature dictates the milieu of the film, and of course, the werewolf is both out of control and regretful so that duality shaped my story.

Horror Highlights: Unicorn Wars, Blackout, The Curse
Image
Unicorn Wars: "It’s Bambi meets Apocalypse Now in this provocative and strangely beautiful horror comedy from acclaimed filmmaker and illustrator Alberto Vazquez (Birdboy: The Forgotten Children), who uses its outrageous candy-colored premise to explore religious zealotry, the tortured legacies of military fascism, and the depths of the soul.

For ages, teddy bears have been locked in an ancestral war against their sworn enemy, the unicorns, with the promise that victory will complete the prophecy and usher in a new era. Aggressive, confident teddy bear Bluet and his sensitive, withdrawn brother Tubby could not be more different. As the rigors and humiliation of teddy bear bootcamp turn to the psychedelic horrors of a combat tour in the Magic Forest, their complicated history and increasingly strained relationship will come to determine the fate of the entire war."

Yellow Veil Pictures announced today they have boarded world sales on Blackout, Larry Fessenden’s werewolf horror film that’s currently in post-production, and have released the first teaser poster. The film wrapped principal photography in the fall in New York’s Hudson Valley and will hit the festival circuit later this year.

Yellow Veil Pictures Boards World Sales Rights on Larry Fessenden’s Werewolf Horror Film ‘Blackout,’ Drops Teaser Poster (Exclusive)
Image
Yellow Veil Pictures announced it has boarded world sales on Larry Fessenden’s upcoming horror film “Blackout,” and also released the film’s first teaser poster. The film, which is currently in post-production, will begin the festival circuit later in 2023 after finishing its photography in Hudson Valley, New York this past fall.

“Blackout” depicts a painter who, convinced he is a werewolf, creates chaos in a small town at each full moon.

The horror film joins Fessenden’s own “monsterverse,” with the New York-based actor and filmmaker’s vampire-themed breakout feature “Habit” (1995) and Frankenstein-inspired “Depraved” (2019).

“Blackout” is the second partnership between Yellow Veil Pictures, a New York City and Los Angeles-based film sales and distribution company, and Glass Eye Pix, an American independent film studio Fessenden founded where he serves as CEO. The two joined forces on world sales for “Depraved,” which was released by IFC Midnight in the United States.

Tar Pit (2015)
Attention, Filmmakers: Don't Panic on an Indie Film Set
Tar Pit (2015)
Things will go wrong on an indie film set. As a producer, or anyone in a leadership role, the key to solving problems is: Don't Panic! This was pivotal for me as a new producer on the set of "Tar Pit" (2015). Potential disasters came at me a mile a minute, but recalling this simple rule allowed me to move (most of) them swiftly aside—even on that day in June of 2014 when we shot "Tar Pit"'s last gun battle at an absolutely revolting pig farm and slaughtering field deep in the country of northern New York state. Hot, dusty air carried the stink of rotting pig carcasses over junked trailers, over putrid milk feeding troughs, over masses of hogs, living and dead. It was a location that director and seasoned indie filmmaker, the brilliant J. Christian Ingvordsen, had arranged for our crime drama. Our gifted Dp and screenwriter Matthew Howe was unfazed.

J. Christian Ingvordsen
Attention, Filmmakers: Here's How to Maximize Cool, Organic Locations
J. Christian Ingvordsen
We had a few cool, organic locations in and around Bovina, New York (way upstate), where the dauntless and masterfully innovative indie filmmaking pair, director J. Christian Ingvordsen and Dp/screenwriter Matthew Howe (along with myself, the newbie producer), filmed our rural crime drama "Tar Pit." There in the northern Catskills, we knew of a trailer-park-esque pig farm and slaughtering field that couldn't have been art directed with more genius than by the blood-spattered pig farmer/butcher who owned the place. We also had access to a gorgeous, Adirondack camp-style mansion, which cost a wonderfully small fee to rent for the day. Its sumptuous interior served as the lavish home of our country drug king pin. In terms of aesthetics and versatility, one of our best locations was a crumbling, abandoned, colonial Georgian mansion built in 1912. That old stone mansion worked perfectly for a drug lab, a mechanic's workshop and for one of our gunfights.

O'Horten
Release Date: May 15

Director/Writer: Bent Hamer

Cinematographer: John Christian RosenlundStarring: Baard Owe, Espen Skjønberg, Githa Nørby

Studio/Run Time: Sony Pictures Classics, 90 mins.

Arresting cinematography fuels quirky character study

Mainstream cinema has experienced a noteworthy decline in starring roles for seasoned actors since the ’60s and ’70s. In beautifully shot character analysis O’Horten, Norwegian director Bent Hamer (Factotum) shows there’s still vibrant intrigue to be mined from our golden years. The film trails a stoic locomotive engineer (Baard Owe) who succumbs to retirement, wishing his life could remain as frozen as the icy mountains he crossed in years past. Lost and reborn, Horten embarks on a series of random misadventures that charmingly illustrate the miracle of spontaneity. The film’s environmental cinematography provides a lonely mirror of whitewashed desolation for the title character’s odyssey, reflecting as much splendor as melancholy in the fairytale streets of Oslo.
