The movie is decent up until the last 30 minutes, but then it all falls apart with several unrealistic developments, and an unsatisfying non-ending. It also lacks the subtle comedy of the Korean original from 2014. There was a Chinese remake in 2017 as well. I watched the original Korean movie and the Chinese remake back to back a few years ago, and now I've seen this Japanese remake as well. Honestly...I really hope this is the last remake, because in the end, the Korean original still remains superior in pretty much every way. So my advice is still to just go and watch that. It has a much better ending as well.
I don't know why this is so highly rated, or why everyone else seems to love it. Is the rating based only on faithfulness to the books, rather than basing it on how good it is on its own, as a story? It can be as faithful to the books as it wants, that doesn't matter if the original story itself is boring and uninteresting. Smalltime hick towns where all the locals know each other, cops and mayors are corrupt etc is a supremely boring setting and setup, and the local gangsters aren't interesting villains. It's so damn cliche and uninteresting...I'll never understand the obsession Americans seems to have with this particular brand of setting or story. I could only make it through the first 4 episodes of S1 before I said to myself, "screw this". I was just to bored to care anymore at that point. Set things in a bigger city, with mob type villains that are actually dangerous and powerful, like in a lot of action movies. That's way more interesting and entertaining. Speaking of which, there is way too little actual action in this. The prison fight in the first episode gave me hope that there would be a lot more of the same, but there's waaay too little. So to sum it up: boring characters, boring story, too little action, and a VERY boring setting. Props to the main actor playing Reacher though. He's perfect for the role. All in all though, I don't really get the hype, and although it's been many years, and I barely remember anything from it, I am still none the less pretty sure I enjoyed the Tom Cruise movies more, when I watched those way back.
