I had low expectations for this and thus was not disappointed. It is not the days of high adventure that we live in, and fantasy is sacrificed in the altar of political correctness. So... we got a mild uninspired tv episode instead of an epic movie. We all knew this was coming, but perhaps getting the foot through the door is the beginning of something better. Unlikely but hope always dies last. Overall the actors are fine, the direction is low budget tv movie level, the set and costumes are very well made and the music probably was inspired by the conan game (which is a good thing). Looking forward to the sequel.
I'll begin by saying that I am a huge Horror fan and have successfully published an award winning Horror series. I have watched almost every horror movie out there, and I had extremely high expectations about this one. Way back, the trailer looked just right, and the cast was very impressive. However after watching the actual movie everything turned upside down. I did not imagine that Nosferatu could become a boring movie, but it did! At times I found my self checking my phone and "how much longer". The photography is the best thing about this movie. Other than that, the awesome cast did not succeed in performing the dialogues given, so I am blaming that 100% on poor writing. The director was also not at his best to my surprise, as he is generally a great director and I love his movies! Perhaps there were some factors unknown to us viewers that worked against the movie, so it is out of pace, and practically a little boring. Better luck next time I suppose.
When I watched this I was thinking this is great for a low budget student film. It was not till later that I noticed that it was directed by Soderbergh! Well to be honest thinking back the direction was ok, with nice camera angles and general flow. No real spooky atmosphere, more like a real-estate quality video with everything looking perfect and lit up All the time, but perhaps that's what he was going for. It's a nice house and I'd love to live in it.
Anyways...without any spoilers...the main issue with this movie is the script and complete lack of SFX.
Let's start with the Script. The script is completely void of depth, making the story boring, straightforward and predictable. Originally I was excited because I thought this would be a big budget re-make of the Great 2010 "The Presence" with Mira Sorvino. No such luck! This script fails in every way to make me care about the protagonists, so in the end...I am fine with the outcome. No big deal. Didn't shed any tears. (Keeping it generic cause I don't want to spoil it for you...)
Regarding the SFX. When a movie does not have a working script, the SFX could save the day. Especially in a GHOST movie. No such luck though, as the one scene with ghost "interaction" looks like it was created with a phone app - at best! This movie is one of these rare occasions where SFX was desperately needed to save the day.
But lets not forget the acting. I can't blame these people for trying to work with what they were given, and they would probably be good in something else. I was especially surprised with how bad the Psychic character was written, inspired somewhat from other way better movies such as Insidious or Poltergeist.
Overall this is not a very good movie, but don't take my word for it! Check it out!
