Historian and broadcaster David Olusoga, a University of Manchester professor of public history, has launched a production company called Hillgate Films.

The company said Thursday that it would “focus on developing and producing innovative and thought-provoking history-focused documentaries, formats and series, both with, and without, Olusoga as on-screen talent.”

The company launch comes with support from BBC Studios in the form of a development deal that, according to the firm, “will reinforce growth ambitions in return for a first look [at] distribution rights.”

Hillgate Films will operate as a co-producer rather than a stand-alone producer “to allow Olusoga to focus on fewer, more ambitious projects,” the firm highlighted. “By working as a co-producer, Hillgate can collaborate with a range of established partners on larger-scale projects while leaving Olusoga the creative freedom to concentrate on the content itself, rather than the day-to-day management of a production company.”

Jane Rosenthal is taking the pulse of the nonfiction feature space — and it doesn’t look good. The mega-producer and Tribeca co-founder told Variety during a recent interview that she is “worried” about how documentaries are faring, especially amid the current political climate and rise in streaming.

When asked how the “business” of documentary films are going — citing how the Tribeca Festival is known for spotlighting pioneering docs — Rosenthal lamented that perhaps the golden age of political documentaries has passed.

“I’m worried about that space,” Rosenthal said. “Fewer places are buying hard-hitting documentaries. If it’s about true crime, you’ll get a deal someplace. The bigger platforms — Netflix and Amazon — want more celebrity stories and sports stories. But for political stories, it’s harder to find a home.”

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) says that it is ready to work with the Trump administration on a solution to dwindling U.S. film and television production, but not at the expense of other global territories.

In response to Trump’s announcement that he planned to impose a 100% tariff on films made outside the U.S., IATSE President Matthew D. Loeb called Monday for “a balanced federal response to return film and television jobs.”

The union represents over 168,000 workers in the entertainment industry across the U.S. and Canada. In his statement, Loeb made it clear that any potential solution to the U.S. production exodus should not cause harm to the country’s neighbor to the north, as these tariffs almost certainly would.

Updated: Donald Trump told reporters that there will be a meeting with entertainment industry representatives, as he and White House officials took a more cautious tone to his proposal for a 100% tariff on movie imports.

“I’m not looking to hurt the industry; I want to help the industry,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “We’re going to meet with the industry. I want to make sure they’re happy with it, because we’re all about jobs.”

He did not say who he or others at the White House would meet with or when meetings might take place.

On Friday, April 25, the court handed down Santos’ sentence.

The doc, which premiered at Sundance 2025, charts the rise of house music. The film recounts how the Disco Sucks movement led to the infamous Disco Demolition Night at Chicago’s Comiskey Park, which resulted in thousands of people throwing records, mostly by Black artists, into a bonfire. The doc highlights Vince Lawrence, who was working as an usher at Demolition Night. Lawrence reveals how the event led him to become one of the founding innovators of house music.

Lots of Americans tuned in to see what President Donald Trump has in mind for his second term in office: 36.6 million viewers watched Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday, Nielsen has announced, marking a three-year high for the annual speech. (Note: A President’s first speech to Congress is not technically considered a “State of the Union” speech, but instead referred to as an Address to a Joint Session of Congress.)

President Donald Trump’s first address to Congress of his term drew an audience larger than three of those by his predecessor, Joe Biden, but also smaller than any from Trump’s first term.

According to Nielsen, 36.63 million people watched the 100-minute speech across 15 networks. That’s about 14 percent more viewers than Biden’s final State of the Union last year (32.23 million viewers) on 14 cable and broadcast outlets.

The numbers fell short, however, of any address from Trump’s first term. His four addresses to a joint session of Congress averaged 44.3 million viewers, with a low of 37.17 million in 2020. (The first speech to Congress of an incoming president’s term is not technically a State of the Union address.)

The 15 broadcast and cable outlets airing the speech were ABC, CBS, CNN, CNNe, Fox, Fox Business, Fox News, Merit Street, MSNBC, NBC, Newsmax, Newsnation, PBS, Telemundo and Univision.

Donald Trump’s address to Congress reached an average of 36.6 million viewers on Monday.

That total puts the speech 13% above Joe Biden’s most recent State of the Union address, which reached 32.2 million viewers in 2024. Still, Trump didn’t manage to draw as large an audience as he did with any of his State of the Union addresses during his first term as president. His 2017 address reached 47.7 million viewers, followed by 45.6 million in 2018, 46.8 in 2019 and 37.2 million in 2020.

Measured by Nielsen, this year’s total accounts for viewers across ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, Merit Street, Telemundo, Univision, PBS, CNN, CNNe, Fox Business, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, NewsMax and NewsNation. Biden’s 2024 total includes all of the same networks minus Merit Street, which is unlikely to have caused a large enough discrepancy to affect which telecast drew more viewers. “No Other Land” is the most acclaimed film of 2024 without U.S. distribution, be it because of apprehension over embracing a story about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict or because of general concern for the documentary market theatrically.

And yet, even without a proper distributor backing it, the film has grossed just shy of $420,000 at the domestic box office. What’s more impressive — or perhaps more sad, considering the state of documentary film — is that the film is now the highest-grossing feature among the five doc features nominated at the Oscars this year.

According to data from Comscore, “Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat” (Kino Lorber) is the next highest with $320,530 cumulative as of February 25. “Porcelain War” (Picturehouse Films) came in at No. 3 with $215,826 cumulative, and No. 4 “Sugarcane” (Variance Films) has $112,251 cumulative. “Black Box Diaries” (MTV Documentary Films) had no reported numbers via Comscore but had a release on October 25, and Box Office...

You know Netflix is popular, and you know several different series, especially original series, have an immense global appeal. In the second half of 2024 alone, 20 series had at least 25 million views each. 77 movies had at least 25 million views, based on the results Netflix released this week.

But one series stands out above all others. That would be Squid Game Season 2. It led all series in views (and also amassed 619.9 million viewing hours). The magic is that the second season was not released until December 26, which means, of course, that Squid Game got all those views in six days. Clearly, people were ready for the release.

The show coming in second might be a bit more surprising. The first season of The Perfect Couple, starring Nicole Kidman, finished in second place. Sure, we knew it was popular, but that popular? Now we know.

The latest win for the documentary, made by a Palestinian/Israeli collective that includes directors and activists Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, Rachel Szor, and Basel Adra: a trio of awards at this year’s Cinema Eye Honors.

At the 18th annual Cinema Eye Honors, which took place Thursday, January 9 at the New York Academy of Medicine in East Harlem, the film walked away with three awards, including Cinema Eye’s top prize, Outstanding Nonfiction Filmmaking. Directors Yuval Abraham, Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, and Rachel Szor also received the award for Debut Feature, with Abraham and Adra also Honored as Unforgettables for their appearance on screen in the film.

“No Other Land” has been named named the best feature of 2024 at the Cinema Eye Honors, the New York-based documentary awards that were established to celebrate all aspects of nonfiction filmmaking. The show took place on Friday night at the New York Academy of Medicine in East Harlem in New York City.

The film was made by two Israeli and two Palestinian filmmakers over the last five years during the conflict in Gaza. It also won the best-feature award at the IDA Documentary Awards, the other major award devoted to nonfiction films.

Hudson Meek, best known for his role in the acclaimed movie Baby Driver, has passed away. He was only 16 years old.

The news of Meek's death was announced on his Instagram account. Including an image of Meek, the post stated, "Our hearts are broken to share that Hudson Meek went home to be with Jesus tonight. His 16 years on this earth were far too short, but he accomplished so much and significantly impacted everyone he met. Specific details regarding a Celebration of Hudson’s Life to be held on December 28, as well as how to contribute to a scholarship in Hudson’s memory at Vestavia Hills High School in lieu of flowers, will follow. Please pray for Hudson’s family and friends as we all process this sudden and tragic loss."

Hudson Meek, a teen actor who appeared in Edgar Wright’s film “Baby Driver,” died on Dec. 22 in Alabama after falling from a moving vehicle. He was 16.

“Our hearts are broken to share that Hudson Meek went home to be with Jesus tonight,” read a post on his Instagram account. “His 16 years on this earth were far too short, but he accomplished so much and significantly impacted everyone he met.”

The accident occurred Thursday night in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, according to local news site Al.com. Meek “sustained blunt force injuries after falling to the road from a moving vehicle,” Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates told Al.com. Meek was taken to a hospital and died Saturday night. Vestavia Hills police are investigating his death.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced shortlists in 10 categories for the 97th Academy Awards®: Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound and Visual Effects.

Fifteen films will advance in the Documentary Feature Film category for the 97th Academy Awards. One hundred sixty-nine films were eligible in the category. Members of the Documentary Branch vote to determine the shortlist and the nominees.

Am I Racist?, the controversial documentary that satirizes Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives, failed to make the Oscar shortlist of nonfiction features today, despite earning more money at the box office than any other documentary this year, by far.

The film directed by Justin Folk features conservative author and podcaster Matt Walsh going undercover to infiltrate Dei seminars, dinners and the like. It scooped up more than $12 million at the domestic box office, but that wasn’t enough to sway the minds of Academy Documentary Branch members, who determine the shortlist (as well as the eventual five Oscar nominees).

Will & Harper, the Netflix documentary about comedic actor Will Ferrell and his friendship with SNL pal Harper Steele who came out as trans, earned a spot on the coveted Oscar documentary feature shortlist today.

It wasn’t the only shortlist honor for the film directed by Josh Greenbaum. The tune from the closing credits – “Will and Harper Go West,” written by SNL alum Kristen Wiig and Sean Douglas and performed by Wiig – got shortlisted for Best Original Song (Douglas is the son of actor Michael Keaton).

But another high-profile documentary in the running for the shortlist didn’t make the cut: Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story, about the late actor who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident. That film, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui, recently won Best Documentary Feature at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards, and last week earned a nomination for the Producers Guild of America Award.

Oscar shortlists are like exit polls released on Election Day before balloting has ended: they’re the best information yet available about how actual voters are feeling, but they don’t necessarily tell you the whole story.

In Tuesday’s announcement of this year’s 10 shortlists — which were, as always, chosen by different branches of the Academy, not the full membership — we saw a terrific show of strength from Netflix’s Emilia Pérez, with a field-leading six mentions; and very solid showings from Universal’s Wicked, with four; and Fox’s Alien: Romulus, Apple’s Blitz, Warners’ Dune: Part Two, Paramount’s Gladiator II and Universal’s The Wild Robot, with three each.

But the fact that, say, Neon’s Anora, Searchlight’s A Real Pain and Amazon/MGM’s Nickel Boys showed up on none of the shortlists is actually not an indication that they are failing to resonate with the Academy.

It’s almost that magical time of the year when the Academy announces the final list of nominees for the 97th Academy Awards! The Oscars represent what many consider the biggest night in Hollywood, as celebrities and filmmakers dress to the nines and walk a red carpet on their way to recognizing some of the best the industry offers. Before the Academy unveils the final list of nominees on January 17, shortlists for 10 Oscar categories have arrived!

The 10 shortlists include considerations for the following categories: documentary feature film, documentary short film, international feature film, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score), music (original song), animated short film, live-action short film, sound and visual effects.

Voting for the 97th Oscars begins at 9 a.m. Pt on January 8 and lasts until 5 p.m. Pt on January 12. The final list of nominees posts on January 17, with final voting at 9 a.m. Pt on February 11 and ending at 5 p.

If there is one fickle and often head-scratching branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, it’s the Documentary one. Over the years, the branch has angered many of its peers by snubbing acclaimed works and uplifting what some consider pedestrian docs. This year appears to be on solid ground as the Documentary Film Oscar shortlist contains critically lauded films such as “No Other Land,” “Daughters,” “Porcelain War,” and “Union.”

“Sugarcane,” “No Other Land,” “Will & Harper,” “Dahomey” and “The Remarkable Life of Ibelin” are among the 15 films that made the shortlist in the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category, one of 10 shortlists that the Academy announced on Tuesday.

The doc shortlist includes many of the most acclaimed nonfiction films of 2024, including Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie’s “Sugarcane,” which led all nominees at the IDA Documentary Awards, the Cinema Eye Honors and Critics Choice Documentary Awards; Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Rachel Szor and Yuval Abraham’s “No Other Land,” which went on to win at the IDA doc awards; and Mati Diop’s “Dahomey,” which also landed a spot on the International Feature Film list, representing Senegal.

As always, there were snubs, including “Super/Man: The Christopher Reeve Story,” a well-reviewed look at the late actor who famously played the Man of Steel, directed by Ian Bonhôte and Peter Ettedgui.

If the Oscars shortlist is the equivalent of mid-term exams for awards contenders, then Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez” and Universal Pictures’ “Wicked” just received passing grades.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the shortlists in 10 categories for the upcoming 97th Oscars ceremony.

“Emilia Pérez” landed six mentions overall, including makeup, sound, original score, international feature, and two for original song (“El Mal” and “Mi Camino”). The musical was followed another behometh in the race, Universal Pictures’ “Wicked,” which landed four.

The preliminary voting applies to animated short film, documentary feature, documentary short, international feature, live action short, makeup and hairstyling, original score, original song, sound and visual effects.

Oscar voting to determine the nominees in all 23 categories opens on Wednesday, Jan. 8, and concludes on Sunday, Jan. 12. Nominations will be announced on Friday, Jan. 17.
