Joan Chen’s ‘The Evil Inside’ Adds Jason King, Zin Yang, Eugenie Liu (Exclusive)
Image
Jason King, Zin Yang and Eugenie Liu have joined the cast of “The Evil Inside,” the new thriller from acclaimed Taiwanese filmmaker Lingo Hsieh now in production. The trio joins international star Joan Chen, whose casting was previously announced by Variety, in the genre-bending film inspired by real-life events that shook a nation.

The project marks Chen’s first Taiwanese feature film, adding another milestone to the career of the actor known for “The Last Emperor,” “Lust, Caution” and “Didi.”

King, a veteran of Taiwanese cinema since the 1980s who earned a Golden Horse Award nomination last year for “A Journey in Spring,” will play Guang, an evangelical figure running a nursing facility with dark secrets. The character exploits terminally ill patients in an illegal gambling operation disguised as compassionate care.

“Even though this character has a lot of evil inside, I still want to show the humanity of such a dark person,...

Akio Chen, Kuan-Ting Liu, and Run-yin Bai in Lao hu li (2023)
Film Review: Old Fox (2023) by Hsiao Ya-chuan
Akio Chen, Kuan-Ting Liu, and Run-yin Bai in Lao hu li (2023)
Social inequality might be considered “a tale as old as time”. No matter the century or year, its intricacies intrigue the creative industry, from literature to cinema. After all, equality still represents an unattainable goal. But to face such a topic, one should also be able to question their own sense of morality. And ‘Old Fox‘ by Hsiao Ya-chuan, winner of four Golden Horse Awards, is an evocative journey that challenges us to question our present by looking at the past.

Old Fox is screening at Asian Pop Up Cinema

Set in the late 80s, the film tells the story of 11-year-old Liao Jie (Bai Run-yin) and his father Liao Tai-lai (Kuan Ting-Liu). Father and son live in poverty, as Tai-lai is only a waiter and the sole provider. While skimping on clothes, gas, and everything else needed, the father hopes to save enough money to fulfill his late wife...

Director Hsaio Ya-Chuan On Taiwan’s Oscar Entry ‘Old Fox’: “With This Movie I Can Plant Some Seeds” – Contenders International
Image
How to teach your kids right from wrong without laying the groundwork for them to become a complete pushover in later life? That’s the conundrum explored in Hsaio Ya-chuan’s Old Fox, the Taiwanese submission for the Best International Feature Oscar.

Set in 1990, at the height of Taiwan’s economic bubble, it concerns an 11-year-old boy named Liao Jie (Bai Run-yin), who lives with his widowed father Liao Tai-Lai (Liu Kuan-Ting). Liao Tai-Lai is a gifted musician who dreams of opening his own barber shop but cannot afford it. By chance, Liao Jie comes to befriend his neighborhood’s notorious landlord, Mr. Xie (Akio Chen), and the difference between the two men — one kind but poor, the other ruthless but rich — forces the youngster to wonder which might be the most effective role model.

“The inspiration actually came from the questions that my kids asked me when they were...

‘Old Fox’ Review: A Mostly Compelling Taiwanese Melodrama Offers an Important Lesson About Values
Image
Set in Taipei, against the backdrop of the economic bubble of 1989, the Taiwanese international feature Oscar submission “Old Fox” is a relatively engaging popular melodrama about altruism vs. self-interest and inequality of all sorts. In his fourth feature, director Hsiao Ya-Chuan follows the unsentimental education of a motherless 11-year-old boy, Liao Jie (Bai Run-yin), raised in poverty by his kindly father, Liao Tai-lai (Liu Kuan-Ting), a waiter at a busy banqueting hall. One rainy day, the bullied lad comes to the attention of his landlord, the wealthy Boss Xie (Akio Chen), nicknamed Old Fox for his cunning. Recognizing his younger self in the small boy, Old Fox tries to teach Jie how he rose to wealth and power.

The screenplay by the director and co-writer Chan I-wen, is inspired by helmer Hsiao’s attempts to explain fairness and justice to his own children. They create a gripping moral quandary for their young protagonist,...

Taipei Takeaways: Collaboration, Coproduction and Cultural Diversity Shape the Taiwan Creative Content Fest
Image
As the Taiwan Creative Content Fest (Tccf) concludes its fifth edition, the event has reaffirmed its role as a significant platform for the creative industry on the island – and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.

With a focus on collaboration and cultural representation, Tccf 2024 brought to light three key trends that reflect Taiwan’s evolving position in the global entertainment landscape.

International Collaboration Takes Center Stage

A prominent theme at this year’s Tccf was the increasing focus on international co-productions. Industry leaders gathered to discuss the practicalities and advantages of cross-border partnerships, both locally within southeast Asia and much farther afield. For example, Oscar-winning production company Fabula (“A Fantastic Woman”), the Chilean production house founded by Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín and Venice Critics’ Week Grand Prize winner Tana Gilbert (“Malqueridas”), is developing “Where Is Narumi?“, a documentary series examining the 2016 killing of Japanese student Kurosaki Narumi by her ex-partner Nicolás Zepeda.

Akio Chen, Kuan-Ting Liu, and Run-yin Bai in Lao hu li (2023)
The best commercial cinema from Asia at Five Flavours – announcing the first titles of the Asian Cinerama section!
Akio Chen, Kuan-Ting Liu, and Run-yin Bai in Lao hu li (2023)
One of the most energetic action films of the past year, set in the Walled City – the now-demolished, infamous district of Hong Kong; a tale of a spiritual journey through Nepal, filmed in the austere landscapes of the Himalayas, that has captivated festivals worldwide; and a clever, nostalgic crowd-pleaser from Taiwan! The Cinerama films will charm audiences and offer a refreshing break from arthouse cinema.

At the 18th Five Flavours, as always, there will be no shortage of eye-catching titles, whether they come from the hands of master filmmakers or serve as a ticket to fame for emerging directors. Films representing the commercial side of Asian cinema—currently in its golden age—are rarely shown in Poland. This is a great loss, as they astonish with their power and innovation. It’s safe to say that today the heart of entertainment cinema is in Asia. The Asian Cinerama screenings are,...

New Gen Drives Biz as Taiwan Sees Rise of Younger Filmmakers With Global Ambition: ‘Everything Is Possible in Taiwan’
Image
The feature “Tales of Taipei” is a tribute to the low-pressure, culturally rich city, which has been shaped by its regional neighbors, taken in diverse peoples and distilled the multiple competing influences into a messy, happy-go-lucky morass.

Produced by Bowie Tsang and Amy Ma, the film calls on 10 directors hailing from Malaysia, France, Bhutan and Hong Kong, and Taiwanese locals Yin Cheng-han and Remii Huang to contribute.

“Everything is possible in Taiwan, everything exits side by side,” says Tsang, who was born in Hong Kong. “We have old Chinese myths. We believe in the afterlife. Churches exist side by side with temples. We are still trying to figure out how to tell our stories.”

As in the film, juxtapositions exist throughout the Taiwan film industry. Theatrical B.O. improved last year, but from a low 2022 base. Last year, Taiwan productions increased market share from 10% to nearly 16%, helping to lift the...

Interview With Hsiao Ya-chuan: I Wanted People to Realize That Social Inequality Still Exists
Image
With a mix of nostalgia and modernity, “Old Fox” by Hsiao Ya-chuan brings to light the difficulty of portraying social inequality. By doing that, the film works as a bridge between the past and present, showing how some social issues are still alive and relevant to a contemporary audience. This bridge works thanks to the three distinctive characters of three different generations, which resembles this relationship between Taiwan in the 80s and Taiwan now.

Hsiao Ya-chuan's career has always used history to tell stories still relevant today, especially with family relations as the narrative focus. We got the chance to speak to the director at Udine's Far East Film Festival about his inspirations and the motifs behind his most recent heart-warming story.

How did the film's style come to be? “Old Fox” presents some nostalgic elements, like those of 80s movies. For example, when the father plays the saxophone in the background.

Film Review: Old Fox (2023) by Hsiao Ya-chuan

Social inequality might be considered “a tale as old as time”. No matter the century or year, its intricacies intrigue the creative industry, from literature to cinema. After all, equality still represents an unattainable goal. But to face such a topic, one should also be able to question their own sense of morality. And ‘Old Fox' by Hsiao Ya-chuan, winner of four Golden Horse Awards, is an evocative journey that challenges us to question our present by looking at the past.

Image
Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we’re talking to Reno Studios, a digital studio launched in Taipei in 2017, initially handling VFX for Taiwanese films, and now also bringing work from international clients including Netflix, EuropaCorp, Saudi-owned Mbc Group and India’s Zee to Taiwan. Deadline sat down with co-founders Peter Huang and Tomi Kuo, and Executive Producer/Senior VFX Supervisor Christopher Chen, to talk about how the company has grown, their future plans, and why Taiwan is an ideal destination for VFX and Virtual Production.

Despite being known internationally for its semiconductor and computer hardware industries, Taiwan is not the first destination that springs to mind in the Asia Pacific when it comes to VFX and digital production. Australia and New Zealand have traditionally...

Ang Lee congratulates the Best Actor winner at the Golden Horse Awards. Image via Golden Horse instagram.

While Stonewalling, a drama about a pregnant flight attendant had the least amount of nominations of the "Best Narrative Feature" contenders (just 3), it emerged with the big win this past weekend in Taipei. (You can stream the film on Criterion Channel in the US). Curiously the big winner in terms of number of prizes was Old Fox, which wasn't nominated for Best Feature though it took Best Director and three other prizes. Another curiousity: none of the acting winners were from Best Feature nominees. The winners and a few of their trailers are after the jump...

China-set drama Stonewalling, co-directed by husband-and-wife team Ryuji Otsuka and Huang Ji, won best narrative feature at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards, which is celebrating its 60th edition this year.

The film, which premiered in Venice and won best film at Hong Kong film festival’s Young Cinema Competition, follows a young woman in mainland China grappling with issues around career, relationships, health and fertility. It also won best editing, which was shared by Otsuka and Taiwan’s Liao Ching-sung, with the latter winning his first Golden Horse award after 12 nominations stretching back four decades.

The awards were evenly spread among the nominated films. Taiwan’s Wu Kang-ren won best leading actor for his role as a deaf-mute in Malaysian drama Abang Adik. Best actress went to 12-year-old Audrey Lin for her role in Trouble Girl, making her the youngest ever best actress winner at the Golden Horse awards.
