Final instalment in the Romero "Living Dead" franchise.
After the moderate reception to Le cronache dei morti viventi (2007) and Survival of the Dead - L'isola dei sopravvissuti (2009), George A. Romero sought to return to the original Living Dead series time-line of La notte dei morti viventi (1968), Zombi (1978), Il giorno degli zombi (1985), and La terra dei morti viventi (2005) with Twilight of the Dead, envisioning it as the capstone to the series. Romero had been collaborating with writer Paolo Zelati on a treatment about the world's last human survivors stuck on an island in a zombie-ravaged Earth, but he passed away in 2017. In 2021, Romero's estate, led by his widow Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, revived the project with Zelati and new writers, in order to honor his legacy and complete his vision.
