Ron Howard revealed in a career-spanning Vulture interview that he was ready to walk away from “Happy Days” if the team behind the beloved ABC sitcom changed its title to “Fonzie’s Happy Days.” Howard led the series as Richie Cunningham, with Henry Winkler as Richie’s fan favorite best friend Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli (also called The Fonz). Winkler was the show’s breakout, which had the team behind “Happy Days” considering a title change.
“I never, ever challenged what they were doing creatively. It made perfect sense that you’d build this Fonzie character and maximize that,” Howard said.

And just like that, another era of Carrie Bradshaw ends. Sex and the City fans have followed Bradshaw for over two decades, through countless cosmopolitans and unaffordable Manolo Blahniks. The iconic character, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, made New York City her playground — alongside her best friends Charlotte (Kristin Davis), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Samantha (Kim Cattrall). The crew lived, laughed, and loved their way through the city that never sleeps.
The show made its mark on pop culture with its fabulous fashions, its nuanced depiction of fiercely loyal friendships, and its frank, groundbreaking look at sex and dating from a woman’s perspective. Carrie and the gang made their way through the New York dating scene — canoodling with modelizers, younger men, and everyone in between — but over the six seasons of the series, it’s Carrie’s many entanglements that most reliably sent us reeling. Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs and movies about the moment they realized their project was breaking big.
Four films, four books, and three decades since her creation, and the marvelous Ms. Bridget Jones still endures. Initially created by author Helen Fielding as newspaper column fodder — clever enough to poke fun at a cultural obsession with “women’s issues,” charming enough to truly make us care about her — the utterly indefatigable rom-com queen has done it all. This year, that includes something brand-new: get nominated for an Emmy.
While “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy” was released theatrically around the globe, in the United States, the much-anticipated fourth film in the long-running franchise was only available to stream on Peacock. That wasn’t an entirely popular choice, particularly for Bridget fans who wanted...

“The Gilded Age” has reached a new viewership high every week for five weeks in a row now, with Sunday’s Season 3 finale clearing 5 million viewers after three days.
That total comes from a combination of Nielsen’s tally of linear viewers on HBO’s cable channel plus streams on HBO Max, which are measured by Warner Bros. Discovery itself. When accounting for the first three days of availability of all eight episodes of Season 3, the finale achieved an 88% increase from the premiere, which hit a total of 2.7 million viewers back in June.

“Abbot lands and he’s only in Season 1 for four hours out of the 15, but you come away from it sort of seeing him as a regular,” Shawn Hatosy says. That’s certainly true. He’s left his mark on The Pitt enough that he’s become a fan-favorite and it’s landed him his first Emmy nomination, for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series. And so TV Insider had him rewatch the finale rooftop scene, in which Abbot talks Robby (Noah Wyle) down — from closer to the ledge than the vet had been himself in the premiere — for our latest Scene Study. You can watch that full video above. As he recalls, that scene in the finale was the third he filmed for the show; it was filmed months ahead of the rest of the episode, so he, Wyle, director John Wells, and writer R. Scott Gemmill didn...

Peacock’s Twisted Metal Season 2 finally sees Calypso’s tournament in high gear as the competitors fully show off their wares to both one another and the audience, particularly in Episode 5, “Onurmrk,” when each challenger gets to showboat for the others, showing off themselves and their cars, each equally impressive. It is here that the audience meets each racer in the Twisted Metal tournament, some of whom had previously only existed in the annals of the game, including Mr. Grimm (Richard de Klerk) and Vermin (Lisa Gilroy). It is also here that a new development emerges for the new Odd Couple: Stu (Mike Mitchell) and Sweet Tooth (body performance by Joe Seanoa and voice performance by Will Arnett). The two form an unlikely bond after Stu realizes he isn’t evil enough to survive in the apocalyptic world and decides to make Sweet Tooth his mentor. The sadistic clown revels in having a student,...

There’s the old saw about good screenwriting — that it always ought to be surprising, but inevitable. The filmmaking team behind Netflix’s four-part miniseries “Adolescence” has more than taken that to heart. The show is not just the story of the fallout after 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) murders his classmate Katie (Emilia Holliday). It resists a conventional whodunnit or howcatchem structure in the episodes — the arrest, a follow-up investigation, a psychological evaluation, and a day in the life afterwards for the perpetrator’s family — that writers/executive producers Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham choose to explore.
And the content dictates the show’s form. The story of “Adolescence” is told in four single, continuous takes, not to make a spectacle of the fluid camerawork but to create a visual environment from which none of the characters can find escape or relief. “The technical maneuvers and interesting technical feats...

It’s just the way life goes: When you don’t want snow on your shoot, you’re gonna get it. And when you want it, you won’t get it.
That’s exactly what happened for “1923” co-production designers Cary White and Lisa Ward for the Taylor Sheridan show. On Season 1, they were nearly driven out of Montana by the snowfall near the end of production — and they were not trying to put any hint of winter weather onscreen. Season 2 was supposed to have all of its Montana-set scenes in the most frigid, snowy, brutal winter, and… well, you probably see where this is going.
“We prayed for snow,” said White, who, along with Ward, supervising art director Sean Ryan Jennings, and set decorator Carla Curry, received a 2025 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Production Design for a Narrative Period or Fantasy Program. “And we got it, but on the last day of shooting.

Jeopardy! is currently on summer hiatus, but fans are already talking about what they’d like to see when the show returns with new episodes this fall. On the Reddit fan thread, one poster suggested the return of a long-forgotten tradition of Jeopardy!: episodes on location. “Will Jeopardy! ever travel to other U.S. states again to tape episodes for certain tournaments?” the fan asked in a thread. “They used to do this for some tournaments like the College & Teen championship many years ago.” “I think the last time Jeopardy! was taping shows somewhere outside of their main studio was in 2016 for the Teacher’s Tournament,” the fan continued. “Ever since then, they haven’t gone anywhere else. Do you think we’ll see episodes taped outside of California?” In response to the original poster’s comment, other fans weighed in with their takes on taking Jeopardy! back on the road.

Following the recent slew of HGTV show cancellations, one series is coming back just in time for Halloween. Retta will visit more of the wackiest and spookiest houses across the U.S. in Season 2 of Scariest House in America. The six-episode season, which premieres next month, will see the actress “tour 15 more petrifyingly paranormal or horrifically hideous houses whose owners say are haunted by scary stories and hair-raising sights,” per the network on Thursday, August 14. “This season, the frightening finds will include a former funeral home with a basement morgue, a house situated on a graveyard and a property that resembles a witch’s hat — all where spooky shadows lurk, lights flicker and strange noises abound,” the season’s description reads. Each episode will feature “unfiltered views” from Retta about each of the homes’ “scary appearance, un-livability and fright factor.” Whichever house is deemed the “scariest” in the one-house season...

Buckle up — the Extraction universe just got a new player, and he’s bringing plenty of heat.
Boyd Holbrook is suiting up alongside previously announced Omar Sy in the next chapter of the action juggernaut — a heart-racing eight-episode installment set in the same world as the hit films.
The high-octane Extraction films — based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo — depict perilous search-and-rescue missions around the globe. The new action thriller series follows a mercenary (played by Sy), who’s trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers as he navigates a dangerous mission to save hostages in Libya. The series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices. As for Holbrook, his character is still under wraps. California’s efforts to jumpstart the entertainment economy are showing early signs of success, as the California Film Commission saw a 400% spike in applications for tax credits in July.
The state expanded its film and TV incentive from $330 million annually to $750 million in June in hopes of counteracting an industrywide downturn. The commission opened a new “application window” for TV series on July 7-9, the first under new regulations that make the credit more attractive to productions.
“It’s clear the recent expansion and program enhancements are drawing strong attention from across the industry,” said a spokesperson for the commission.

Miles Heizer is heading to the front lines in Boots, which comes to Netflix Oct. 9. Boots is a one-hour comedic drama that delivers an irreverent, offbeat take on the coming-of-age story.
