On the 11th June 2018 UK-based Polish national Lukasz Herba was convicted of the kidnapping of Chloe Ayling by an Italian court. In his closing statement to the court, Herba said that he had been inspired to kidnap Ayling after watching the film "By Any Means". Ironically, the parallels between the plot of the film and Ayling's kidnapping was one of the reasons some social media users doubted her story.
Chloe is shown to be scratching her hands when anxious. She is also shown suffering sensory overload when out alone in Italy for the first time after the ordeal. The actress accurately represented her 'dull' monotone speaking voice, and together with her pragmatism and stubbornness, aligns with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) - a diagnosis which was confirmed in March 2025 - after production of this series.
