Some of the pipe shots were taken in the plumbing system of Castle Leopoldskron in Salzburg, the filming location of "The Sound of Music."
In 2008, the director approached his grandfather, Otto Zucker, seeking permission to incorporate his images into future art projects and films. Zucker's response was clear: "Wennst mi in a Film gibst, dann wü i a richtiger Bösewicht sein." ("If you put me in a movie, make me a real villain.") This idea stayed with the director for years, even after Zucker's passing. The director expressed hope that it would have made his grandfather proud.
Though not directly linked in plot, Grenzfurthner described "Solvent" as the spiritual successor to "Masking Threshold" (2021) and "Razzennest" (2022), forming a trilogy united by a shared spirit. He refers to these films as "kindred works, forbidden siblings."
In interviews (e.g. Without A Head podcast), director Johannes Grenzfurthner explained a controversial scene in which the character Bartholdi recalls his Nazi grandfather appearing to express sympathy for Palestinians, only to end with the chilling line: "If we only had six more months." Grenzfurthner based the quote on something he personally overheard from a neo-Nazi recruiter at a COVID protest in Vienna. The scene deliberately exposes how far-right extremists hijack real grievances to push antisemitic ideologies. As Grenzfurthner puts it: "Of course Nazis hate Israel. That doesn't make them pro-Palestinian, it just makes them antisemitic."
Solvent's carbon footprint is only 2.23 tons CO2e.
