Oscars: Sweden Submits Hit Doc ‘The Last Journey’ For Best International Feature Film
Image
Sweden has selected The Last Journey as its candidate for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

The documentary by popular Swedish TV hosts and journalists Filip Hammar and Fredrik Wikingsson, known at home as Filip och Fredrik, sees the duo take Hammar’s father Lars on a road trip to France.

Lars has recently retired after 40 years as a French teacher but instead of a “third age” of travel, wine and experiences with his wife, he becomes passive and tired. By making the same road trip that the family used to make when Filip was a child, and staging some of life’s most beautiful moments, they hope to rekindle Lars’ spark.

The doc is produced by Nexiko in co-production with Nordisk Film Distribution, Rmv Film and collaboration with Svt.

The work has proven a hit at the Swedish box office this year, drawing more...

Oscars International Race Gets a Clear Frontrunner as France Submits ‘Emilia Perez’
Image
France has selected Jacques Audiard’s bold musical “Emilia Perez” to represent the country in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film race, giving that category an instant frontrunner at the 97th Academy Awards.

The Netflix film, which caused a sensation at the Cannes Film Festival with its story of a Mexican drug lord undergoing sex reassignment surgery, is considered one of the year’s likeliest Best Picture nominees, making it a clear favorite in the international category as well.

It was chosen on Wednesday by a selection committee that had narrowed its choices to four: “Emilia Perez,” Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light,” Matthieu Delaporte’s “The Count of Monte Cristo” and Alain Guiraudie’s “Misericordia.”

Last year, that committee chose “The Taste of Things” over “Anatomy of a Fall,” going with a ravishing romance over an edgier drama that had won the top prize in Cannes. “The Taste of Things...

Oscars 2025: Finland Picks ‘Family Time’ for International Feature Race
Image
Finland has picked the dramedy Family Time to represent the country for the 2025 Oscars in the best international feature category.

Family Time premiered in Berlinale’s Encounters section last year and bowed in Finland last November. It went on to sweep Finland’s Academy Awards, the Jussis, taking best film, best director and best screenplay. The Match Factory is handling international sales.

Dornaz Hajiha’s ‘Like a Fish on the Moon’ Wins Transilvania Film Festival
Image
Like a Fish on the Moon, the feature debut of Iranian writer-director Dornaz Hajiha, has won the Transilvania Trophy for best feature film at this year’s festival, marking the first time in the event’s 22-year history that Transilvania International Film Festival’s top award went to a female director.

The film follows new parents who are forced to adapt when their apparently healthy son suddenly stops talking.

“The film we have chosen impressed us for the originality of its premise, the power of its performances and the intelligence with which it explored very difficult subject matter,” Mexican filmmaker Michel Franco, the jury president, said in a statement. “The director demonstrated great attention to detail and an impressive, singular vision. We were also impressed by the script, which captured the often conflicting pressures of parenthood, the brutality of devotion. It is a film that resonated long after it ended.

Transilvania Film Festival Bounces Back After ‘Tough Years’ of Pandemic, Sees Attendance Soar
Image
When push comes to shove, the Transilvania Intl. Film Festival has always prided itself on pushing the envelope, preferring to err on the side of provocation where other fests might choose to play it safe. That mentality has been encoded into the fest’s DNA since its beginnings in the tumultuous post-Communist era, when civil liberties and artistic freedom were still far from guaranteed in the newly democratic Romania.

Yet after a turbulent period of unprecedented disruption, brought on first by the coronavirus pandemic and then by the widespread humanitarian and economic crises spurred by Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine, even TIFF founder Tudor Giurgiu admits, “These were tough years.” The temptation might have been there to tinker with a formula that has made the festival such a success for the past two decades.

But for its 22nd edition, which runs June 9 – 18 in the picturesque medieval city of Cluj,...

‘Compartment No. 6’ Production Company Aamu Film Company Joins Forces With Jenni Jauri’s Silmu Films (Exclusive)
Image
Finland’s Aamu Film Company will invest in Jenni Jauri’s new production company Silmu Films, Variety has found out exclusively.

Aamu, founded in 2001 and co-owned by Jussi Rantamäki and Emilia Haukka, has become a local arthouse powerhouse thanks to its festival-friendly slate, especially Juho Kuosmanen’s “The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki” and Golden Globe-nominated “Compartment No. 6,” awarded the Grand Prix in Cannes.

“We had a good film with decent sales and we started to think about what we should do next,” Rantamäki said. “Aamu’s brand is simple and clear: we only work with a select few directors. We don’t want to change that; we don’t want to turn into a factory where you don’t know what is happening and with whom. So first we decided not to grow, and then realized we could invest in a new company instead.”

Apart from Kuosmanen,...

Why Ziggy Marley Made a Children’s Album During Quarantine
Image
In the early days of the pandemic, Ziggy Marley found himself stuck at home in California, wondering how to address the pain of the current moment with his music. Since he was also occupied with family, that desire to write led to More Family Time, the new follow-up to his 2009 kids album Family Time.

“I just kept being pulled back into a kids’ record,” Marley tells Rolling Stone. “With everything that’s going on, it just felt right, doing something for the children.”

With contagious enthusiasm, Marley and friends (including Alanis Morisette,...

Ziggy Marley’s ‘More Family Time’ Is a Feelgood Party For the Kids
Image
Ziggy Marley is a global music royal with a deep Rolodex. His latest is a children’s album that, like his 2009 release Family Time, is full of famous friends and very kind vibes and intentions. Marley says he wanted to reflect the spirit of his four-year-old son, Isaiah, and to help create the right Saturday-morning pajama jam vibe, he’s recruited his other children to appear on the album. The result is an ideal time filler for parents looking for something/anything to put on the stereo and get your...

Image
Netflix has ordered a comedy series starring Jamie Foxx titled “Dad Stop Embarrassing Me,” Variety has learned.

The multi-camera series is inspired by Foxx’s relationship with his daughter, Corinne Foxx. The series will also star David Alan Grier, Kyla-Drew, Porscha Coleman, and Jonathan Kite. Heather Hemmens and Valente Rodriguez will appear in recurring roles.

Bentley Kyle Evans serves as showrunner and executive producer. Foxx will executive produce in addition to starring, with Corinne and Alex Avant producing. Ken Whittingham will direct all episodes.
