Gears of War 3 has a very short history of competitive gaming, so the tournament is most likely a reference to the 2011 COD XP, a LAN tournament with a price pool of 1 million dollars (winner taking 400.000 dollars), which was played out in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
