Max Thieriot and Jennifer Lawrence in Hates - House at the End of the Street (2012)

Hates - House at the End of the Street

Takashi Shimizu
This Terrifying J-Horror Remake Is Now Streaming For Free!
Takashi Shimizu
The early aughts launched a wave of horror remakes, but they’re especially known as an era full of American remakes of Japanese horror classics. One such adaptation is Takashi Shimizu‘s 2004 film, The Grudge, based on the Japanese film Ju-On: The Grudge, which Shimizu directed in 2002. It’s not often the original director is brought on for the American adaptation, so this is a fascinating film even for just that reason.

In the film, “An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim.“

The Grudge stars horror icon Sarah Michelle Gellar, as well as Jason Behr (Roswell) and Clea DuVall (The Faculty). It was a massive hit upon release, raking in a reported $187.3 million on a $10 million budget. It was released when I was a kid,...

When Jennifer Lawrence Poked Fun At Her Own Flop Horror Movie: “She Appeared Embarrassed About…”
Image
Which Flop Horror Movie Was Jennifer Lawrence A Part Of? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Jennifer Lawrence might’ve ruled red carpets and awards seasons, but even Oscar winners have those “let’s pretend that didn’t happen” moments. For Lawrence, that moment came wrapped in horror, clichés, and a house with a tragic backstory. Yep, House at the End of the Street had her cringing, and she didn’t even try to hide it.

While collecting praise for American Hustle in 2013, Lawrence tossed in a self-deprecating jab that left fans laughing and critics nodding. In an open letter to the New York Film Critics Circle (via CheatSheet), she joked, “The critics have been very kind to me thus far in my career. But I guess I’m not receiving this for House at the End of the Street, so you guys must have missed that one, right?” And just like that,...

Fire Country Star Max Thieriot's Forgotten 12-Year-Old Horror Film Gets New Streaming Home
Image
Max Thieriot's forgotten horror film that saw him starring alongside Jennifer Lawrence will soon have a new streaming home. House at the End of the Street will be available on Max starting Jan. 1, 2025.

The 2012 psychological thriller film starred Jennifer Lawrence as Elissa, a young girl who moves with her newly divorced mother to a new neighborhood where the house at the end of the street was the location of a double homicide. Elissa soon meets up with the murderer's older brother, Ryan (played by Thieriot) and finds herself learning more about the mysterious events that unfolded at the house.

Jennifer Lawrence’s 10% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Feature Will Creep Its Way Onto Streaming Next Month
Image
After nabbing an Academy Award nomination in 2011 for her work in Winter’s Bone and following that up with a performance in Silver Linings Playbook that would ultimately lead to an Oscar win, Jennifer Lawrence said, ‘let’s do something different and absolutely out of the normal.’ And with that, the actress dipped into horror. But not just any spooky movie, unfortunately, the actress chose one that would end up being a major flop — Mark Tonderai’s 2012 feature, House at the End of the Street. Still, for those who love suspense, a keep-you-guessing vibe, and buy into the “so bad it’s good” subgenre of horror, House at the End of the Street should make it onto your Max queue when the title drops on the platform on January 1.

Every Jennifer Lawrence Movie Ranked From Worst to Best
Image
From her breakout dramatic role in Winter’s Bone to her raunchy comedic turn in No Hard Feelings, Jennifer Lawrence has shown off her full acting range in a wide variety of great movies. Lawrence is one of the world’s highest-paid actors and one of the world’s highest-grossing actors, and she’s appeared on both Time and Forbes’ lists of the world’s most influential celebrities. She’s won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Film Award, and three Golden Globes. Throughout her career, Lawrence has played such iconic roles as Katniss Everdeen, Tiffany Maxwell, and Joy Mangano.

Lawrence is one of the last remaining movie stars in the franchise age. At a time when superheroes and other IPs are the stars of the silver screen, Lawrence is a bona fide A-lister who can draw audiences to a movie based on her involvement alone. She has appeared in a few franchises,...

‘No Hard Feelings’ Lets Jennifer Lawrence Get Raunchy
Image
Jennifer Lawrence is hilarious. Sure, she made her name as an actor in dead-serious indie dramas (The Burning Plain, Winter’s Bone), franchise tent poles (The Hunger Games trilogy, those X-Men 2.0 blockbusters), the kind of nerve-shredding films that fall somewhere between horror and thriller (House at the End of the Street, Passengers), and whatever category you care to slot Mother! into. Filmmaker David O. Russell figured out early on that Lawrence was a perfect fit for his skewed, neurotic dramedies, and it’s impossible to think that Silver Linings Playbook and...

10 Best Killer-Next-Door Movies Ranked
Image
There's nothing more frightening than the prospect of a murder happening right in the backyard, and Hollywood has capitalized off of this horrifying prospect with some of the best killer-next-door movies. Hollywood has always been obsessed with bad neighbors, as there's little scarier than realizing evil's made its home in the supposed safety of the suburbs. Killer neighbors make great antagonists to a movie's protagonist because whatever bad behavior they're up to always provides the main characters with a problem they're unable to get away from due to their proximity. Not only that, but the idea that a serial killer could be so close is a terrifying possibility, leading to some of the best serial killer horror movies.

There have been many movies made about annoying neighbors but the worst, of course, is when happy homeowners find themselves living next to a killer, which is the last thing anyone wants...

Team Downey President Says It’s Important to Nurture Early-Career Connections: ‘Build Your People’
Robert Downey Jr. at an event for The Judge (2014)
Before joining actor Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey to help oversee their production company, known for projects like “Perry Mason” and the “Sherlock Holmes” film franchise, Amanda Burrell rose through the ranks in independent film.

A key lesson she learned early in her career: “Build your people.”

“The people you meet when you’re young and you feel so adrift are going to be in your life forever,” she told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “I’ve reconnected with people and talked to people, and it’s crazy how we’ve grown up together.”

One example is Beatrice Springborn, now president of Universal Content Productions and International Studios, whom she met during her indie film days.

“When we were in the early days of pitching ‘Sweet Tooth’ to the market, she was at Hulu running drama,” Burrell recalled. “We have such a deep...

Henry Winkler at an event for Cambia la tua vita con un click (2006)
The jokes will extend well past April 1st on HBO and HBO Max.

“Barry” returns for its fourth and final season. After the shocking Season 3 finale which saw Barry (Billy Hader) getting arrested and Cousineau (Henry Winkler) being hailed as a hero, there will be plenty of consequences for both. The dark comedy premieres on April 16 with two episodes.

In the final season of HBO Max’s “Barry,” premiering on April 16, Barry’s arrest for the murder of Cousineau’s girlfriend leads to a shocking conclusion. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. HBO Max New Releases: March 2023
Image
There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.

The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).

HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Causeway Trailer: Jennifer Lawrence Is On The Road To Recovery With Help From Brian Tyree Henry
Image
For her latest return to the big screen, Jennifer Lawrence is getting back to her indie roots.

There was a time in the mid 2010s when Lawrence seemed to average around three movies per year, and alternating between blockbuster franchises ("The Hunger Games" or "The X-Men") and star-studded dramas (like "Silver Linings Playbook" or "American Hustle"). But after her Hollywood hiatus, Lawrence is looking for a change of pace. In her recent New York Times profile, the Oscar-winner revealed that she spent years being steered away from smaller material. In beginning this next chapter of her career, those are the projects that interest her most. Lawrence not only stars but also serves as producer for her upcoming film "Causeway," which has been in the works for the past three years and will be available to stream starting tomorrow.

From first-time feature director Lila Neugebauer (who helmed Broadway's "The Waverly Gallery...

‘Spell’ Director Mark Tonderai on Making His Feature Film Comeback, Working With Loretta Devine & Omari Hardwick
Image
For “Spell” director Mark Tonderai, the movie serves as more than a hoodoo spirit-filled thriller — it’s his comeback story. After helming “House at the End of the Street,” the 2012 film of the same genre starring Jennifer Lawrence that raked in $44 million worldwide — opportunities to create another film of that magnitude were scarce, the director says.

“The film market changed. So, business changed and basically became about ultra-load budgets,” he tells Variety.

Being the accomplished director he is, Tonderai found work on a number of TV sets — he’s currently spending his days filming on the set of Netflix’s “Locke & Key” Season 2 (while also following Covid-19 guidelines). But because he was a Black director in the TV space, he began to feel some restrictions on where his creative abilities could take him within the realm of the small screen. Soon enough, he felt the itch to get back into studio films.

Locke & Key Director Would Love to Take on Marvel's Blade Reboot
Image
Following the recent news that the upcoming Blade reboot, which is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has been on the hunt for writers, one director has now thrown their hat into the ring to helm the project. Locke & Key director Mark Tonderai recently explained why he thinks he'd be the perfect fit for Marvel's Blade reboot and praised the first big screen iteration of the character starring Wesley Snipes.

"I'd love to do Blade. Blade, for me, is right up my street in terms of my sensibilities. I also think Stephen Norrington did a brilliant job with the first incarnation of it, and I'd argue that it was the first, other than Tim Burton's Batman, superhero film that really revolutionised movies to where we are now. So, Blade, I would absolutely love to do."

Mark Tonderai does not have much big screen experience, having only helmed the...

‘Spell’ Review: A Conventional Hexing Horror in the Hills of Kentucky
Image
“Spell” adds to the significant recent growth of African American horror cinema, though really only in casting terms. Otherwise, this reasonably suspenseful if implausible tale is just another variation on the familiar formula of “city folk” making a big mistake going to the country, where every primitive peril awaits them. Here, instead of homicidal hillbillies à la “Texas Chainsaw” and “The Hills Have Eyes,” it’s an Appalachian enclave of Black hoodoo practitioners, with upwardly mobile Omari Hardwick at the “Misery”-esque mercy of witchy Loretta Devine.

Shot in South Africa, British-Zimbabwean director Mark Tonderai and veteran Hollywood scribe Kurt Wimmer’s film isn’t aiming for regional authenticity, though it might have poured on the bad-dream atmospherics a bit thicker to make up for that lack. Nonetheless, this is a decently stylish thriller with occult elements that should satisfy viewers’ genre requirements, though few will demand a second watch...

Alison Lohman in Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Omari Hardwick in Hoodoo Horror Movie 'Spell' with Loretta Devine
Alison Lohman in Drag Me to Hell (2009)
"I'm gon' fix ya, I'ma fix you good." Paramount Pictures has released an official trailer for a horror movie called Spell, from director Mark Tonderai (House at the End of the Street). In this changed world of cinema due the pandemic, all the distributors are desperate to release any content they can and hope it finds an audience - so every horror movie available this year is being released in October (most of them available on VOD right away). Spell is about a wealthy father who survives a plane crash in rural Appalachia, but soon becomes suspicious of the strange elderly couple who take him in to nurse him back to health with ancient Hoodoo remedies. Omari Hardwick stars as Marq in this, along with Loretta Devine, John Beasley, and Lorraine Burroughs. This is a chilling hoodoo twist on the typical locked-up-until-they-heal horror concept with some seriously unsettling moments with this woman.

Netflix’s Top 10 Most-Watched List Keeps Throwing Up Surprises
Image
As the continuous presence of Adam Sandler more than shows, Netflix‘s Top 10 most-watched list is far from a barometer of quality. Admittedly, the best movies to be found on the streaming service often make their way to the top of the rankings, as does their lineup of star-powered blockbusters, but in recent months the charts have been throwing up a lot more surprises than usual.

Of course, a lot of this has to do with the continued effects of the Coronavirus pandemic, with millions of people finding themselves with a whole lot more free time than they’ve been used to, so it hardly comes a surprise that viewership numbers for every major platform have gone through the roof since March. That being said, some of the titles to rise to the upper echelons of the Top 10 have come completely out of nowhere, and it presents a bizarre snapshot...

A Forgotten Jennifer Lawrence Movie’s Been Very Popular On Netflix This Week
Image
One of the unforeseen side effects of people staying at home with too much time to kill is wonderfully random streaming titles becoming inexplicably popular. The latest to become bolstered by the phenomenon is the near-forgotten Jennifer Lawrence-starring House at the End of the Street, which is currently ranked #4 on Netflix’s list of the top 10 most popular movies after being added to its library the other day.

The story sees teenager Elissa relocate with her mother to a small suburban neighborhood after her parents’ divorce, both of them only discovering after the move that their new home is on the same street as a house in which a double murder took place. Four years previously, a girl killed her parents and escaped into a nearby forest, never to be seen again, leaving behind her brother who is now a social pariah and whom Elissa befriends. The mystery about...

Netflix Added 4 New Movies And 9 New TV Shows This Weekend
Image
Netflix continues to dominate the streaming competition, with the platform recently putting out a range of intriguing trailers for upcoming projects while also seeing some surprising choices pull in huge amounts of subscribers. Furthermore, the streamer put out thirteen new titles this weekend, including an underrated Jamie Foxx thriller that’s already doing well with audiences, as well as a host of returning and new television shows. But what are the best new movies and series to enjoy on Netflix at the moment?

First up is Sleepless, the previously mentioned Jamie Foxx thriller from 2017, where his character infiltrates a gang to rescue his son. We also get some strong turns from Scoot McNairy and David Harbour in a film that doesn’t have the kindest critical reputation, but has still managed to climb to #2 in the Netflix movie charts this weekend. Also new, or at least returning, on Netflix is the Jennifer Lawrence-starring,...

Up first, Netflix is releasing the second season of its hit show, Dead to Me, a dark comedy about loss, grief, and friendship with incredible performances from veteran TV actresses Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini.

Hulu, meanwhile, is debuting the very first season of the new animated show, Solar Opposites, created by Rick and Morty masterminds Justin Roiland and Mike McMahan. If you’re a fan of Roiland’s foul-mouth, wacky brand of humor, it might be worth checking out for a weekend binge.

While much of the entertainment world is in lockdown and in danger of drying up their respective content pipelines soon, Netflix has claimed that they have more than enough finished projects and business will continue as usual. Omari Hardwick
“Power” star Omari Hardwick is in final negotiations to lead the upcoming horror-thriller “Spell,” sources tell Variety.

Hardwick’s attachment to the Paramount Players project comes just as his hit crime drama is set to finish up with its sixth and final season.

“Spell” follows a man (Hardwick) who crashes his plane while en route to rural Appalachia with his family for a funeral and awakens to find himself totally alone and without his bearings. Relieved to be discovered by a seemingly kind elderly couple, he has no way of knowing the dark machinations that lie in wait as he is pulled deeper and deeper into a sinister world.

“Hush” (2008) and “House at the End of the Street” director Mark Tonderai will helm from a script by “Point Break” (2015) and “Total Recall” (2012) scribe Kurt Wimmer. Wimmer will also produce along with Gordon Gray, Morris Chestnut and Brian Wilkins.

The Dark and the Wicked Is Coming Next from The Strangers Director Bryan Bertino
The Strangers writer-director Bryan Bertino's new nightmare The Dark & the Wicked has just snagged it's cast in the form of Marin Ireland (The Miseducation of Cameron Post), Michael Abbott Jr. (The Death of Dick Long), and Xander Berkeley (The Walking Dead). Bertino's new film follows the tale of terror centering on two siblings who are summoned back to the family farm to await the inevitability of their father's death, and what initially appears to be a timeless ritual of loss and remembrance turns out to be something very different.

While this has not been confirmed, I can only imagine that Ireland and Abbott Jr. will be playing the siblings mentioned above while Berkeley will be portraying the family patriarch at the end of his life. But again, this has not been confirmed at this time.

One of the main reasons I'm excited about today's news is the inclusion of actor Xander Berkeley.
