    Decent Smith short

    Wife's Life, A (1950)

    ** 1/2 (out of 4)

Pete Smith short has a husband (Dave O'Brien) refusing to take his wife to the movies because he feels she doesn't do anything at home. We then see everything she actually does do including waking her lazy husband up for work, bathing their young daughter, cooking and various cleaning. This short is fairly good with a couple nice laughs but the writing isn't as good as it could have been, which leaves a lot of the jokes coming off rather bland. The highlight is the sequence where the mom leaves the daughter alone in the tub and she reaches for the soap but ends up putting too much in the tub. The scenes trying to wake the husband up were rather forced but entertaining.

Dave O'Brien shines as Mr. Hardnose...

I love these Pete Smith Specialties, mainly because you can always depend on DAVE O'BRIEN to give 100% to his performance, whether it be shaving in the morning before he's completely awake or taking one of his numerous pratfalls.

This time it's the wife (DOROTHY SHORT) who gets the spotlight as the lady of the house who wants hubby to take her to the movies after dinner. She calls him up at work and he rejects the idea because he'll be too tired by evening. He exclaims, "After all, what have you done all day?" We then see a series of montages showing the little wife cleaning house, taking care of the baby girl, pushing furniture around, and literally knocking herself out on the daily chores. When hubby gets home and still refuses to budge from his favorite chair, you can guess what happens next.

    Summing up: Just plain fun.

    All My Sympathy

A Smith called Pete narrates this short comedy about the travails of being married to David O'Brien. Having seen a lot of these shorts, one can sympathize. Miss Short mostly leaves the pratfalls to O'Brien, who also directs -- but she does a good slow burn, and keeps busy, plumbing out sinks and mopping floors in high heels, spilling things on herself and going bumpity-bump down the staircase. Pete Smith narrates in his typical snarky fashion, but it's clear that O'Brien is the butt of his scorn.

Dorothy Short and David Barclay were married when they made this movie. They were divorced four years later. Given this short subject, I'm surprised it lasted that long.
