A Pretty Well Executed Indonesian Heist Movie

This movie was a lot better than I expected. At first I thought it would be a bit cheesy especially looking at the cast that consisted of young actors and actresses. But as I continued watching, it was surprisingly good with some smooth transition between one plot to another and a wonderful story telling with some excitement throughout the movie.

It obviously had high production value with the awesome setting, amazing fight choreography, some cool enough action sequence and especially the heist itself. There was even a trademark plot twist of such genre that was brilliantly inserted in here. With such ending, I would not mind to see a sequel should they chose to do so, even if this time the duration was probably a bit too long.

Great job from the cast and crew, in particular Angga Dwimas Sasongko as the writer and director who I believed had put in so much effort into making this as good as it is.

A bad movie and a good movie in one movie

This feels weird to me because I can seperates the reviews of this movie into two parts with different impressions. The first part of the movie was very awkward, the actors were overacting, and the catchphrases were very cringe. The personality of actors seems forced that make it looks like they were acting rather than a natural act. It makes me feels like watching a soap opera rather than an action movie. They were very bad at explaining that it feels like they were reading a textbook. The good first part was when the protagonist angry out of stress after done making the art. After that the movie back again with a cringe moment where they create a plan and explaining it. It just very bad in that sense so I score it around 4 only for the first part.

But after the first heist done, somehow the movie feels very different and become more interesting. The acting more fluid and more natural. The heist become really-really good, and the action said the same. The only awkward thing was when they added a new character out of nowhere, who was good at fighting, but there was no explanation who he was. And the other bad thing was about the ending where the movie just ends abruptly, even though there still so many thing that need to be questioned and answered.

Overall for the entire length of the movie, the second part contrastly different than the first part, make it just like a different movie mashed up together, that's how awkward is this. For the second part I give 8.5.

Next is music. The music (or OST) in this movie is very horrible and out of place. It just like an ost out of a comedy sketch. This should be not implemented in this kind of movie. Even if it is, it should not be placed in the entire of movie. It was very unbearable, especially for someone that enjoy atmospheric music in movie like myself.

The Cinematography of this film is superb. That's the only thing I constantly enjoyable from start to finish. If there was no noticable CG, I score it 10 for cinematography alone. But because there were a minor imperfect CG, I score it 9.

Looking at the after ending, my expectation there will be a second movie. I hope the producer learn from mistakes and create more enjoyable movie in the future.

Indonesian action films recommended!

This film is very good, the cast is slick and can bring us into the film by Angga Dwimas Sasongko, the action is cool but there are still many shortcomings in this film , there are lots of less important supporting characters like the guy who suddenly comes to help Sarah. Sarah's character is a tomboy but even less romantic than a piko character. But okay, I like the painting part which is really realistic and good with comedy seasoning which is enough to make me laugh it's just that sponsoring brands here is very rude and somewhat exaggerated rather annoying. It's just that smooth acting and CGI help this film

Rate: 8/10.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR TO INDONESIAN FILM GENRE!

Exceeds my expectation!

The story telling (which I consider usually lacking in most Indonesian films) is very good even with the twists and turns. Very good pacing that makes 2,5 hours gone in a flash.

Great characters introduction and development to make the audience invested in them. No character is wasted. The casts clearly put themselves into their characters to give such great performance.

Great cinematography, action choreography and editing that enhance and emphasize the scenes and story. No scene is wasted or draggy.

And I also love the backstory of the painting itself and the philosophy that becomes the theme of the film.

Mencuri Raden Saleh is the best Indonesian film in 2022 so far.

The title didn't attract me AT ALL, but turned out it's A GOOD MOVIE TO WATCH!!!

Mencuri Raden Saleh? I was, "Hah? What kind of movie is this?" The title didn't attract me, lol, and I didn't expect this movie to be this good, like AT ALL. I watched it because of the hype on social media a.k.a Instagram and Twitter and some friends recommended it to me bcs this movie is different, they said. Turned out the movie, the plots, are full of unexpected things and I love that! I recommend this movie to anyone who loves to watch movie that makes you guess and think. 8.6/10 for me. Far above my expectation! Well done! Would love to see more movies like this one! Big appreciate to the producer, crews, and of course the great actors!

Heist Film, Indonesian Style

Once in a while, an Indonesian thriller that doesn't feature Iko Uwais succeeds. This film is one of them. It might be carried by a young cast but the actors prove to be equal to the challenge of making a good action movie/thriller.

Angge Dwimas Sasongko is able to put together a heist movie that doesn't disappoint, and which, in fact, totally gets the viewer's attention. The plus factor is that the object of the heist has great historical significance for Indonesia's struggle against Dutch rule. It's, thus, a worthy object of desire.

Raden Saleh is a highly respected Javanese painter in the 19th century, who like many artists of his age who were involved in nationalistic movements, spent time in Europe. His painting, The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro, which he did in 1857, is considered as his definitive work, and reflects his deep nationalistic fervor. Diponegoro was a key figure in the Java War. He remains, to this day, a key figure in Indonesia's nationhood.

Like any respectable heist film, this has veritable twists. And the way it's carried out is believable.

Kudos to the writer and director for an admirable work aided much by a young cast that performs like veterans on the screen.

It's a fun and fulfilling film

This movie is not exceptional by doing something new, but because they know how to make each part fun and enjoyable. As a heist movie, it manages to capture adventure, drama, romance, and mystery in one pack with great storyline that came up from a single premise.

The writer/director clearly knows how to give an equal spotlight for all aspects involved from character development, technicalities, visual effects, and so on. I still got bored at times due to very long runtime (2.5 hours) and the pacing is a bit odd with few plot holes, but I have to say it's a very great experience to watch a movie as fulfilling and complete as this. Very recommended.

Best Indonesia movie about heist

This is the new face of indonesian movies! Actually i am not really fans of indonesian movies, but this movie really make me questions myself. The actings is really good, i love the effort from the actors doing some action and make it really cool, their expression seem so natural and make me impressed. The storyline is good, is not perfect but it's still good, there still some plothole in this movies and i hope the scriptwriter can fill it in the sequel, but it's really good, it's so rare i see some good storyline in indonesian action movies. The CGV is really amazing, it's good and felt so natural. The make up artis, they did a perfect job, but For make up after fighting, you have to add more bruises. It's really worth my 2,5 hours watched this movie. Keep the good work guys, and i hope i can hear a good news about the sequel.

best indonesian heist movie in 2022!

This film is about a male student whose father is imprisoned. This student has an excellent talent for painting, he has a close friend who is a hacker and a girlfriend who is an judo- athlete. One day Piko (the main character) was given an offer to replicate the painting of the kidnapping of Diponegoro by a famous painter, Raden Saleh for a fee of 2 M. Piko agreed, assisted by his friend Ucup, they carried out the action, on the day they gave the replica painting to the person who order it turns out that the person asked for another request which they could not refuse. Moreover, these individuals threaten the safety of Piko's father who is in prison. Piko, who was trapped, finally accepted the person's terrible request. So far this is the best indonesian movie in 2022, i didn't expect this movie will be so lit. All the actors played very well, there were no cringe scenes and the plot was really really cool. There are many plot twists, being tense, sad, laughing all those feelings got mixed up while watching this movie Although the plot seems kinda fast but I really enjoy this movie. 9/10 !!

The best theft film owned by Indonesia

A group of amateur youths who perform a dangerous mission by stealing famous and historical paintings located in the Presidential Palace. The theft became the greatest theft of the century.

The best and most amazing film owned by Indonesia. Carrying the theme of robbery with a young cast, this film gives us great action and excitement. For two hours we don't feel boredom, instead we are immersed in the admiration of the action throughout the film. A simple and light story with a neat plot twist. However, I feel that there are still some scenes that I think are still hollow so the scenes look less steady. For dialogue throughout the film I like, it's not too rigid and uses language and speech like everyday life. Amazing action also complements this film, from fight scenes to scenes in executing theft plans that are familiar with Hollywood movies. All of this becomes a complete whole in this film. If we look carefully, many references from Hollywood movies are used. Overall, this is the best heist film for Indonesia.

For young actors performed brilliantly with the roles played. Iqbal Ramadhan, who plays Piko, appears with genius in manipulating paintings. Piko's internal conflicts became the foundation for establishing the plot of this film. It's just that Piko's role as leader may still feel lacking and should be able to have an impact on the film, not Ucup, played by Angga Yunanda, who throughout the film feels like a Leader. Indeed, Ucup appears as Piko's best friend playing more as the brains of the theft planning. Sarah, played by Aghinu Haque, who is good at fighting here, is very supportive of her face and stature. Tuktuk (Ari Irham) and Gofar (Umay Shihab) become a duo of brothers who perform hilariously. Don't forget Fella (Rachel Amanda) who is one of the support systems with her wealth capital. With different skills and backgrounds become complementary in starting the theft plot.

Amazing Action Movie

This movie is perfect. I love the characters and the plot twist. Would highly recommend. The acting is pretty good, the storyline is so interesting. I have no idea what to criticize. All of this 2 hours is so amazing for me. I wish I could watch it at the cinema to experience the best watch. The painting is also realistic. I wonder how they made it. I think this is the best Indonesian movie for now. It will be great if Indonesia make more movies like this. Two hours with no boring moment. The comedy also and the little love line is just feel enough and right. What a great movie. And with my favorite actor Angga Yunanda, perfect.

Super fun. This film is not only a film that will show how a group of teenager doing the heist, but also how the characters develop and interact to create conflict and make the story richer. A warm spectacle between friendship and brotherhood, and how the enthusiasm to fights for what we think was right. Well done!

Centered around a group of young individuals planning a high-stakes robbery, the film delivers intense suspense, thrilling action, and strong character dynamics. With sleek visuals and modern cinematography, it boasts an international feel rarely seen in local films. The well-choreographed action sequences and stylish direction keep the audience engaged. AMAZED!

It's both impressive and commendable to see this film push the boundaries of the Indonesian film industry, particularly within the heist genre, which is quite rare in Indonesian cinema. The film is remarkably well-executed, making the most of its 2.5-hour runtime without feeling excessive. The characters are distinct and engaging, and the plot is clear and purposeful.

The story revolves around Piko (Iqbaal Ramadhan), a student who moonlights as a forger. He is tasked with replicating "The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro" by the renowned Raden Saleh. However, what begins as a simple replication job quickly escalates into a high-stakes heist involving the exchange of the original painting for a fake, leading to numerous complications.

The choice of "The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro" as the central element of the film is significant. It's not just because Raden Saleh is a well-known Indonesian painter, but also because the painting represents a historical event from 1830, where Prince Diponegoro was deceitfully captured. A Dutch artist, Nicolas Pieneman, later created a painting titled "The Surrender of Prince Diponegoro," which contrasts with the original by showcasing Diponegoro's defeat and the Dutch triumph.

Masterpiece Heist with a Few Cracks

Mencuri Raden Saleh kicks off with Piko's street-smart schemes and quickly pulls you into its slick art-forgery meets high-stakes heist world. The cinematography pops, the chase sequences hum, and Iqbaal Ramadhan's easy charisma makes you root for this ragtag crew from the first getaway car. It's a visual treat that balances clever twists and witty banter, proving the filmmakers know how to keep the energy up.

That said, when the story pivots into its more heartfelt moments-especially around Piko's dad-the shift can feel abrupt. Some of the side characters don't get enough development to make their stakes truly resonate, so a few emotional beats hit flat instead of tugging at your heartstrings. And at a leaner two-and-a-half hours, the finale drags just enough that you'll find yourself glancing at the clock before the big twist.

Still, for a local blockbuster, Mencuri Raden Saleh delivers a smart, fun ride that's worth your ticket. It doesn't quite stick every landing, but its style, chemistry, and daring gambits ensure you'll leave entertained-and already curious about where the next caper will take this crew.

raden saleh

2 and a half hours is not a short time, normally a film with a duration of more than 2 hours can be boring even if it is an action film. But in this film we can't get sleepy at all.

Penoton is made tense by the author, made greget. Unpredictable storyline makes it difficult for the audience to guess the storyline.

The visuals are dark themed, but do not make the audience hurt their eyes, the storyline and characterisation are also arguably perfect. I am at a loss to give criticism for this film because there is almost no gap to say "this is not a perfect film".

9/10 is an appropriate score for this great film.

a highly interesting...

Indonesian crime/action/heist movie, where i most of all will applaude the complexity of the plot, its tip of the finger filmograhics, very nice effectuation of special effects, and a real dramaturgical highly prescicionally made musical score for a film if its kin. Bravo... and a dacapo may be asked.

Only a few drawbacks must be mentioned, and thats fairly and sharely because im a grumpy old man, that easily falls asleep if a film lasts longer than 2 hours, its too long on its playtime. And i do see some small moments of ''off-acting'', especially where romance and emotions are the target. In this kinda genresetting it didnt fit in so good, but these are just nanomoments in a film that is megapacked with action...

i also praise the use of original language , at least the version i came across, indonesian language and currency seems astronomical anyway, so i might be a trillionaire in those settings...

so if you like smooth criminals heisting people that deserve a pinch on the tip of the nose then watch this one...

A near perfect heist movie that keeps you engaged throughout

Came across this movie randomly in Netflix and I am so glad I did. Heist movies are one of my favourite genres. This movie is also my first Indonesian movie and I was pleasantly surprised how well this was made.

The movie runs almost for 150 minutes but it keeps you engaged throughout the film and doesn't make you feel bored. I don't know about the actors or their prior works but they all did a pretty decent job.

It has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. The movie isn't perfect but the flaws are overcome by a tight knit screenplay and story.

Overall a very well made heist thriller from Indonesia that's a must watch for the fans of this genre.
