Amazed and Proud as Indonesian!
It's both impressive and commendable to see this film push the boundaries of the Indonesian film industry, particularly within the heist genre, which is quite rare in Indonesian cinema. The film is remarkably well-executed, making the most of its 2.5-hour runtime without feeling excessive. The characters are distinct and engaging, and the plot is clear and purposeful.
The story revolves around Piko (Iqbaal Ramadhan), a student who moonlights as a forger. He is tasked with replicating "The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro" by the renowned Raden Saleh. However, what begins as a simple replication job quickly escalates into a high-stakes heist involving the exchange of the original painting for a fake, leading to numerous complications.
The choice of "The Arrest of Prince Diponegoro" as the central element of the film is significant. It's not just because Raden Saleh is a well-known Indonesian painter, but also because the painting represents a historical event from 1830, where Prince Diponegoro was deceitfully captured. A Dutch artist, Nicolas Pieneman, later created a painting titled "The Surrender of Prince Diponegoro," which contrasts with the original by showcasing Diponegoro's defeat and the Dutch triumph.
