It was named after Charles Cocks, 1st Baron Somers (1725) but was originally granted by William III to Lord Chancellor, John Somers (1651), The area has been strongly influenced by the three nearby mainline north railway terminals, Euston (1838), St Pancras (1868) and King's Cross (1852), and in recent years has undergone extensive development work, for example, as the nearby entrance to Eurostar and European travel. Somers Town is hence rarely used as a name today.
