The first chilean superhero movie ever.
Despite sharing a similar premise to Kickass (2010), a normal person without any superpowers becomes a superhero in the real world, it predates both the movie and the original graphic novel by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.; released in 2008.
Director Ernesto Díaz Espinoza always like to put references and tributes in his movies, especially to 1970's pop culture. This can be noted with the 70's inspired disco soundtrack, that resembles the score of many TV shows and movies of the decade.
During Fantastic Fest 2009, Marko Zaror announced the making of an independent American remake titled ''Defender 3D'', produced and directed by stunt coordinator, Andy Cheng. Zaror would reprise his role as the hero (now named Defender instead of Mirageman) in this English speaking adaptation, and the film would have been presented in 3D format. In October 23th 2009, an early production trailer was posted on the now defunct Defender 3D website with no distributor attached. No news about the project has been given since and although it has not been confirmed, the movie may have been shelved due to funding issues. Both Marko Zaror and Andy Cheng went on to work separately on several movie and TV projects since.
The remake also had Sarote Tabcum Jr. as a producer and John Constantine as an executive producer as shown in its teaser poster.
In an appearance at Comic Con in New York in 2008, the director of this film, Ernesto Diaz Espinoza, acknowledged the influence on this film of TAXI DRIVER (1976), the Spiderman TV show (1978), the French New Wave, and the Mexican movies starring wrestler Santo as a crimefighting hero.
