The shipwreck in Puenta Arenas (Chile) is what remains of the SV Lord Lonsdale, built in 1889. It was hulked in 1909 after a cargo (coal) fire. It is not known how it ended up beached at this location at some point in the 1940s.
Comprises of eight chapters: The Skin of the Brontosaurus, Landscapes of the Soul, Songs and Songlines, The Nomadic Alternative, Journey to the End of the World, Chatwin's Rucksack, Cobra Verde, and The Book Is Closed.
According to Werner Herzog, he wanted to create a "erratic quest" rather than a "biographical film" which are "not a good soil from which movies grow.
In 2008 The Times ranked Bruce Chatwin as number 46 on their list of "50 Greatest British Writers Since 1945."
Was commissioned by BBC Arts' Mark Bell to mark 30 years since the death of the renowned travel writer and novelist.
