The film was designed for use with the Navigational Cinema technology which allows the viewer to choose between two ways the story can go at certain times within the film, ultimately featuring 96 different story possibilities. The feature is only present on the Blu-ray Disc version of the film. Another film with a similar gimmick was Final Destination 3 (2006), also from Warner Bros. under their subsidiary label New Line Cinema.
Jeffrey Combs (Dr. Richard Benjamin Vannacutt) is the only returning cast member from Il mistero della casa sulla collina (1999).
To save on production costs, Warner Bros. moved filming to Bulgaria. Since the cast and crew didn't speak Bulgarian, several translators were employed on set.
A third installment in the series had been planned, but poor DVD sales for this film led Dark Castle to cancel these plans in October 2010.
Ali Larter turned down the chance to return for the sequel.
