The film recouped triple its budget in its theatrical release. Together, both "Hostel" films cost a total of $15 million dollars and grossed a total of $115 million dollars theatrically worldwide, making the "Hostel" films one of the most profitable horror franchises.
Heather Matarazzo had been sober for about a year when she arrived in Prague and attended a "get to know you" party prior to shooting. She claimed she was constantly offered pills by the producers to help her beat the jet lag and "get some sleep", but she repeatedly turned them down. She also alleged that when Bijou Phillips found out she was sober, she pushed her against a wall and choked her for 15 to 20 seconds and said, "I'm going to make you relapse on this film." Matarazzo said she was too embarrassed to tell the director or producers about the incident. Coincidentally, early in the film, Bijou's character expresses her annoyance with Heather's character and says, "I swear to God, I'm gonna choke the bitch to death."
(at around 10 mins) Eli Roth received some criticism over the amount of female nudity in the first film. Therefore, the first bit of nudity he included in this sequel was a brief shot of a fully naked man.
Mrs. Bathory (Monika Malácová) who bathes in virgin blood is based on a real woman. Elizabeth Báthory, also called the "Blood Countess" of Hungary, supposedly struck terror throughout that region between 1590 and 1610 when she killed more than 600 young female servants and peasants. Her story led to a popular folkloric legend that she was a vampire who bathed in the blood of virgins in order to retain her beauty. Modern historians believe that this is a myth that comes from highly exaggerated accounts: in his personal correspondence, the investigator who arrested the countess only mentioned two girls found inside the castle (one dead, one living); he later falsely claimed that he found the countess covered in blood (she was only having dinner). Although her conviction was reportedly based on over 300 testimonies, most were only second-hand, from people who had heard rumors from others; mutilated bodies found in graves and other locations were often attributed to the countess without much proof. No written files on that number of missing girls have ever been found, and the countess' servants all confessed under torture. The countess was wealthy and powerful, and it is believed that several of her opponents conceived or embellished these stories out of political and financial motives.
Edwige Fenech came out of acting retirement to play the role of The Professor. Eli Roth, a huge fan of Fenech, met her in Rome during his Hostel (2005) press tour, and asked her if she'd ever consider acting again. Fenech, now a highly successful producer and film distributor in Italy, told Roth she'd only act again for him, so Roth wrote the part for her.
