The creation of this pilot stemmed from the Smallville (2001) episode Aqua (2005). Alan Ritchson played Arthur Curry in the episode but he was not considered for the pilot because the creators did not want it to be a spin-off from Smallville (2001).
After the pilot was not picked up, it was released for download on iTunes and was the #1 downloaded program. It was the first unsold pilot to be available on iTunes.
Justin Hartley also played Green Arrow in Smallville (2001) at around the same time this episode was released.
Arthur Curry's boat is named Quint, presumably named after Robert Shaw's character in Lo squalo (1975).
Adrianne Palicki made other one time DC Comics television appearances. She was in the Smallville (2001) episode Covenant (2004) and was Wonder Woman in the failed NBC pilot of that name. Eventually Palicki had a much longer amount of success in comic book based television when she joined the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013) as a regular in the second season.
