It's 2025 And I Just Watched This Is Spinal Tap For The First Time - These Are My Honest Thoughts
Image
After checking off legendary comedy "The Naked Gun," and then finally getting around to watching beloved musical "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," it feels fitting that musical mockumentary "This Is Spinal Tap" gets cleared from my watchlist in time for "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" arriving later this year. My encounter with the loudest band in the U.K. goes as far as their guest appearance on "The Simpsons," in which the band does a gig in Springfield, and Otto complains that the audience is too loud and ruining it for everyone. As it turns out, though, Spinal Tap predates even their big-screen outing. The band was a creation of Christopher Guest,...

The 15 Best Comedies Streaming On Hulu Right Now
Image
Picture two films in front of you. One is a three-hour drama, an epic about an important issue acclaimed by critics, a piece of cinematic homework you have to see lest a Letterboxd gatekeeper sneers at you. The other is maybe 90 minutes and is really, really funny, critical consensus be damned. I know which one I'm picking.

Like many others, I am a huge fan of comedy movies. It's the art of finding visceral, uncontrollable catharsis through this maddening existence we call "being alive." It requires all the facets of dramatic storytelling with the added task of poking fun at the "normal" elements of dramatic storytelling. It's so hard, and when it's pulled off well, there's nothing like it. And there are many great comedy films to check out on streaming services, including, but not limited to Hulu.

So the next time you're scrolling through Hulu looking for a flick to watch,...

Before Doctor Who, Peter Capaldi Played An Eerily Similar Doctor In A Box Office Hit
Image
The revived "Doctor Who" has mostly cast young (or young-ish) actors for its lead role as the Doctor. The benefit of this approach is that the young actor feels fresh to the audience; for instance, Matt Smith was almost completely unknown before being cast as the 11th Doctor, so fans didn't have any baggage from his previous roles affecting their judgment of him.

But fans having a pre-existing relationship with the new actor playing the Doctor isn't necessarily a bad thing. When Peter Capaldi was cast as the 12th Doctor, he was already known for a dozen other memorable roles, a couple of which even happened within the "Doctor Who" universe. On top of that, he had already played a doctor in "World War Z," specifically one who works for the World Health Organization. That's correct: Before Capaldi starred in "Doctor Who," he portrayed a doctor for W.H.O.

My Screen Life: ‘Succession’ creator Jesse Armstrong on AI fears and the one TV series to watch this year
Image
Jesse Armstrong met his longtime collaborator Sam Bain at university and the pair later wrote for UK comedy-sketch series Smack The Pony, before creating sitcoms Peep Show and The Old Guys, and comedy dramas Fresh Meat and Babylon. Together they also co-wrote Chris Morris’s 2010 Bafta-winning feature Four Lions.

Armstrong collaborated with Armando Iannucci on The Thick Of It, Veep and feature In The Loop – for which he was nominated for a best adapted screenplay Oscar – and with Charlie Brooker on Black Mirror.

In 2018, Armstrong created Succession, a comedy drama detailing the machinations of a family that runs a vast media conglomerate.

‘Tall Tales & Murder’: Dark Comedy Crime Drama From ‘Veep’ Director, ‘Love/Hate’ Creator Gets Two-Season Order From BBC and RTÉ, Casts ‘Black Doves,’ ‘Game of Thrones’ Stars
Image
Stuart Carolan and Chris Addison have teamed up for the darkly comedic crime drama “Tall Tales & Murder,” and have cast an ensemble of names from “Black Doves,” “Game of Thrones,” “Derry Girls” and “Peaky Blinders” to star.

BBC Northern Ireland and Irish national broadcaster RTÉ have commissioned two six-part series of the drama, in association with Screen Ireland.

“Tall Tales & Murder” was written by Carolan, best known as the writer and creator of “Love/Hate,” one of the most critically acclaimed and successful Irish dramas of all time (and a show that served as an early springboard for many Irish stars), and co-created with Addison, a double Emmy and DGA Award-winner who directed and produced episode of “Veep” and co-created “Breeders.” It’s produced by Avalon, in association with Ireland’s Metropolitan Pictures (“Kin”).

Based on the much loved eight-book “Dublin Trilogy” of novels by Caimh McDonnell, “Tall Tales & Murder” — which...

BBC & RTÉ Order Two Seasons Of Aidan Gillen-Starring Comedy Crime Drama ‘Tall Tales & Murder’ From Chris Addison & Stuart Carolan
Image
Exclusive: Tall Tales & Murder, a comedic crime drama starring Aidan Gillen from Emmy-winning Veep director Chris Addison and Love/Hate creator Stuart Carolan, has landed a rare double-season order at the BBC and RTÉ.

Based on the Dublin Trilogy – confusingly a set of eight books – by Caimh McDonnell, the show’s plot is being kept under wraps. The books follow the interconnected lives and adventures of Paul Mulchrone, Brigit Conroy, and Bunny McGarry in Dublin.

Tall Tales & Murder will also star Ella Lily Hyland (Black Doves), Philippa Dunne (Amandaland) and Packy Lee (Peaky Blinders). Its other lead, Gillen, is best known for meaty roles in Peaky Blinders, Mayor of Kingstown and hit Irish drama Kin.

Tall Tales & Murder comes from Addison, who has won Emmys for his work on Veep and also co-created Breeders with Martin Freeman and Simon Blackwell, and Carolan, who created one of RTÉ’s most beloved dramas of all time.

‘Succession’ Creator’s 26% Rotten Tomatoes Satire Is a Streaming Hit
Image
Despite the massive popularity and cultural impact of HBO's Succession, the show's creator, Jesse Armstrong, seemingly couldn't replicate the show's success with his latest project, the similarly satirical film Mountainhead. Conceived, pitched, and produced in the span of a few months, Mountainhead debuted on HBO on May 30 to mostly positive reviews, but a rancid audience response. Despite the divisive reception, the movie topped the viewership charts on HBO, displacing holdover hit Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson.

According to FlixPatrol, Mountainhead was the most-watched movie on Max, which will soon revert to the name HBO Max, on June 1. It scored 433 points in total, while Mickey 17 earned 405 points in second place. Mountainhead stars Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef as men of extreme wealth, who get together for a weekend getaway while the world crumbles around them. The four men engage in petty arguments and display abhorrent behavior over the weekend,...

‘It’s a Bit of a Suicide Mission’: How ‘Succession’ Creator Jesse Armstrong Wrote and Directed His Tech-Bro Satire ‘Mountainhead’ in Just Six Months
Image
It was late November, just after the election, and Jesse Armstrong was trying to resist telling another story about unfathomably rich tycoons. It’d been less than two years since “Succession” — his Emmy-winning, culture-defining series about the corrosive family behind a massive media empire — had aired its note-perfect finale on HBO, and it seemed foolhardy to return to the world of extreme wealth again. But after reviewing a book about crypto con artist Sam Bankman-Fried for the Times Literary Supplement in late 2023, Armstrong found himself falling down a rabbit hole of research into the peculiar universe of tech bro billionaires.

“People are impossible to write until I can hear their voice,” he says. “There’s an ease of entry to this world because the tech people are often going on each other’s podcasts, so you can directly hear how CEOs of these corporations talk. It was a tone of...

Mountainhead Review: Succession creator Jesse Armstrong’s satire is bitingly funny, clever, brutal, and timely.
Image
Plot: A group of billionaire friends get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.

Review: Jesse Armstrong has been behind some of the best writing of the last three decades, going back to the biting British comedies Peep Show and The Thick of It, along with the classic Black Mirror episode “The Entire History of You,” before he hit it huge with his HBO series Succession. Making his feature directorial debut with the HBO film Mountainhead, Armstrong combines the strongest satirical elements from his writing career into a prescient look at four of the wealthiest men on the planet debating and quarrelling as society crumbles around them. Mountainhead is a brilliant character study that is incredibly timely and disturbing as to what may happen behind closed doors that most of us will never get to open.

Imagine if Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Sam Altman all...

‘Mountainhead’ TV Review: It’s The End Of The World In Jesse Armstrong’s ‘Succession’ Successor & The Techlords Feel Fine, Sorta
Image
Spoiler Alert – This review does contain details of HBO/Max’s May 31 debuting Mountainhead movie – but not the ones they asked us not to reveal.

If you are still mourning Jesse Armstrong’s now departed Succession, then the Emmy winning writer’s HBO movie Mountainhead will provide the satirical methadone and “grin f*cking” you’ve been craving.

Still, as is the case with the opiate substitute, despite the altitude of the Park City location, the Ramy Youssef, Cory Michael Smith, Steve Carell, & Jason Schwartzman starrer might not get you as high as you want.

Filmed deftly and swiftly on location just a couple of months ago in the magnificent peaks of Sundance’s soon-to-be former home of Park City, Utah, multi-Emmy winner Armstrong’s directorial debut depicts a weekend poker retreat by a quartet of tech overlords gone very wrong as the world blows up. While not quite Mary Shelly,...

Alexander Skarsgård tells us about becoming Murderbot for Apple TV+'s new sci-fi series
Image
The beloved Murderbot book series by Martha Wells is coming to the small screen on May 16, and if you're a sci-fi lover, there's reason to get excited. Murderbot stars Alexander Skarsgård as a self-hacking security construct (called a SecUnit) who has overridden its own governor module, the bit of technology that forced it to obey humans. Now it has free will and can do whatever it wants...so long as the humans don't find out what it's done and melt it down to scrap. With such high stakes, it can't afford to slip up, so rather than drawing attention it distracts itself by binge-watching cheesy soap operas. Who among us hasn't?

The Murderbot Diaries books have won a slew of major science fiction literary awards, including the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus. But even more importantly, they've carved out a passionate fanbase of readers who can't get enough of the SecUnit's...

These officials are getting it wrong. This ongoing mini-saga of the second Donald Trump era isn’t Armando Iannucci’s American series, Veep; it’s becoming more like Iannucci’s series, The Thick Of It, in which British politicians and their profane spin doctors constantly obsess over words, doublespeak, and linguistic technicalities in order to...

Sidemen soccer match raises £4.7 million for charity, cements its legacy as top-tier creator entertainment
Image
The Sidemen charity match is one of the biggest spectacles in the creator world, and the 2025 edition of the annual soccer showdown delivered on its considerable hype. With big names like MrBeast, iShowSpeed, Logan Paul, Kai Cenat, Mark Rober, and xQc dotting the pitch, the match drew 90,000 in-person attendees, peaked at about 2.5 million online viewers, and raised more than £4.7 million for its chosen charities.

The Sidemen charity match format dates back 2016, but the 2025 iteration took the event series to new heights, thanks in large part to a change in venue. For the first time, the group headlined by creators Ksi, Miniminter, Zerkaa, Tbjzl, Behzinga, Vikkstar123, and W2S brought its footballing fun to London’s Wembley Stadium, the home of the English national team.

The teams that faced off at Wembley possessed enough star power to fill the venue to its maximum capacity. In previous years’ charity matches, the “YouTube...

The 25 Best British Comedies of all Time
Charlize Theron, Mark Wahlberg, Seth Green, Edward Norton, Jason Statham, Yasiin Bey, and Franky G in The Italian Job (2003)
While Japan has Samurai Cinema, and the USA has Westerns, the UK has British comedy. Some of the world’s most influential movies have come from the comedy genre, largely thanks to the way that it tends to take mundane or taboo subjects and turn them into something that can be hilarious, thought-provoking, and in some cases, even revolutionary. Its impact can be seen in everything from entertainment to politics and real-life attitudes toward social classes, racism, gender roles, and so much more.

Choosing the best 25 films to exist in this space is a tough task because of how vast and diverse British comedy is. It’s important to give credit where credit is due to the films that have transcended the medium of film to make an impact on life as we know it. But at the same time, it would be a disservice to create a list that...

Jason Isaacs Is at His Most Hilarious in This Sharp, Pitch-Dark Political Satire From the Creator of ‘Veep’
Image
There are few satirists in the entertainment industry today who are more clever than Armando Ianucci, the brilliant writer/director of beloved comedy shows like Veep, I’m Alan Partridge, The Thick of It, and Avenue 5. Iannucci has a unique ability to take the most absurd aspects of politics and depict them in an entertaining yet informative way that gives his audience a greater understanding of the unusual systems that dictate their rights. Even if Iannucci built the foundation of his reputation thanks to his work on television, he has proven to be an equally successful filmmaker. Iannucci satirized one of the most climactic moments of the Cold War in his darkly comedic satire The Death of Stalin, a star-studded film that features a standout performance by Jason Isaacs.

In the ongoing streaming wars and the endless discussions about the state of the entertainment industry that they've sparked, NBCUniversal's Peacock has become something of a contentious topic, if not an outright comedic punching bag -- with even Nikki Glaser's opening monologue at the 2025 Golden Globes joking that "The Day of the Jackal" is "about a top secret elite sniper that no one can find 'cause he's on Peacock." 'Succession' Creator Jesse Armstrong Returns to HBO to Tackle a Financial Crisis

Seven-time Emmy winner and Succession creator Jesse Armstrong has found his next project. Variety reports that Armstrong will re-team with the show's executive producer Frank Rich for a new original film for HBO. The plot will follow "four friends who convene during a dramatic international financial crisis."

There aren't many details right now other than Armstrong is penning the script, and production will reportedly begin sometime later this year. The studio is checking on actors' schedules for availability, though no names have been announced as of this moment. No release date has been announced either.

Armstrong is primarily known for his work on television, and his biggest show, Succession, ended in 2022 after four seasons. During its time on air, the series won a total of 19 Emmys, including three for best drama series, with several statues awarded to Armstrong for his writing. Unsurprisingly, Succession is also one of the most critically-lauded series of all time,...

Mandrake asks politely, in an arch British way, why he feels the need to blow up the world. Steve Coogan at an event for Tropic Thunder (2008)
Dr Strangelove | West End adaptation to be screened in cinemas via National Theatre Live
Steve Coogan at an event for Tropic Thunder (2008)
Steve Coogan stars in Armando Iannucci’s West End adaptation of Dr Strangelove, which will be broadcast in cinemas next year.

“You can’t fight in here, this is the War Room!” is one of the most iconic quotes from Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 masterpiece Dr Strangelove Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying About The Bomb. Starring Peter Sellers in multiple roles, it told the story of a rogue US general who triggers a nuclear crisis.

Kubrick directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Terry Southern and Peter George.

Satirist Armando Iannucci, who himself co-wrote and directed a film about useless politicians inadvertently triggering a war, the wonderful In The Loop, itself a spin-off from acerbic sitcom The Thick Of It, has adapted the film for the stage with Sean Foley, who also directed the show.

Steve Coogan takes on the daunting task of following in Sellers’ footsteps,...

Morto Stalin, se ne fa un altro (2017)
Satirist and The Death Of Stalin writer-director Armando Iannucci will take aim at social media in his next film.

Writer, director and satirist Armando Iannucci has revealed that his next film will poke fun at social media. The project will see him team up with Jon Brown, with whom he previously worked on TV comedy series The Franchise, a satire of superhero movie-making. According to Chortle, Iannucci said on Daniel Merrifield’s The Movie Dweeb podcast, “I’m always interested in where power and influence is, so social media is something actually that Jon [Brown] and I have been working on together, on a film script, which we hope to shoot next year”.

Ianucci went on to say that it would be “set in that world of that next generation of your Zuckerbergs, your Musks and Peter Thiels, and all those people’ – referring to the founder of Facebook, owner of X and Facebook investor respectively.

Steve Coogan’s Five Most Essential Comedy Performances
Image
If you’re able to get to London by January 25th, or to Dublin in February, you can still get yourself a seat to see Dr. Strangelove, adapted for the stage by The Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci and starring Iannucci’s frequent star, Steve Coogan. If you’re not? All you need is a Hulu login to see Coogan’s next most recent performance.

In this week’s episode of What We Do in the Shadows, Coogan débuts as Roderick Cravensworth, father to Matt Berry’s Laszlo — or, to be more precise, his ghost, Roderick having died more than a century ago. It’s reductive to say Roderick is the kind of father who would drive his son to rebel by embracing vampirism, but it might also be true: He’s pompous, he weasels his way into relationships far too quickly and he’s lightly emotionally abusive to...

Brian Cox Suits Up As Santa Claus in Richard Curtis’ Animated ‘That Christmas’ Trailer
Image
Brian Cox’s Santa Claus is coming to town in the first trailer for Netflix’s animated holiday comedy That Christmas.

In the film’s first trailer, the Succession actor is sporting Kris Kringle’s standard uniform — a beard, red suit with a white fur trim and boots — as he delivers presents to children on the busiest night of the year, Christmas Eve.

That Christmas is based on a trilogy of children’s books by award-winning writer-director Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Love Actually and Yesterday) and marks his first leap into animation. The film features entwined stories about family and friends, love and loneliness and Santa Claus making a big mistake.

In her review, The Hollywood Reporter‘s Lovia Gyarkye praised the “charming animation” while adding that the movie “slyly avoids the usual mawkishness by grounding its whimsical story in the real and prickly emotions of life.
