The book of Esther (on which this film is based) is one of two books in the Bible that does not mention God. The closest it comes is when Mordecai says to Esther, "We will pray for you." The other book is Song of Songs.
Despite having top billing on some posters/advertisements, Peter O'Toole only appears in the opening scene, having only a mere 30 seconds of screen time.
It took three years for the film to reach theaters.
The film's UK DVD release was titled "Princess of Persia" (despite Esther being a queen, not a princess), and given an action-oriented cover of Esther wielding two swords, in an attempt to capitalize on the unrelated film Prince of Persia - Le sabbie del tempo (2010), which was released in UK theaters three days earlier.
The fourth and final film with Peter O'Toole and Omar Sharif. The previous ones were Lawrence d'Arabia (1962), La notte dei generali (1967) and Il ladro dell'arcobaleno (1990).
