HBO Max has reportedly removed Courage the Cowardly Dog from the platform. The classic Cartoon Network show centered on an anxious pet dog named Courage, who has to protect his overly trusting family from paranormal creatures constantly. The show began its tenure in the late ‘90s, ending in 2002 after four seasons.

The cancellation comes on the heels of multiple other cartoon shows being axed from the platform. According to Deadline, Courage the Cowardly Dog and What’s New, Scooby Doo were not available on the platform after July 31, as HBO Max moved away from kid-friendly content and reverted to their rebranding effort to be known as an adult and family programming network.

After shutting down the Cartoon Network website, several other shows from the network were removed from the streamer in 2025. Here are five of the most heartbreaking purges from the streamer:

Five years after the last iteration of Steven Universe ended, the show’s, uh, universe is expanding again.

A sequel series focused on supporting character Lars Barriga is in the works at Prime Video. Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars comes from the original show’s creator, Rebecca Sugar, and supervising director Ian Jones-Quartey, who will executive produce. Cartoon Network Studios is behind the project, which was announced Tuesday at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

If he was starting out today, Dexter’s Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky would “make cartoon after cartoon until something hits.”

That was Tartakovsky’s pearl of wisdom delivered to a packed Annecy audience as he celebrated 25 years of Cartoon Network Studios with a sextet of creators of some of the biggest American cartoons of all time, including The Powerpuff Girls, Adventure Time and Steven Universe.

Tartakovsky, who is also in Annecy promoting Netflix’s Fixed, figures it’s easier than ever to get your big break because young cartoonists can flood YouTube with ideas.

“It’s partly independent now because you can make it and put it on your own kind of cable channel,” he added. “That’s what I’d do [if I were starting now]. I’d work a day job and then at night I’d make cartoon after cartoon until something hits. It was more difficult when we were coming up.

After announcing multiple reboots and spin-offs of popular classic Cartoon Network shows, it seems Warner Bros. is doubling down on its plans, teasing that the future of its animation division will involve bringing back existing IP as it "makes good business sense." In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Warner Bros. executive Vanessa Brookman stated, "The easiest way for me to do that now is to do it with our really beloved IP." Fans of Ultraman: Rising got disappointing news this week. The 2024 Netflix film won’t be getting a sequel anytime soon. Shannon Tindle, who co-directed and co-wrote the movie, broke the news on Twitter/X.

2025 is in full swing, and the end of a month brings both a new one and yet another shakeup in the Netflix library. As the service that arguably paved the way for the streaming wars that have defined modern pop culture, Netflix made a name for itself by offering something for seemingly everybody.

The channel had plenty of holdovers from the previous decade, but more excitingly, it introduced plenty of other great animated series for kids of all ages to enjoy. 

There were absolutely cartoons that dabbled in standalone episodes where you could tune in any week and know what's going on. Courage had new monsters to face while Johnny Bravo was getting himself into all sorts of ridiculous mishaps. However, Cartoon Network also began dabbling with more long-form storytelling. Kids could also watch "Justice League" and partake in a more serious superhero story about governmental overreach. There was something for every palate whether you wanted silly jokes or more high-octane action.

The 2010s were full of amazing cartoons, but perhaps the biggest surprise of the decade was My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Directed by Lauren Faust, who worked on shows like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, and is married to The Powerpuff Girls creator Craig McCracken, it follows the adventures of brightly colored ponies in Equestria as they learn friendship lessons. Though aimed at younger audiences, the show developed a surprisingly large following of adult viewers, especially men, who called themselves "bronies".

Comics and graphic novel publisher Ablaze looks ahead to the end of the year as it highlights several notable new releases set for December and also previews some select titles for Q1 release.

Containing everything from epic fights to the most heartbreaking drama, The Breaker: New Waves launches in February 2025 and continues the captivating story of Si-woon Lee and the martial arts underworld. The much-anticipated sequel to the best-selling manhwa webtoon action series is not to be missed!

Also opening for early solicitation ahead of its March release is Fault Lines, an intriguing new graphic novel that presents three stories set in the three cities with their catalysts spanning three decades, all penned by Emmy-nominated animation veteran Robert Cullen.

New for December – Ablaze shines a spotlight on the wide variety of genres and fantastic works with the Ablaze Spotlight On Fables, which includes four acclaimed graphic novel titles – Wild Thing, Animal Castle Vol.

Cartoon Network reboots like Adventure Time movie and Regular Show new series spark interest in potential returns for other beloved shows. Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy are prime candidates for reboots. Series like Codename: Kids Next Door, The Cramp Twins, and Ed, Edd N Eddy also have untapped potential for successful returns.

There have been several major Cartoon Network reboots in recent years that have highlighted other series that should also return. With Adventure Time getting a movie, Regular Show receiving a new series, and a new season of Gumball on the way, this brings to mind the other fantastic shows that Cartoon Network viewers would love to see back on the small screen. Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends is coming back with a new show aimed at a preschool audience. Warner Bros. announced the new show is called Foster's Funtime for Imaginary Friends with Bloo as a mentor for younger imaginary friends. The series is expected to maintain the same pacing as the original, but with a younger audience in mind.

A new Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends show has been announced with a new image featuring Bloo's return, alongside a new cast of characters and a new role for the protagonist. The original series aired on Cartoon Network from 2004 until 2009, featuring the adventures of Mac, his imaginary friend Bloo, and all the other imaginary creatures that are found in the titular Home. John Krasinski’s new feature, If, finally premiered on May 17, 2024 and audiences around the world are able to experience the movie and form their opinions, as well as share them with others. The movie is a live-action animated fantasy comedy that targets the youngest of viewers, and based on the initial reactions from the audiences, the film has succeeded in doing that. On the other hand, the critics aren’t that impressed, as the official reviews don’t share the enthusiasm of the audiences.

The movie is actually a story about imaginary friends (the If in the title is an acronym), and it features an ensemble cast consisting of Cailey Fleming, Ryan Reynolds, Krasinski, Fiona Shaw, Alan Kim, and Liza Colón-Zayas, along with the voices of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., and Steve Carell.

The movie has a solid 84% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as an “A” CinemaScore grade.

Warner Bros. Pictures Animation has hired Shane Prigmore to serve as Senior Creative Advisor for the newly relaunched film unit under President Bill Damaschke.

In addition to advising on creative development for Wbpa’s ambitious production slate, Prigmore will also direct a film for the unit. He will be based at the studio’s HQ in Burbank, reporting directly to Damaschke.

A veteran of Skydance Animation, Walt Disney Television Animation, DreamWorks Animation, and Laika, the Annie Award winner returns to Warner Bros. more than two decades after the company gave him his start on the seminal animated classic The Iron Giant.

Prigmore’s announcement comes just as Damaschke has outlined his strategy for the newly relaunched features animation division to energize its legacy IP and develop partnerships with artists and creators worldwide to foster a slate of original storytelling resonant with global audiences of all ages.

This August, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block is further expanding its daily lineup by adding a number of classic Cn shows to its schedule.

Last month, Adult Swim expanded its daily programming by one hour. As broken by Deadline, this move has proven to be such a success that Warner Bros. Discovery is giving Adult Swim another extra hour in two months. More specifically, a new block is set to debut under the Adult Swim banner on Monday, Aug. 28. The block is called "Checkered Past," a reference to Cartoon Network's iconic checkerboard logo. It will consist of classic shows that no longer regularly air on Cartoon Network proper, such as Ed, Edd n Eddy; Dexter's Laboratory; Courage the Cowardly Dog; and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Adult Swim's "Checkered Past" will replace a rotation of current Cartoon Network shows like Teen Titans Go!.

Illumination is partnering with animation vet Mike Moon to form a new label, Moonlight.

Moonlight will augment Illumination’s existing slate and produce animated films that push beyond the family genre. In addition to his new role as President of Moonlight, Moon will serve as a Senior Creative Advisor to Illumination. Moonlight’s films will be released under Illumination’s exclusive distribution deal with Universal. Moonlight will be based in Illumination’s Santa Monica headquarters. The new label’s films will be made in the Illumination Studios Paris pipeline.

The original creator of the two animated classics is developing reboots of the series for Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe.

“The Powerpuff Girls” reboot revisits and expands upon the world of the original show, as Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup face off against a variety of villains comprised of familiar foes and new threats. “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends” will return as an original preschool animated series, welcoming a new cast of imaginary friends.
