‘The energy is infectious’: why Bride and Prejudice is my feelgood movie
Gurinder Chadha
The latest in our series of writers highlighting their go-to comfort films is an ode to Gurinder Chadha’s 2004 spin on the Austen classic

We’ve never been short of Jane Austen film adaptations. In fact, it seems a new one arrives every decade – two were announced recently, including Netflix’s spin on Pride & Prejudice. Yet, one adaptation has been shamefully overlooked: Gurinder Chadha’s Bride & Prejudice.

A cross-cultural, British-and-Bollywood-meets-Hollywood take on Austen’s most famous novel, the film is pure joy – a riot of original musical numbers, colourful costumes, chaos, culture clashes and, of course, romance.

Image
While the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie franchise is massively successful and loved by filmgoers all over the world, it also has its detractors. Indeed, every entry with the exception of the first installment, 2003's "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," has drawn mixed to poor reviews from critics, which might have affected the way some folks view the actors associated with Disney's seafaring fantasy adventures.

With the films being on the receiving end of so much criticism, some of the actors who've appeared in them have mixed feelings about the movies as well. Keira Knightley -- who plays Elizabeth Swann in four of the five...

As we tend to familiarize actors with their on-screen characters, it’s surprising that some have publicly expressed dislike for the roles that made them famous. Despite the iconic status of these characters, actors like these sometimes reveal that they hated portraying them.

Matthew Macfadyen, famous for his role as Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice opposite Keira Knightley, once shared that he did not really enjoy playing the role. “There were moments I had a good time, but I wish I’d enjoyed it more. From Muddy Skirts to Clenched Hands: 20 Years of ‘Pride & Prejudice’ (2005)
Image
These are the times of re-release. One day, you are checking BookMyShow and a film you watched on television, sneaking away as a young girl, returns. It does not have to be great or even good—you hope to go to the theatre and remember what it felt like before, or if you like it at all now. They are like former lovers: familiar, complicated, demanding we remember who we used to be. The studios call it nostalgia. The accountants call it revenue. I call it the failure of the present tense.

I had not planned to write about Joe Wright’s 2005 film, “Pride and Prejudice.” Twenty years of critique or discourse on the film seemed sufficient. The arguments had been settled, or they had been abandoned. But something has happened to Jane Austen in the interim. She has become something else entirely. There are hundreds of enthusiasts on Instagram...

Who Is Playing Mr. Wickham in Netflix’s Pride & Prejudice? Meet Louis Partridge and the Full Bennet Family Cast
Image
Mr. Wickham is back, and this time it’s actor Louis Partridge who’s going to play the role in the upcoming Pride & Prejudice Netflix series. Here, we’d see the Enola Holmes actor slip into the role of Jane Austen‘s smoothest antagonist, setting the stage for more drama and, of course, chaos.

Along with Partridge, we also have Emma Corrin taking on the role of Elizabeth Bennet, with actor Jack Lowden playing Mr. Darcy. Olivia Colman appears as Mrs. Bennet, and Rufus Sewell portrays Mr. Bennet. The roles of the Bennet sisters are going to be played by Freya Mavor as Jane and Rhea Norwood as Lydia. While Kitty and Mary are brought to life by newcomers Hollie Avery and Hopey Parish.

The six-part series definitely looks like it has the classic Austen vibe with a modern twist. And who else to do justice to that than Partridge,...

Yellowstone follows “the Dutton family, led by John Dutton (Kevin Costner), who controls the largest contiguous ranch in the United States. The ranch is under constant attack by those it borders—land developers, an Indian reservation, and United States of America’s first National Park.”

Finn Little debuted in Yellowstone’s fourth season. He is a troubled teen who meets Beth at the hospital where her ailing father receives care. Carter...

‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’ Review – Brings Scares and Action to a Near-extinct Franchise
Image
Just three years after the Jurassic World trilogy went out on a low point with Dominion, the franchise has been revived with Rebirth, introducing a brand new set of characters and a promise from the filmmaker to take things back to their scarier beginnings. Set five years after the events of 2022’s Jurassic World: Dominion, covert operations expert Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) is contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic materials from the worlds three biggest dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades. Jurassic World: Rebirth boasts tremendous set pieces and a simple yet effective storyline, with dinosaurs that are scarier than they’ve been within this franchise for quite some time.

The 15 Best Jane Austen Movies, Ranked
Image
Jane Austen needs no introduction. She's the original rom-com queen, writing novels in Regency-era England that gently satirized class and gender roles while also giving her readers classic romances between characters who have stood the test of time. So when it comes to novelists whose work has been adapted for the screen on a fairly regular basis, Jane Austen is right up there with Stephen King.

Year after year, we get different Jane Austen interpretations of her most popular novels, some placed within an appropriately period setting, others given a modern-day update. But no matter when they take place, they've all got that special something that allowed Jane Austen to stand the test of time: relatable heroines and their lovable but occasionally toxic love interests.

Although there have been some truly excellent Jane Austen miniseries adaptations, for the purposes of this piece, we're focusing on the film versions of her work.

Everyone Wants Their Own Jane Austen Adaptation, and They’re Getting Them
Image
It’s the year 2025 and we are blessed with not one, and dare we say not even two, but three new Jane Austen adaptations. Ms. Austen herself turns 250 years old this year, and it’s not a moment too soon to celebrate the life and works of the iconic author.

Now, exactly two decades after Joe Wright’s “Pride & Prejudice” made cinematic history with the Darcy (Mathew Macfadyen) hand flex seen ’round the world, there are a number of modern adaptations in the works, not to mention other recent works inspired by her life and most beloved novels, from the film “Jane Austen Wrecked My Life” to the series “Miss Austen.”

And “Pride & Prejudice” is hardly the only Austen book getting new life in two (!!) formats, as Austen seems to suddenly be everywhere, all over again. Ahead, we break down the upcoming adaptations, and provide some guidance on...

21 Years After Flopping, Keira Knightley's Underrated Fantasy Film Is Heading to a New Streaming Home
Image
Keira Knightley made her debut in the early 2000s, where she had a series of iconic roles. Whether it was her brief but cult classic-worthy appearance in Love Actually, her badass role in Pirates of the Caribbean, or the iconic Elizabeth Bennett in Pride & Prejudice, Knightley owned the 2000s.

Just before she played Elizabeth to perfection in almost everyone's favorite version of the Jane Austen novel, she played another iconic character: Guinevere. Knightley starred in the highly underrated historical fantasy King Arthur in 2004, a film that didn't live up to her usual success. However, 21 years later, King Arthur has a new chance to be discovered by a new generation as it's officially heading to Hulu on July 1, per When to Stream.

King Arthur reimagined the legendary hero as a Roman officer instead of the typical medieval knight. The producers attempted to sell the film as a more historically accurate...

You’ll Never Guess What the ‘Pride & Prejudice’ Cast Did For Its Most Iconic Scene
Image
In order to get the perfect shot in a movie, that sometimes means waking up at dawn, or worse, before dawn. The cast in the scene, the crew involved to prep, the director, everyone up when the last thing people are thinking of is being conscious. In the 2005 adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, Pride & Prejudice, one of the most iconic scenes was filmed at, you guessed it, the crack of dawn. It's the scene where Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen) confesses his love to Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) as the morning sun rises. Macfadyen's Darcy utters the swoon-worthy iconic words, "You have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love... I love... I love you."

Despite the intimacy of the one-on-one scene between Lizzie Bennet and Mr. Darcy, in actuality, in addition to of course, the crew, Knightley and Macfadyen weren't as long as the scene would suggest. In a recent Variety's Actors on Actors,...

Keira Knightley Praises Late ‘Pride & Prejudice’ Co-Star Donald Sutherland: ‘Most Actors Have Been a Disappointment Since’
Image
Keira Knightley and Rosamund Pike sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss the 20th anniversary of the beloved adaptation of “Pride & Prejudice,” which has become the definitive version of the oft-filmed story for many a Jane Austen fan. Knightley and Pike played sisters Elizabeth and Jane Bennett, with their cinematic patriarch portrayed by the legendary Donald Sutherland.

“I have to say, most actors have been a disappointment since then,” said Knightley, who was just 19 when she starred in the film. The actress netted her first Oscar nomination for her work.

“Donald was pretty legendary,” Pike added. “We did have dinners with him sometimes, and he told us some pretty wild stories which cannot be shared.”

Sutherland, Knightley noted, was vehemently anti-smoking, a quality his castmates did note share.

“There was the party that Donald Sutherland came to. You weren’t allowed to smoke. He had it in his contract...

"I Was Seen As A Terrible Actress": Keira Knightley Reflects On Public Reaction After Pirates Of The Caribbean
Image
Keira Knightley is now known as one of the most respected and acclaimed actors around but there was a time when she received very negative reviews for her biggest role. Knightley first broke out with 2002's Bend It Like Beckham, but it wasn't until the following year's release of Gore Verbinski's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl that she became more of a household name, especially once that franchise became a massive blockbuster success.

Unfortunately, while there was a lot of praise lobbied at the film, including an Oscar nomination for Johnny Depp, reviews about Knightley's performance were far less kind. These reviews about her acting were also rather confusing because while the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was booming, she received widespread acclaim for another major role in Pride & Prejudice. Recently, Knightley spoke about these mixed reactions.

“If it’s not broken, don’t fix it”: Pride & Prejudice Movie Screenwriter Refused to Change One Thing in the Jane Austen Classic
Image
When Pride & Prejudice hit theatres in 2005, it felt like a fresh breeze through a timeless take. Starring actress Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, the movie brought Jane Austen’s beloved characters to life with rich visuals and a modern energy that somehow didn’t lose the vibe of the original.

And all of this was only possible because of screenwriter Deborah Moggach. While many expected a reinvented Jane Austen story to suit contemporary taste, Moggach had something else in mind. Let’s dive deeper!

Deborah Moggach believed Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice story was already perfect

Pride & Prejudice completely transformed cinema when it was released in 2005. Based on the work of Jane Austen, it captivated everyone from the get-go. It was definitely a masterpiece, and when screenwriter Deborah Moggach was asked to write the screenplay, she did everything in her power not to mess with the original.
