The 40-Year-Old Virgin at 20: Judd Apatow Confirms Director’s Cut Featuring Donald Trump’s Biggest Downfall
Image
Judd Apatow has weighed in on the director’s cut for his directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the revered comedy that turns 20 this year (via The Hollywood Reporter). As opposed to the theatrical version, the director’s cut comprises 17 minutes of sequences that Apatow personally liked, including a brief cameo from Adult movie star Stormy Daniels, who appears in Steve Carell‘s fantasy.

Within that, there was a whole sequence with Stormy Daniels [who appears in an adult film] talking to Steve in one of his fantasies. That’s how we first met Stormy Daniels. And there was a moment where he was trying to watch p-rnography, but he kept fast forwarding to the talking parts.

Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Judd Apatow looks back on the controversy & cutting room floor of The 40-Year-Old Virgin for the comedy’s 20th anniversary
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
2005 was a hell of a year at the cinema. It was the year Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins kicked off one of Hollywood’s greatest superhero trilogies, Lucasfilm used the Force to divide fans with Revenge of the Sith, and Judd Apatow made his feature directorial debut with the laugh-out-loud crude comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It pains me to say this, but that was 20 years ago. While staring Grandfather Time in his decaying face, it’s time to look back on the film that made Apatow one of the biggest names in comedy, and all the questionable decisions leading to its release.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the film’s 20th anniversary,...

‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ Turns 20: Judd Apatow on Controversial Scenes and the Studio Shutting Down Production
Image
Twenty years after its release, The 40-Year-Old Virgin continues to haunt fans’ dreams.

Universal released the comedy feature in theaters Aug. 19, 2005, and the film collected $177 million at the global box office ($293 million today). Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco and Seth Rogen star in the movie centering on Andy (Carell), an employee at an electronics store who agrees that it’s time to lose his virginity.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Apatow — who marked his feature directorial debut with the project — discussed the studio having major concerns after a few days of shooting, the Stormy Daniels footage that landed on the cutting room floor, his tough feedback for Kevin Hart and whether the movie could still get made today.

Judd Apatow Playfully Sasses Back at Mean Reviews of ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ | Video
Image
It’s been 20 years since Judd Apatow’s “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” hit screens, and to celebrate, the director clapped back at some harsh reviews of the comedy. Don’t worry though, he thinks some of them are pretty funny.

In a new video released on Wednesday morning, Apatow sat down with Letterboxd, an app that allows movie fans to track, review and discuss their favorite films. The app has skyrocketed in recent years, earning fame for traumatizing actors and filmmakers by forcing them to choose their four favorite films.

This time, the outlet presented Apatow with reviews of the comedy starring Steve Carell. One came from a user named Valerie, who gave the film just one and a half stars, saying the only funny part was when a clip from “Everybody Loves Raymond” was used.

“That’s just vicious,” Apatow retorted. “So you watch the whole movie, you only liked...

‘Awards Chatter’ Pod: Seth Rogen on ‘The Studio’ and How It Was Shaped by ‘Freaks and Geeks,’ ‘Superbad,’ ‘The Green Hornet’ and the Sony Hack
Image
“My career is not one steeped with awards attention,” notes Seth Rogen, chuckling in his inimitable way, on the latest episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast. “I’ve accepted that, and that’s become fine with me. So it is nice and sort of novel that, after working for this long, something new and exciting can happen.”

The Canadian actor, writer, producer and director is referring to the TV Academy’s tremendous embrace of the The Studio, the Apple TV+ comedy series about a present-day Hollywood studio chief that he co-created, co-wrote, co-directed and stars in. Last month, the show received 23 Emmy nominations — breaking Ted Lasso’s record for most noms for a rookie comedy and tying the second season of The Bear’s record for most noms for any season of a comedy — including acting, writing, producing and directing noms for Rogen himself. He emphasizes, “We’re very thrilled about it.

A smash hit Seth Rogen comedy is becoming a streaming hit on yet another platform. Rogen is an actor, writer, director, and producer who is best known for his work in the comedy genre, after having broken out in a string of Judd Apatow comedies, including The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up.

Altogether, Seth Rogen movies have cumulatively grossed more than $9.5 billion, thanks to multiple solid hits, including Kung Fu Panda ($632.2 million), Neighbors ($270.9 million), Superbad ($169.9 million), and Pineapple Express ($102.4 million).

However, only two of Seth Rogen's movies have earned more than $1 billion. One is the live-action remake The Lion King ($1.66 billion), and the other is a popular title that is currently surging on streaming once again.

Judd Apatow Reveals How Steve Carell's 'Anchorman' Role Inspired 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'
Image
Judd Apatow is looking back on how Steve Carell‘s hilarious turn in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy helped launch one of his biggest movies.

During an appearance on The Lamorning After Podcast, the comedy filmmaker revealed that Steve’s scene-stealing work as Brick Tamland directly inspired The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

“Carell was so funny that it was blowing everyone’s mind,” he said.

“It was this thing where everyone was killing it, but people were especially shocked at how riotous Steve was being all day with these crazy improvs. And it was just something magical happening with Carell doing Brick.”

Keep reading to find out more…

At the time, Judd was known for spotting and elevating rising talent, like Jason Segel in Knocked Up before Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and Seth Rogen in The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

Steve Carell’s Wildest Movie Twist Dethroned Ace Ventura in One Scene Flat
Image
Steve Carell’s Crazy, Stupid, Love was a wild movie that flat-out destroyed Jim Carrey’s Ace Ventura: Pet Detective in one iconic confrontational scene during the climax of the film. Although both movies were great in their own way, the plot twists in both movies were quite wild.

However, Steve Carell‘s Crazy, Stupid, Love wins since the chaotic finale of the movie was just too impressive not to remember. When Cal Weaver (Steve Carell) reaches Hannah’s place (Emma Stone), Ryan Gosling emerges from her house, and it is revealed that he is her boyfriend.

No plot twist will ever be as funny as the one in Crazy, Stupid, Love

Why Did Steve Carell Yell Kelly Clarkson in The 40-Year-Old Virgin in the Waxing Scene?
Image
When you first watched Steve Carell’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin did you ever imagine a namedrop appearing for Kelly Clarkson? Turns out, in the 2005 comedy during a real-life chest waxing scene, that later became a part of pop culture, Carell’s character, Andy screamed the pop star’s name.

In the particular scene, Andy gets his chest waxed for the very first time leaving audiences in stitches over his painful, loud screams, and random words flying out of his mouth. During that sequence, Steve Carell’s one scream becomes a standout moment where he shouts out “Kelly Clarkson”.

Yes, in the middle of all that pain, he yelled the name of the famous American Idol winner. But why? Well, turns out this hilarious shout wasn’t planned by Steve Carell himself. It was actually written down by none other than actor Seth Rogen. Eventually, the line became so iconic that even Kelly Clarkson addressed it.

For Akiva Schaffer and His New ‘Naked Gun,’ Resurrecting the Theatrical Comedy Is No Joke
Image
In a phony public service announcement that ran in theaters before certain movies, Liam Neeson, star of the new “The Naked Gun,” addressed a concern that he cares deeply about: the plight of big screen comedies.

In a tone not dissimilar from Sarah McLachlan pleading for donations for abandoned animals, Neeson gravely said, “Every passing year, more comedies go unmade, unseen and unquoted.” Over a montage of clips from successful Paramount comedies, Neeson continued: “And for the price of one movie ticket, you can help rescue a comedy and in the process share a smile, a laugh and even the occasional groan with the people in your very own community. Right now there’s a comedy movie that needs you. Please, buy a ticket right now.”

The PSA was a joke, of course. But the dilemma is very real.

Over the course of the past few years, the big screen...

Steve Carell’s Serial Killer Look Shut Down His Best Movie That’s Returning to Theaters
Image
Steve Carell’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin is arguably one of his best movies to have ever been released in theaters. Universal Studios almost shut down this comedic gem from 2005 because of Carell’s looks (which he has no control over).

After buying the rights from director Judd Apatow (who was making his directorial debut), Universal Studios shut down the production of The 40-Year-Old Virgin just one week into development due to some serious concerns regarding Steve Carell‘s character (via The Esquire).

[The higher-ups thought] the dailies of my character just looked too creepy. They said I looked like a serial killer.

Now that I see it that way, I do agree with Universal Studios. If you remove the comedy from The 40-Year-Old Virgin and add a mysterious soundtrack, Steve Carell’s character does look like a serial killer.

However, the studios had nothing to be concerned about since Carell’s movie turned out to be a masterpiece,...

Get ready to awkwardly laugh all over again! It’s been two decades since The 40-Year-Old Virgin first burst onto screens. The film launched a thousand quotable lines and cemented its place as a comedy classic. In honor of its 20th anniversary, Universal Pictures invites fans to celebrate the hilarity, heart, and unforgettable awkwardness that defined an era of comedy.

The Comedy That Launched Stars

The 2005 movie The 40-Year-Old Virgin made a comedy star out of Steve Carell and confirmed Judd Apatow as a comedy hitmaker, and 20 years later, Universal is releasing a new 4K Ultra HD disc to celebrate the film’s legacy. In addition, the film is returning to theaters from August 22nd to 28th, along with Apatow’s Trainwreck, as the Amy Schumer-starring comedy reaches its 10th anniversary.

In The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Carell played an electronics store employee who, as the title reveals, hasn’t had a very active sex life during his four decades on the planet. But, with some help from his co-workers/friends — an incredible ensemble including Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco, and Jane Lynch — as well as the very patient Gilf Trish (Catherine Keener), he’s able to make some big changes.

Steve Carell’s 85% Rated Movie Saved The Greatest Sitcom that Almost Got Canceled
Image
The 40-Year-Old Virgin didn’t just launch Steve Carell into mainstream, but it also saved The Office from getting cancelled after just six episodes. That’s right! One of TV’s greatest sitcoms almost did not survive its first season, and it took a summer blockbuster, with an 85% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and a bold gamble to keep it alive.

The show premiered in 2005 and featured Greg Daniels’ American take on the UK mockumentary, originally created by Ricky Gervais. Early ratings were lukewarm, and NBC reportedly considered ending The Office. But then it became a cultural juggernaut, with its mix of perfect characters, great writing, and a second wave of popularity after hitting Netflix in 2011.

One Awful Subgenre Completely Dominates IMDb's Worst Movies List
Image
The list of the IMDb's 250 top-rated films is an interesting peek into the minds of IMDb users. The people who log onto IMDb to give ratings seem to be, collectively, very fond of movies about criminals, prisoners, or war. There is also a heavy violent-fantasy contingent. Almost all the films on the list are about men, masculinity, and male concerns. The ten highest-rated films on the top-250 list include titles like "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Godfather," "The Lord of the Rings," "Pulp Fiction," and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Of course, the 100 worst-rated films on IMDb is more of a mixed bag. Great films tend to be the movies that many audience members and critics agree are great. Bad films tend to be individually uncovered discoveries, oddball outliers that no one wants to talk about. Classics bring communities together. Bad films feel deeply personal.

Films can be bad for many,...

The Filthiest Movie Of 2025 Is An Animated Netflix Release – And The Trailer Is Here
Image
Genndy Tartakovsky is an absolute legend of animation. He helped usher a new era of animated creativity on TV during the dawn of Cartoon Network with "Dexter's Laboratory" before going on to redefine all-ages animation yet again with the cartoon masterpiece that is "Samurai Jack." And while Tartakovsky's big-screen efforts have been pretty much aimed at kids up to this point, specifically with the "Hotel Transylvania" movies, he's finally returning with his first feature film in seven years ... one that's less "Dexter's Laboratory" and more "The 40-Year-Old Virgin."

Tartakovsky's "Fixed" has a very simple premise: A dog learns he's getting neutered the next day, so he decides to enjoy one last wild night out on the town with his best buds to let his testicles party before they depart. Yes, this is an animated movie about dog balls — and it is gloriously animated in 2D.

The first trailer for the film is here,...

How Rainn Wilson Really Felt When Steve Carrell Left The Office
Image
One of the most recognizable stars of the century has shared his real feelings about one of the momentous moments in modern TV history.

This year, the most popular American sitcom of the 2000s celebrated its 20th anniversary. While the original British version of certainly made a significant impact in the comedy landscape, the American adaptation has more than usurped it in terms of its ubiquity and recognizability in the popular culture zeitgeist, much of which is due to the series' ensemble cast. During what is widely considered its golden era, the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company was led by its regional manager, Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Although the character began the series with a more abrasive, odious demeanor, Michael was rewritten to be more likable, while keeping many of his eccentricities. Even with some of his bizarre methods of leadership, Michael became one of the...

The Matt Damon HBO Movie That's Considered One Of The Best Of The 21st Century

After collecting ballots from prominent film lovers from around the globe, the New York Times released what they're declaratively calling "The 100 Best Movies from the 21st Century," awarding the top spot to Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" with David Lynch's magnum opus "Mulholland Drive" in second place.

As entertaining as it is to pore over this "definitive" list, the real fun comes from poring over the individual ballots that participants have sent in. They give us an illuminating look at a filmmaker or actor's particular taste, like how Julianne Moore thinks "Superbad" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" are some of the best films of the century (which they are).

These individual ballots also give us a chance to appreciate other smaller movies that didn't make the cut, like how Flight of the Conchords and "What We Do in the Shadows" star Jemaine Clement's list spotlights the excellent Iranian vampire movie...

From Pedro Almodóvar to "West Side Story" and "Snow White" star Rachel Zegler, the Times asked dozens upon dozens of famous people about their favorite feature films released since the year 2000 and then compiled their responses into a Top 100 list (ranked by which movies got the most votes). The poll was very similar to the polls that Sight & Sound holds once every decade, only limited to releases from the last 25 years and inviting a different team of filmmakers, writers, and executives to participate. (Sight & Sound also invites critics and essayists.)

As of this writing, one can see many of the Top 10 lists submitted by the participants, and, boy howdy, are some of the choices interesting. Alex Winter, the star of the "Bill & Ted" films and director of "Freaked,...

Mel Brooks loves ‘Hidden Figures’?! Julianne Moore’s a ‘Superbad’ fan?! Stars reveal their most surprising Nyt movie picks
Image
When The New York Times recently dropped its list of the 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, it didn’t just spark film buff debates — it also gave readers a peek into which movies actors, directors, and creatives listed as their favorites. And let’s just say, the results are full of surprises.

Who would’ve guessed that comedy legend Mel Brooks — the mind behind Blazing Saddles and The Producers — is a major fan of Hidden Figures? His top 10 also includes Jojo Rabbit, A Beautiful Mind and The Bourne Identity.

Then there’s horror king Stephen King, who proved he has a soft side with Brokeback Mountain on his list, alongside more intense films such as Black Hawk Down, Million Dollar Baby, and Oppenheimer.

When Oscar winner Julianne Moore needs a laugh, it appears she turns to comedies Superbad and The 40 Year-Old Virgin. Rounding out her list was also stylish dramas like Black Swan,...

Image
The New York Times is determined to find the Top 100 Films of the 21st Century as voted by the public. It’s open on their website (with a paywall), but even famous actors and filmmakers in the movie business are getting in on the action. According to the Borrowing Tape page on Facebook, “The poll includes ‘more than 500 influential directors, actors and other notable names in Hollywood and around the world voted on the best films released since Jan. 1, 2000.'” They have shared the lists that were compiled by Bong Joon Ho, Sofia Coppola, Julianne Moore, Mel Brooks, Mikey Madison, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ava DuVernay.

Bong Joon Ho, whose Mickey 17 was released earlier this year, submitted his picks for the Top 9 Films of the 21st Century. His list includes films like Asako, No Country for Old Men, Lazzaro Felice, Mad Max: Fury Road, Stranger by the Lake, The Day He Arrives,...

The Best Non-‘Daily Show’ Comedic Performances by ‘Daily Show’ Anchors and Correspondents
Image
“Theracide,” the first of this week’s two episodes of Adults to air* on FX, explores typically challenging territory for the show’s questionably adult characters. Samir (Malik Elassal) and Paul Baker (Jack Innanen) get too attached to a group of high schoolers who’ve convinced gig worker Samir to deliver them beer. Billie (Lucy Freyer) gets way too nervous meeting her older boyfriend’s adult friends and tries to overcompensate with bawdy jokes.

Anton (Owen Thiele) and Issa (Amita Rao) have the most grown-up problem, which they attempt to resolve by the most childish means: George, their mutual therapist, has suddenly died, and to determine whether their nonsense drove him to suicide, Issa hires a medium. Anton is right to doubt that Taryn is on the level, not only because she’s claiming she can communicate with the dead but because she’s doing so with a Ouija board...

Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Fixed’ Is a Miracle | Annecy Review
Image
Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Fixed” shouldn’t exist.

It’s a traditionally animated, R-rated sex comedy about a dog who, on the eve of getting snipped, embarks on an unhinged odyssey in the big city. The best way to describe it is probably Spike Lee’s “25th Hour” mixed with Disney’s “Lady and the Tramp.”

For a while, it seemed like nobody would actually get to see “Fixed.”

It was a long-held passion project for Tartakovsky, whose “Hotel Transylvania” films have made more than $1 billion for Sony. He wanted to do something radically different and, after years of prodding and pitching, Sony finally let him off the leash. The film was conceived as a co-production between Sony (who would make the movie) and New Line Cinema (who would distribute it), but after the movie was finished, New Line Cinema backed out, sending the movie back to Sony who then had...

A Major Jack Black And Ben Stiller Flop Opened On The Same Day As Mean Girls
Image
What do you get when you pair two beloved comedic actors with the Academy Award-winning director of "Rain Man"? One of the worst flops of the early-2000s, apparently. Dark comedy "Envy" debuted in 2004 and proved to be a critical and commercial disaster, despite an all-star cast and an ostensibly capable filmmaker at the helm (though we are also talking about the director who oversaw muted mob drama "The Alto Knights").

Directed by Barry Levinson, "Envy" starred Ben Stiller and Jack Black as best friends Tim Dingman and Nick Vanderpark. After Nick invents a spray that he claims can vaporize dog poop, Tim declines to invest and support his pal, but he soon regrets his decision when Nick becomes incredibly rich of the back of his harebrained scheme. The tension between the two reaches a fever pitch, which is when none other than Christopher Walken shows up in the role of J-Man,...

'Dodgeball 2' Gets Gigantic Update From Vince Vaughn Over 20 Years After Release
Image
Thank you, Chuck Norris! After 21 years, it might finally be time for Dodgeball 2 to hit the court for the next American Dodgeball Association of America championship. Peter Lafleur himself, Vince Vaughn, appears ready to lead Average Joe's Gym to another championship, as the actor recently gave Dodgeball 2 its biggest update yet. Released in 2004, Dodgeball, also starring Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor, is widely considered to be one of the best comedies of that decade, up there with Superbad, Anchorman, and Tropic Thunder. Fans have desperately awaited good news surrounding the long-gestating sequel, and it seems as though it might finally happen.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote his new Netflix movie, Nonnas, Vince Vaughn revealed that he still knows the 5 D's of dodgeball. "There’s always talk of these," Vaughn said of the prospect of sequels to many of his beloved comedies. The actor...

Seth Rogen Walked So Ryan Reynolds Could Run After He Revolutionized Hollywood 20 Years Ago
Image
If you’ve cried laughing at Deadpool dropping F-bombs mid-fight while talking about love, you don’t just have Ryan Reynolds to thank, but also Seth Rogen. And no, he’s not directly linked to the superhero movie, but if you rewind the clock 20 years, you’ll see how he influenced the flick.

Rogen was a part of a wild little movie that reshaped the comedy landscape of Hollywood, and it’s titled The 40-Year-Old-Virgin, which dared to be tender, filthy, and full of R-rated jokes, with a genuine emotional arc. Now, two decades later, Reynolds and several others are riding the wave, but let’s look at how it all first started.

Paul Rudd Almost Lost His 'Clueless' Role Over a Haircut
Image
One of Paul Rudd's most memorable movie roles nearly didn't happen. On the latest episode of Good Hang with Amy Poehler, the actor recalled his audition for Amy Heckerling's Clueless, where he was asked to read for the part of Josh Lucas, and how a spontaneous decision could have cost him his big break. After the audition, Rudd dramatically changed his appearance by chopping his long locks down to a buzz cut, which came as a shock to the director, who was considering offering him the role before seeing the haircut. Ugh! As if!

"I wasn't thinking about it, [and] I was walking past a barbershop and I went in and said, 'Just buzz my head,'" Rudd revealed. "A week later, I went into a restaurant and Amy Heckerling, who directed the movie, was eating there. She looked at me and froze, and she goes, 'What did you do?...

12 Directors Who Cast Their Family Members In Their Movies
Image
Nepo babies seem to be all the rage in Hollywood right now. You can't swing a stick in this town without hitting someone whose parent is a casting director able to pull some strings to get them a recurring role on a sitcom. Many actors are nepo babies that the general public may be completely unaware of, like Daisy Edgar-Jones having a mother who's a film editor and a father who's an executive for a multimedia company.

It's unclear how much pull the likes of editors, costumers, and set designers have when it comes to getting their family members work in the industry. However, when you're related to a famous director, things suddenly fall into place much more easily. Directors often collaborate closely with the casting department to ensure actors fulfill their visions, and if they feel like it, they can totally give a loved one a part. It may be a small cameo,...

From Elvis to Saul Goodman? Stars Who Nearly Replaced Steve Carell In The Office!

Actors Who Almost Played Michael Scott in The Office(Photo Credit –Facebook)

Before Steve Carell became the face of The Office as Michael Scott, the role was hotly contested by a slew of actors. Imagine anyone other than Carell delivering classic “That’s what she said” lines or awkwardly steering his staff through cringeworthy team-building exercises. Well, that almost happened! The Dunder Mifflin boss wasn’t always destined to be Carell’s signature character.

In fact, The Office’s producers had a whole lineup of actors in mind for the role before Carell’s comedic genius won them over. But it wasn’t just about his talent, it was his performance in The 40-Year-Old Virgin that convinced NBC to keep the show alive, giving Carell the chance to shine as the most lovable (and painfully embarrassing) boss on TV. So, who else could’ve been Michael Scott? Let’s dive in!
