Judd Apatow has weighed in on the director’s cut for his directorial debut, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the revered comedy that turns 20 this year (via The Hollywood Reporter). As opposed to the theatrical version, the director’s cut comprises 17 minutes of sequences that Apatow personally liked, including a brief cameo from Adult movie star Stormy Daniels, who appears in Steve Carell‘s fantasy.

Within that, there was a whole sequence with Stormy Daniels [who appears in an adult film] talking to Steve in one of his fantasies. That’s how we first met Stormy Daniels. And there was a moment where he was trying to watch p-rnography, but he kept fast forwarding to the talking parts.

2005 was a hell of a year at the cinema. It was the year Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins kicked off one of Hollywood’s greatest superhero trilogies, Lucasfilm used the Force to divide fans with Revenge of the Sith, and Judd Apatow made his feature directorial debut with the laugh-out-loud crude comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It pains me to say this, but that was 20 years ago. While staring Grandfather Time in his decaying face, it’s time to look back on the film that made Apatow one of the biggest names in comedy, and all the questionable decisions leading to its release.

Twenty years after its release, The 40-Year-Old Virgin continues to haunt fans’ dreams.

Universal released the comedy feature in theaters Aug. 19, 2005, and the film collected $177 million at the global box office ($293 million today). Steve Carell, Catherine Keener, Paul Rudd, Romany Malco and Seth Rogen star in the movie centering on Andy (Carell), an employee at an electronics store who agrees that it’s time to lose his virginity.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Apatow — who marked his feature directorial debut with the project — discussed the studio having major concerns after a few days of shooting, the Stormy Daniels footage that landed on the cutting room floor, his tough feedback for Kevin Hart and whether the movie could still get made today.

It’s been 20 years since Judd Apatow’s “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” hit screens, and to celebrate, the director clapped back at some harsh reviews of the comedy. Don’t worry though, he thinks some of them are pretty funny.

In a new video released on Wednesday morning, Apatow sat down with Letterboxd, an app that allows movie fans to track, review and discuss their favorite films. The app has skyrocketed in recent years, earning fame for traumatizing actors and filmmakers by forcing them to choose their four favorite films.

This time, the outlet presented Apatow with reviews of the comedy starring Steve Carell. One came from a user named Valerie, who gave the film just one and a half stars, saying the only funny part was when a clip from “Everybody Loves Raymond” was used.

Altogether, Seth Rogen movies have cumulatively grossed more than $9.5 billion, thanks to multiple solid hits, including Kung Fu Panda ($632.2 million), Neighbors ($270.9 million), Superbad ($169.9 million), and Pineapple Express ($102.4 million).

Judd Apatow is looking back on how Steve Carell‘s hilarious turn in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy helped launch one of his biggest movies.

During an appearance on The Lamorning After Podcast, the comedy filmmaker revealed that Steve’s scene-stealing work as Brick Tamland directly inspired The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

“Carell was so funny that it was blowing everyone’s mind,” he said.

“It was this thing where everyone was killing it, but people were especially shocked at how riotous Steve was being all day with these crazy improvs. And it was just something magical happening with Carell doing Brick.”

When you first watched Steve Carell’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin did you ever imagine a namedrop appearing for Kelly Clarkson? Turns out, in the 2005 comedy during a real-life chest waxing scene, that later became a part of pop culture, Carell’s character, Andy screamed the pop star’s name.

In the particular scene, Andy gets his chest waxed for the very first time leaving audiences in stitches over his painful, loud screams, and random words flying out of his mouth. During that sequence, Steve Carell’s one scream becomes a standout moment where he shouts out “Kelly Clarkson”.

Yes, in the middle of all that pain, he yelled the name of the famous American Idol winner. But why? Well, turns out this hilarious shout wasn’t planned by Steve Carell himself. It was actually written down by none other than actor Seth Rogen. Eventually, the line became so iconic that even Kelly Clarkson addressed it.

In a phony public service announcement that ran in theaters before certain movies, Liam Neeson, star of the new “The Naked Gun,” addressed a concern that he cares deeply about: the plight of big screen comedies.

Lionsgate recently shared a couple of trailers for Good Fortune, but has now released character posters and the official one-sheet. Aziz Ansari stars in the film and it marks his directorial debut. Ansari also wrote the script and joining him in the cast are Reeves, Seth Rogen, Keke Palmer and Sandra Oh. Anthony Katagas, Alan Yang, and Ansari produce, with Brady Fujikawa and Jon Humphrey overseeing at Lionsgate. Lionsgate has just shared the first trailer for Good Fortune, which stars Aziz Ansari and marks his directorial debut with this film after his formerly planned debut with Bill Murray, Being Mortal, was shut down halfway through. Judd Apatow is breaking ground as the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures‘ first-ever guest curator for its upcoming comedy film exhibition.

Set to debut in April 2027, the museum announced the series on Friday as the writer, director and producer participated in a 20th anniversary screening of his feature directorial debut The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) with the movie’s cast.

“The cat is out of the bag! I’ll be working with the Academy Museum to showcase some of my favorite films and filmmakers throughout the ages,” said Apatow in a statement. “I am honored to curate this project alongside the museum’s talented team and with access to the Academy Collection. We hope to leave visitors inspired and, of course, with a big smile on their faces.”

The untitled exhibition will be the Academy Museum’s first dedicated to the art of comedy in film, utilizing some of the 52 million items in the Academy Collection.

Despite acting in titles like Everybody Wants Some and Scream Queens for years, Glen Powell has experienced a surge in wider popularity of late thanks to roles in movies like Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone but You, Hit Man, and Twisters.
