‘Caught Stealing’ Director Darren Aronofsky Is Tackling His Most Commercial Project Yet
Image
Inside filmmaker Darren Aronofsky there are two wolves.

One wolf yearns to make mainstream entertainment that is accepted by the critical establishment and the moviegoing masses. The other wolf is more fussy, more artsy, able to turn even the most commercial concept into something idiosyncratic, offbeat and, occasionally, downright alienating. It’s the tug-of-war between these two wolves that makes him such an exciting filmmaker. You can see them tussling right before your eyes.

“The Whale” in 2022 chronicled a morbidly obese man eating himself to death, but was a sleeper hit (making nearly $60 million on a budget of just $3 million) and won Brendan Fraser an Oscar. In 2014 “Noah” was a...

Oscar-nominated actor Liam Neeson is still fresh from his critically acclaimed performance in the action-comedy film The Naked Gun, a legacy sequel to the iconic Naked Gun trilogy. Before starring in a string of action films following the 2008 blockbuster Taken, he played a key role in Christopher Nolan’s superhero venture Batman Begins (2005).

Superman Or Batman – Whose Movies Have Made More At The Box Office
Image
From Man of Steel To The Dark Knight: Who Wins The Superman vs Batman Box Office Battle? ( Photo Credit – Facebook )

For decades, Superman and Batman have stood as the crown jewels of DC’s mythology. One represents hope, the other vengeance. One is an alien god among men, the other a human who built himself into a legend. But beyond the comic panels and the big screen rivalries, fans often ask a simpler question: which hero has made more money at the movies?

The debate is closer than casual audiences may think. While Superman pioneered the superhero blockbuster back in 1978, Batman’s darker, grittier tones helped redefine the genre in the 2000s.

Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
Judd Apatow looks back on the controversy & cutting room floor of The 40-Year-Old Virgin for the comedy’s 20th anniversary
Christopher Nolan at an event for Inception (2010)
2005 was a hell of a year at the cinema. It was the year Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins kicked off one of Hollywood’s greatest superhero trilogies, Lucasfilm used the Force to divide fans with Revenge of the Sith, and Judd Apatow made his feature directorial debut with the laugh-out-loud crude comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It pains me to say this, but that was 20 years ago. While staring Grandfather Time in his decaying face, it’s time to look back on the film that made Apatow one of the biggest names in comedy, and all the questionable decisions leading to its release.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about the film’s 20th anniversary,...

Darren Aronofsky Says His Unmade, R-Rated Batman Movie "Wasn't Gonna Be Selling Batmobile [Toys]"
Image
Before Christopher Nolan washed the bad taste left by Batman and Robin away with Batman Begins, Darren Aronofsky was attached to helm a much darker, R-rated take on the iconic DC Comics hero.

The script, which Aronofsky co-wrote with Frank Miller, was inspired by Miller's Batman: Year One, but it would have taken some significant liberties with established Batman lore, with Bruce Wayne ending up homeless after his parents' murder, Alfred reimagined as an auto-repair shop owner named "Little Al," and more.

While speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Aronofsky explained that the movie he really wanted to make was The Fountain, but he figured the Batman project...

The 15 Best Action Movie Sequels
Image
It was widely believed for many decades that, with very few exceptions, sequels were always inferior to the original. And to be fair, there was something to that. For most of Hollywood history, sequels were given less time, less money, and less creative attention than their predecessors. Most of them were out to capitalize as quickly and cheaply as possible upon the existing zeitgeist in a cynical attempt to eke out a quick buck.

But times have changed and sequels now, more than ever, often turn out just as good as the original. Or better. Or at least really danged fun. Hollywood is in the sequel business, as much as or more than anything,...

Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
Gary Oldman almost made the cut as Edward Scissorhands but thought the script was too strange
Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
It isn’t easy to think of anyone other than Johnny Depp playing the iconic Tim Burton character Edward Scissorhands. Burton’s delightfully derranged recluse with bladed digits and a knack for trimming topiaries is an integral part of cinema for people within my age range (I’m 44), but did you know that Gary Oldman almost played the raven-haired Lothario? While speaking about his overarching career with The Hollywood Reporter, THR’s Scott Rozborogh asked Oldman about the time he nearly joined the cast of Burton’s 1990 dark fantasy fairytale.

“It would have been in the late ’80s,” Oldman said about when the Scissorhands role was on the table. “I was on Tim Burton’s list for the role of Edward Scissorhands. It was a small list. My agent thought I had a really good chance of getting it. They said to me, “Read the script.” They sent the script over,...

James Gunn’s Superman was released on digital and PVOD on August 15, a month after the film’s theatrical release. Despite it not being a billion-dollar hit, it is still a major success, making fans wonder why the film was coming out so early. Gunn clarifies that it was due to Peacemaker season 2’s release (via Variety).

The film did great at the box office, with its worldwide gross at the time of writing being $586 million (via The Numbers). While not a huge hit like The Dark Knight trilogy or even Man of Steel, Gunn’s Dcu film is not a failure, as it has fared much better than a whole bunch of DC adaptations. Gunn’s Superman has surpassed 15 DC movies that were released since 2000, in terms of box office performance.

Ranking The 5 Best Batman Movies Based On Their IMDb Ratings
Image
Ranking the Best Batman Movies Based on Their IMDb Ratings(Photo Credit –IMDb)

Before Martin Scorsese commented about superhero movies, the world had been divided about them ‘not being real cinema.’ A lot of people agreed with his statements, and a lot actively worked against them to prove him wrong. Regardless of what he said or what the world thought (or still feels) about superhero movies, no one can deny their influence on the film industry. And Gotham’s most considerable, darkest Vigilante is here to defend that status with his life.

Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Trilogy” was ironically a cinematic masterpiece. It was the most significant turning point for superhero movies and a piece that redefined cinema forever. It garnered respect for a genre that was once not considered worthy of being called true cinema. One would expect nothing less from a series surrounding the Caped Crusader’s crusades.

Superman Box-Office Proves a Sad Fact After The Batman Set a Record in Just 18 Days
Image
James Gunn’s brand-new Superman, starring David Corenswet, had a strong start, making $125M in the US during its opening weekend (via Box Office Mojo). But even with all the hype, it couldn’t top Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which set a major box office record of earning over $300M within 18 days of its release (which took Superman 31 days to achieve). This proves a sad fact that Batman might always overpower Superman.

Yep, despite hitting theaters just after the pandemic, The Batman earned $134M in its first weekend (via Box Office Mojo). And then, while Superman managed to bag $581M worldwide in its fifth weekend, The Batman had already reached $772M within much less time. Plus, if we compare the fifth weekend collection, The Batman made $11M, compared to Superman’s $7.8M (via Cosmic Book News)

It sadly seems like the odds are in favor of the Caped Crusader. But...

James Gunn Reveals How His Batman Movie Would Look Like, and Honestly It’s Perfect
Image
As James Gunn broadens the scope of Dcu, he recently shared a preview of his formative plans for the Dark Knight, and it’s as dark and pulpy as one could expect. In a behind-the-scenes video shot on the set of Superman, Gunn reveals his idea for a Batman movie to an intrigued David Corenswet (via DC Film News):

Even with Batman, if I was doing Batman, I’d get into it it like, Batman’s a f**king maniac. So he puts on a f**king scary bat costume and goes out and tries to scare people.

For those upset by this diminishing of the Caped Crusader into an Arkham-worthy lunatic, let it be known that Gunn’s Batman is inspired straight out of the original comics. In the earliest versions after Batman’s debut in Detective Comics #27 (1939), the billionaire vigilante was an amalgamation of dark, violent, and disturbing.

When Christian Bale Fell Asleep Filming Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins Scene Startling Co-star Micahel Caine: “He’s Bloody Fallen Asleep!”
Image
Christian Bale Fell Asleep Filming Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins (Photo Credit – Netflix)

Filming an iconic franchise can bring down the mightiest of actors. The gruelling hours can take a toll even on the most consummate professionals. Christian Bale can attest to this. The Prestige actor once had to be shaken awake by his baffled co-star Michael Caine after he nodded off mid-scene.

In 2005, Christopher Nolan was recruited to reboot the Batman franchise after the disastrous performance of 1997’s “Batman & Robin.” Critics and audiences slammed the film starring George Clooney and Chris Donnell. It also tanked at the box office, grossing a subdued $238 million against a budget of $125 million.

Christopher Nolan then swooped in to save the franchise from the brink of extinction. Nolan added his own darker spin to the Batman origin story, which was missing from its predecessors. However, it was a challenging task.

Marvel Gives Blade Writer a Very Promising Update, So Fans Can Probably Get Excited

David S. Goyer is more than willing to return to Blade if Marvel ever requires his assistance. The filmmaker recently offered an update on the long-gestating project.

Liam Neeson’s Most Grounded Suspense Thriller Way Better Than ‘Taken’ Is an August 2025 Streaming Hit
Image
Liam Neeson’s 2014 thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones has suddenly become a streaming favorite. According to Flixpatrol, the film climbed to number 5 on Paramount+’s most-watched list this August. So far, it’s a surprising resurgence for the thriller, since it has often been overshadowed by Neeson’s explosive success in the 2008 movie Taken.

However, it seems that over time, people have realized that, unlike Taken’s adrenaline-fueled chase scenes and iconic phone threats, A Walk Among the Tombstones is a slow-burn mystery soaked in grit and grief. And that’s what makes it such an interesting and almost evergreen source of binge-watching.

In the 2014 movie, Liam Neeson plays Matthew Scudder, a haunted ex-cop turned private investigator hired by a drug dealer to track down his wife’s brutal killers. Now, while Taken scored a higher IMDb rating at 7.7, A Walk Among the Tombstones sits at 6.5. But the latter delivers a far deeper,...

How Christopher Nolan Honored Heath Ledger’s Joker in a Movie He Almost Didn’t Make
Image
The Dark Knight Rises made over $1 billion at the box office, but living up to The Dark Knight was a huge challenge. That movie is often called one of the best American films of the 21st century, so expectations were sky-high.

One big issue for fans was that Batman spends most of the film injured, dealing with a broken back and a bad knee. While Bruce Wayne’s struggle to recover and fight again is a classic Batman story, many viewers felt it didn’t work well on screen. After all, a Batman movie where Batman isn’t really Batman for most of the time feels strange, unless the focus is on the Joker, maybe.

Christopher Nolan, the director, was well aware of the shadow The Dark Knight cast. In fact, he hesitated to even make a third film. When he finally decided to complete the trilogy, Nolan chose to...

How ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Secretly Honored Heath Ledger’s Joker Without Saying His Name
Image
The Dark Knight Rises is probably one of the most talked-about billion-dollar movies ever made—right up there with Avatar. It made over $1 billion at the box office, but it faced huge challenges living up to The Dark Knight, which is often called one of the best American films of the 21st century. One big reason some fans had mixed feelings was that Batman himself spends most of the movie dealing with injuries like a broken back or a bad knee.

While Bruce Wayne’s struggle to heal and fight is a classic part of Batman’s story, many felt it didn’t work well on screen. After all, a Batman movie where Batman is mostly sidelined feels off, unless it’s all about the Joker, maybe.

Christopher Nolan, the director, knew how hard it would be to follow The Dark Knight. He even hesitated to make a third film.

5 Underrated Liam Neeson Movies Every Fan Needs To Watch
Image
"Schindler's List," "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace," "Taken," and "Batman Begins" are really just the tip of the iceberg in the fruitful and long acting career Liam Neeson has had so far. Easily one of the best of his generation, the Northern Ireland-born actor's prowess and versatility are nothing short of astonishing. Few things demonstrate that better than the fact that at 73, Neeson is now starring in 2025's "The Naked Gun" as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen's immortal buffoonish detective in the spoof comedy franchise. Ever since his career began in the late 1970s, Neeson has portrayed controversial and unforgettable historical figures, superheroes, mentors, worrying fathers, and even skilled killing machines among a vast array of other characters in over 100 features.

As unlikely as it sounds, Neeson became an action star at the age of 56 with 2008's "Taken" (courtesy of director Pierre Morel...

Liam Neeson’s The Naked Gun Owes Everything to a Forgotten Ricky Gervais Sit-Com
Image
Akiva Schaffer wasn’t a fan of the idea of a Naked Gun remake, especially in 2025. However, when he went to the meeting, Schaffer was made aware that Liam Neeson was onboard the project as Frank Dreblin Jr., and that changed everything.

The director revealed to the Filmmaker Toolkit podcast (via IndieWire) that a single four-minute clip from Ricky Gervais‘ Life’s Too Short series that featured Liam Neeson in a deadpan role was enough to convince Akiva Schaffer to helm the directorial chair for The Naked Gun.

It’s all in that clip. He’s playing Liam Neeson in it, but it’s clearly a caricature. That’s an amalgamation of every action movie he’s made for the last 10 years, and he’s playing it so serious and so humorless and saying crazy sh*t.

Schaffer continued,

That’s also why when they said Liam Neeson, I went, ‘Oh,...

Brandon Sanderson Confirmed Mistborn Was Inspired by Marvel & DC Superheroes
Image
Fantasy author Brandon Sanderson revealed he’s a huge fan of comic book superheroes, specifically those from Marvel and DC. His interest in the protagonists of these two giant empires translated well in his writing progress, as evident in their influences on the Mistborn series.

While speaking with Adria’s News, he confirmed that the characters’ special powers in his novel franchise were largely inspired by superheroes:

I’m fascinated by what would happen if normal people were given divine powers, right? And I take it different directions in different series, but I think that one of the cores of fantasy genre is “what do we human beings do with extraordinary abilities?” It’s the same in the superhero genre; it’s a thing they share together and it’s something that I’m fascinated by. I’m quite a fan. I was wearing my Iron Man T-shirt yesterday.
