‘His Motorbike, Her Island’ Blu-ray Review (Cult Epics)
Image
Stars: Kiwako Harada, Riki Takeuchi, Noriko Watanabe, Tomokazu Miura | Directed by Nobuhiko Obayashi

Recently, Cult Epics have been releasing some amazing Blu-rays. We have seen Wan Pipel, The Last Island, and AmnesiA, to name a few; and one thing is for sure, Cult Epics do not skimp on their Blu-rays. They add great bonuses to make their releases live up to the “epic” in their moniker. Now the latest film to receive the Blu-ray treatment is Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1986 award-winning romantic film, His Motorbike, Her Island.

Following a painful breakup, macho biker Koh (Riki Takeuchi) skips town and hits the road on his beloved Kawasaki W3 650. On his countryside excursion, he encounters the free-spirited Miyo who quickly takes interest in both the leather-clad Koh and his motorbike. Koh and Miyo fall in love even as Miyo’s prodigious biking talent and thrill-seeking tendencies heighten Koh’s fear that she may push it all too far.

Godzilla Franchise Update Reveals Toho Is Pushing For Two Sequels, Including One For A Recent $113M Oscar Winner
Image
Toho is planning sequels to multiple Godzilla movies. Toho is a Japanese production company that is best known for the Godzilla franchise, which follows a giant irradiated lizard who is alternately depicted as a rampaging avatar of destruction or a valiant hero who defends humanity from other monsters.

Altogether, there are 33 Japanese Godzilla movies and five English-language installments, four of which are part of Legendary's Monsterverse, which also features monsters and locations from the King Kong movies.

Per Bloomberg, after distributing 2023's Godzilla Minus One themselves and earning $116 million worldwide against a slim reported budget of just $15 million, Toho is pushing to own more of its content. This includes the planned sequel to Godzilla Minus One, which is currently in development.

However, Toho's international head Koji Ueda also revealed that, in addition to the upcoming Godzilla Minus One 2, Toho's plans include a follow-up to 2016's Shin Godzilla and...

The Strongest Versions of Godzilla's Atomic Breath, Ranked
Image
The first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Godzilla is a kaiju of mammoth size and immense strength who leaves behind only death and ruin. What people often forget is that Godzilla is also a walking nuclear reactor. The energy beam blasts from his mouth come out as a byproduct of his internal fission reaction. Called the atomic breath, this high-temperature, kinetic energy attack has become the King of the Monsters' signature weapon over the years.

The destructive power of Godzilla's atomic breath is inconsistent. It changes with each era and each movie, according to the purpose it serves in the narrative. But in recent times, Godzilla's atomic breath has been getting astronomically stronger with his size. The strongest atomic breaths are terribly powerful and hauntingly beautiful, immortalizing moments from Godzilla's illustrious history and reminding humans of how puny they are.

Mothra Holds A Shocking Franchise Record That Even Godzilla's Strongest Villains Will Never Top
Image
Although Mothra isn't exactly renowned for her power level, her fights in the Godzilla franchise have yielded her an impressive accomplishment. Over the years, Mothra has clashed with an interesting assortment of kaiju associated with Godzilla. In addition to the King of the Monsters himself, Mothra has also done battle with two of Godzilla's kaiju villains in Toho's movies, King Ghidorah and Gigan. And thanks to the Monsterverse, she's even had a fight with Rodan, the monster considered by many to be Godzilla's greatest ally.

With those monsters - plus Godzilla - as opponents, it's no surprise that Mothra has died as many times as she has. Mothra has met her end in multiple movies, including her Monsterverse debut in Godzilla: King of the Monsters and her first film with Godzilla, Mothra vs. Godzilla. However, that's not to see that she hasn't fared well in monster fights.

Japan's Most Bizarre Crossover Highlights Barbenheimer's Biggest Missed Opportunity
Image
Barbenheimer was an unprecedented cultural event. Born from two vastly different movies marketed at different audiences, with zero things in common other than a release date and the fact that they had big budgets, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" somehow inspired a totally organic, fan-driven "crossover." Granted, it was never really a proper crossover, and neither film's marketing campaigns acknowledged the other's, but fans didn't care. As much as the cultural conversation was aware, Barbenheimer was real, and it made both "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" hugely successful at the box office.

Indeed, the fan-made double feature caught on, and soon enough thousands of people were planning to watch both halves of Barbenheimer back-to-back on release day, embracing each film as part of a whole rather than play into box office competition. But years before people coined the term Barbenheimer, and even years before another brilliant piece of counter programming made both "The Dark Knight...

Oh No, Godzilla X Kong Is Already Hinting At Mothra's Second Monsterverse Death
Image
Mothra may die again in the Monsterverse, hinted at by her reflection in Jia's eye in the new Godzilla x Kong trailer. Mothra's sacrifice in King of the Monsters empowered Godzilla's new form, shown in the trailer with blue energy and nuclear pulse. Mothra's potential second death could explain Godzilla's power-ups, with her weakening state allowing for stronger enhancements.

In the same trailer that revealed Mothra's return, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire dropped a clue that could point to the beloved kaiju dying for a second time in the Monsterverse. The second Godzilla x Kong trailer included a split-second scene that confirms Mothra's presence in the fifth Monsterverse movie. Mothra could be seen as a reflection in Jia's eye, meaning that she may be relevant to whatever visions Jia is experiencing in Godzilla and Kong's new team-up movie.

Regardless, the shot of Mothra is a clear-cut sign...

Godzilla Minus One director is interested in making a sequel with a kaiju battle in it
Image
Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. The film made its way over to the United States in December… and it became the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America even before a black and white version was released under the title Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color. Director Takashi Yamazaki has let it be known that he’s interested in making a sequel, and during a new interview with Empire magazine he revealed that he would like to feature some “kaiju vs. kaiju” action in the follow-up, if Toho lets him make it!

Yamazaki said, “I would certainly like to see what the sequel would look like. I know that Shikishima’s war seems over, and we’ve reached this state...

Hulu New Releases: February 2024

While the streamer’s own original content is somewhat limited – Life + Beth is returning for season 2 – you can also catch the new series of Feud this month. Godzilla Minus One Sequel Chances Following Shocking Ending Reveal Addressed By Director
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Godzilla Minus One.

The director of Godzilla Minus One expressed his desire to make a sequel after fulfilling his dream of making a Godzilla movie. He said that he felt "lonely" after making the movie and wants to direct one more. The shocking Godzilla Minus One ending suggests that one of the main characters may have developed radiation poisoning and that Godzilla may not be truly dead.

The director of Godzilla Minus One has addressed a potential sequel. The movie, which is the 33rd Japanese-language Godzilla movie produced by Toho, is a post-World War II drama following former kamikaze pilot Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) attempting to rebuild his life in a war-torn Tokyo along with the similarly orphaned Noriko Ōishi (Minami Hamabe), only to have the city threatened by the emergence of the giant monster Godzilla. While the movie ended with Godzilla defeated and the couple reunited,...

The Correct Order To Watch All Of The Godzilla Movies
Image
U.S. audiences tend to accept Toho's earlier Godzilla movies as being high camp, usually thanks to Gen-x's half-remembered airings of late-'60s kaiju flicks broadcast on Uhf TV channels back in the 1980s. While there are some absurd and terrible Godzilla films from the Showa era (1954-1975), and many of them contained surreal, kitschy plot elements like invading aliens, one might also find several movies -- "Gojira," "Destroy All Monsters" -- that focus on Japanese national pride, the role of destructive weapons in the world, and a barely-simmering resentment lingering after a massive attack on the country. If modern superhero movies sprung from the U.S. subconscious as a fantastical revenge/preventative measure against 9/11, so too did Godzilla spring fully formed from the trauma left behind by the U.S.' atomic bomb attacks.

In the original "Gojira," that is literal. The titular creature, a stories-high amphibious animal,...

Godzilla 2000 is set to return to theaters in November
Image
The most famous kaiju in the world is set to make his triumphant rerelease to the big screen in more ways than one. The resurgence of Godzilla has blown up almost as big as the monster itself. The U.S. retried our hand at the gargantuan creature with 2014’s Godzilla, which aimed for redemption from the 1998 name-only version. That reintroduction spawned a monster-verse with King Kong getting his own reboot and culminating in a rumble for the film Godzilla vs. Kong. Not only is there to be a spin-off series with Monarch: Legacy of Monsters featuring the “Gorilla-whale,” but this December sees a new era with the Toho film Godzilla Minus One.

Fans of the series can now also celebrate the introduction of the Millennium series as Godzilla-movies.com reveals that special screenings of Godzilla 2000 will be shown at AMC theaters courtesy of Fathom Events. Fandango has listed the...

17 Monsters Killed By Godzilla
Image
Godzilla has killed over a dozen kaiju throughout his film history, including Anguirus, Mothra, Ebirah, and others. Godzilla's archenemy, King Ghidorah, has been killed by Godzilla six times, including a death in the MonsterVerse. Other monsters that have met their demise at the hands of Godzilla include Mechagodzilla, Baragon, and the MUTOs in the MonsterVerse.

Well over a dozen kaiju have met their ends at the hands of Godzilla. Across more than 30 movies, Godzilla has come to blows with most of the monsters in the franchise. Throughout his time on the big screen, Godzilla has vanquished more than his fair share of opponents.

At one point or another, Godzilla has killed the vast majority of the villains in his rogues’ gallery. A few, on the other hand, such as Biollante and Rodan, haven’t been slain by Godzilla at all. In contrast, there are some who have been killed by him on multiple occasions,...

Why Only 1 Godzilla Movie Made The Humans The True Villains
Image
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II stands out as the one Godzilla movie where the human characters are the true antagonists of the story. Godzilla's roles in his movies tend to vary, but the same doesn’t really apply to the humans. Whether Godzilla is their enemy or not, they're generally portrayed as the protagonists.

In most Godzilla movies, the goals of the human characters are largely consistent. Regardless of who the threat is, their focus is on averting destruction. Sometimes, that involves thwarting Godzilla, investigating mysterious activities, or foiling a plot masterminded by aliens. In some situations, such as Godzilla: King of the Monsters, rogue groups of humans are at the heart of the problem, forcing the movie's main characters to rise up and stop them. One movie that quietly deviates from the formula is Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II. Released in 1993, the fifth installment in the Heisei series saw Godzilla...

Godzilla Island TV series gets international release on YouTube
Godzilla (2014)
Between October 6, 1997 and September 30, 1998, 256 episodes of Godzilla Island, a TV series spin-off from the Godzilla film franchise, aired on TV Tokyo in Japan. Twenty-five years later, Godzilla Island is finally getting an official international release, complete with English subtitles… and it’s being released through YouTube! An episode of Godzilla Island will be released on the Godzilla Official by Toho YouTube channel every Tuesday and Thursday.

If you’re a Godzilla fan who hasn’t heard much, if anything, about Godzilla Island, it’s understandable. Each episode of the show is only 3 minutes long, and the kaiju featured on the show weren’t brought to life through “suitmation” like in the Toho movies. Instead, the monsters are portrayed with toys created by Bandai. The first episode of Godzilla Island can be seen in the embed at the bottom of this article, to give you an idea of what the show is like.

Godzilla Vs. Kong Toy Fair Art Reveals a New Look for the King of All Monsters
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
The King has arrived at the New York Toy Fair. A new promo image from Godzilla Vs Kong has been showcased at the event, which is taking place this weekend, and it has made its way online, providing us with our best look yet at the legendary monster's updated look for the new movie. If this photo is any indication, it could be yet another sign that another classic character from the franchise is going to show up, which will seemingly complicate things for both Godzilla and King Kong.

The Toy Fair image sees Godzilla standing amidst some very tall buildings in an unidentified city, shooting his atomic breath into the sky. At what, or who, precisely, he's aiming we're not sure. Though, it's not unreasonable to assume this rage is directed at a certain, large primate that is also being highlighted in the movie's title. The major takeaway here is the monster's fins,...
