Like other CLAMP anime and manga productions, X contains crossover references to other works by the group. Specifically, Subaru, Hokuto and Seishiro come from Tokyo Babylon, while the CLAMP campus originated in CLAMP Campus Detectives.
The series features characters from CLAMP's other manga series called Tokyo Babylon, that was made into a two episode OVA series and was originally a seven volume Manga series that was licensed in North America by Tokyopop. The two episode OVA was licensed in North America by Central Park Media / US Manga Corps and in the UK by Manga Entertainment.
Before the television series was made in 2001, in 1996, a feature film was created and was directed Rintaro. This premiered in Japan on August 3rd, 1996 and was licensed in North America by Manga Video / Manga Entertainment, It was released on March 10th, 2000 in North America.
Based on an eighteen volume manga series by CLAMP. The manga series had been on hiatus since 2002 however, there was a 'X 18.5' issue that was published in Japan in Newtype Magazine, this was also published in a guidebook entitled 'All About Clamp'.
Two video games were released only in Japan, one was for the PlayStation 1 and the other was for the WonderSwan Color.
