Throughout the movie, Winona Ryder's character makes several references to Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". These include "falling out of Boo Radley's apple tree" and referring to her neighbor as "Mrs. Finch" and the neighbor's dog as "Atticus".
When Babe, pretending to be a school nurse, talks to Longfellow on the phone, she says that a boy named Billy Barty is in her office, sick. This is a tribute to actor Billy Barty, who died in 2000, three months before production started.
During the dinner scene, Adam Sandler's character Deeds remarks that Walter Williamson's opera singer character Kurt looks like Mr. French. Kurt replies that he doesn't know who Mr. French is and has never heard of him. Mr. French, or Giles French, is the character portrayed by Sebastian Cabot from the television series Tre nipoti e un maggiordomo (1966). Cabot and Williamson were no relation.
