Madhukar Zende at an event for Zende (2023)
Netflix’s Inspector Zende Cast and Character Guide
Madhukar Zende at an event for Zende (2023)
While our innate threat assessment might have a role to play in our obsession with serial killers, the sensationalization done by the media is equally responsible. The case of the infamous Bikini Killer, Charles Sobhraj, is a glaring example of that. Despite having committed horrendous crimes throughout the majority of his life across different parts of the world, Sobhraj gained celeb status thanks to his ‘reputation’ as a womanizer. There is no dearth of movies, series, and documentaries made on this pathetic dreg of a person; hell, Netflix alone has already made two series on him. Apparently, the streaming channel still wants to milk viewers’ fascination with the criminal, as...

22 Years Of E Niwas’ Dum starring Vivek Oberoi
Image
E. Niwas’ third feature film Dum, which clocked 22 years on January 24, is like a newspaper report. Grim, dark, traumatic, and yet thrilling. In the working class hero’s fight with a corrupt law enforcer, the audience might mutter: “Thank God it isn’t us.”

Protagonist Uday Shinde, played by Vivek Oberoi, takes on the immoral might of a villainous cop Shankar, played by Atul Kulkarni, a human being so degenerate and debased that he makes Sholay’s Gabbar Singh seem like a comic strip character.

There’s nothing colourful, uplifting or comforting about Dum. If you regard cinema as a form of escapist entertainment, then Niwas’s film is a no-no. But if you regard cinema as a mirror of social reality, then Dum is a hard sock in the jaw.

A corrupt cop barges into an honest colleague’s home and tries to gas his wife to death. When she escapes,...

Piyush Mishra and exorcising Hamlet’s ghost
Image
He may have stunned the entire theatre fraternity with the portrayal of Hamlet in the Shakespearean tragedy as a student at the National School of Drama (Nsd) and later with his solo performances ‘An Evening with Piyush Mishra’. But for decades, the character’s ghost never left the actor – entering his personal space and clawing up to his very being.

“You cannot imagine the adulteration. A certain arrogance, complete self-indulgence, alcoholism… in my mind, I was the solo actor on life’s stage and everybody else was not supposed to take their eyes off my brilliance. Yes, I committed many mistakes. Confessing them was traumatic, but also cathartic,” he says with just the right dramatic pauses.

Mishra, the superstar of Delhi stage with a cult following during his time where he worked with theatre directors like N K Shar and Arvind Gaur, and also wrote the play ‘Hamlet Bombay Nahin...

Recommended New Books on Filmmaking: Analyzing David Fincher, Reminiscing With Spike Lee, the Making of Dune & More
Image
The holiday season is here, and with it comes a whole lot of gift-worthy books, as well as — if you don’t have kids — plenty of time to do some reading. This final Film Stage books column of 2021 features a diverse mix of glossy making-ofs, some career retrospectives, and much more.

One sad note that I neglected to mention in my last two columns: J.W. Rinzler, author of the definitive making-of books about the original Star Wars trilogy, passed away on July 28. He set the standard for detailed, ever-readable studies of how some of our favorite films came to be; this column most recently featured his work in November 2020, when reviewing The Making of Aliens. As we move into a new year, it seems fitting to recognize the writing of a man whose behind-the-scenes accounts were often as memorable and noteworthy as the films themselves. Pan Nalin’s ‘Last Film Show’ Tops Valladolid
Image
Indian helmer Pan Nalin’s “Last Film Show” walked off on Saturday with the top prize, the Golden Spike, at the 66th Valladolid Intl. Film Festival, one of Spain’s biggest and oldest film events and a bastion of festival-prized art film titles.

The French-Indian co-production marks Nalin’s homage to celluloid and is told through the eyes of a nine-year-old boy whose life is turned on its head after he watches his first film at the cinema. World premiering at Tribeca, it became the first foreign-language feature to score as the first runner up for Tribeca’s Audience Award.

Writer and director Pan Nalin said: “What we started in our solitude in a remote countryside of Gujarat has now started to echoing in multitudes the world over. Winning the best picture Golden Spike at the Seminci is like belonging to the rich history of cinema that Valladolid has stood for nearly seven decades.

Banksy, notably, was not involved in the sale. Instead, the “Spike” Nft was minted and sold by Vittorio Grigòlo, an opera singer and Valuart co-founder, who is in possession of the actual “Spike” piece. The series will see the rivals settling into a new home in the city's Royal Gate Hotel, with all kinds of madcap hijinks ensuing in and around the streets of America's best known city. While the movie received middling reviews, placing the pair on the small screen where they have always worked best could well see the duo back to their best.

Coming from Renegade Animation and directed by Darrell Van Citters, the series should be in good hands, as Renegade have been involved with the Tom and Jerry...

Nawazuddin started his career with Shool (1999), where he played the role of a waiter. “In an Amitabh Bachchan film, its best to go for the negative character”, says Manoj Bajpai
Manoj Bajpai is known for his strong characters portrayed on-screen. The actor who has won many accolades for his roles in movies like Shool, Satya, Zubeidaa and Raajneeti amongst many others has been paired yet again opposite Big B in a negative role for his upcoming movie Satyagraha.

The National Film Award Winning actor prefers to do a villainous role while sharing the screen space with the mega star. He feels that no other character stands strong enough opposite Amitabh Bachchan and thus it is better to do a negative role.

“In an Amitabh Bachchan film, there’s no other role which is better than his. In such a situation it’s only the negative role which is as good as his, so it’s best to go for the negative. I must say in films like Aks, Aarakshan or even Satyagraha now, the roles were written very carefully,” said Bajpai.

Raveena Tandon wins best actress at Houston
Raveena Tandon
This week Raveena Tandon has much reason to rejoice. She has won the Best Actress award for her performance in Sudipto Chattopadhyay's Shobhna's 7 Nights at the Houston Bollywood Film Festival which concluded on October 7 with the announcement of Raveena's triumph.

Interestingly, there is only one acting award at the Houston Bollywood Film Festival which covers both the male and female category of nominations. Raveena therefore beat competition from Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi in Dibakar Bannerjee's Shanghai to get the award.

Squealing in delight from Houston after the announcement, Raveena said, "I've hardly received awards in my career so far. I did get the National award for Daman. But that was a one-off thing. I thought I deserved recognition for Shool and Aks. But I was seen as glamorous commercial actress. Hence, not eligible for awards. Now when I've played the most glamorous role of my life, I get the Best Actress award.

To ensure the authenticity of the track, Riteish turned singer and lyricist for the Marathi portions in the track and sat with the composers Meet Brothers Anjjan to understand the meter and rhythm of the track. As a result, the...
