The wait is almost over for the beginning of the new Digimon anime series, and today Toei Animation decided to make the wait a little bit easier for fans all over the world. After releasing a single, darkened image from the upcoming Digimon Beatbreak, the animation studio unveiled a first trailer that finally provides a bit of insight into the tone of the series, its protagonist, and its Digimon companion. The series is slated to premiere on October 5.
The trailer for Digimon Beatbreak showcases the birth of a new Digimon. This part is common ground for viewers, but what might take them to new territory is the new series' setting — and its protagonist. From the looks of it, the new Digimon spin-off will take place in a futuristic and maybe even dystopian world. The Digimon franchise has entered a bold new phase. After decades of nostalgia-driven reboots and continuations centered on the original DigiDestined, Toei Animation is officially ushering in a fresh era with Digimon Beatbreak. Scheduled to premiere in October 2025, this upcoming anime makes one thing clear, that the Digimon Adventure era is finally over.
The newly revealed key visual and character details suggest a dramatic shift. With an entirely new protagonist, a unique partner Digimon, and no ties to the Digimon Adventure legacy, Digimon Beatbreak is the first mainline series in years to strike out on its own. It is a major step for the franchise, and it is one that longtime fans have been anticipating with mixed emotions.

Digimon Beatbreak introduces Tomorou Tenma, a 15-year-old high schooler who partners with Geckomon, which is a Digimon rarely given the spotlight.

This will be a pretty good summer for Digimon Adventure fans. This week, Toei Animation announced that they will kick off an event called "Summer Weekend Splash," during which the animation company will make marathon blocks of some of its landmark series — the biggest of them is Digimon Adventure. The best part is, the episodes will become available to stream for free in English on YouTube. You just need to kick back, press play, and jump on the nostalgia train. The live event starts on June 28.
Even though Toei Animation didn't explain what they mean by "marathon blocks," it's possible that the live channel will air several episodes of Digimon but not all of them at once. Since the company also teased titles like Precure and Magical DoReMi, there's a chance that fans will have to tune in at specific times to watch the block of episodes they want to...

One of the most popular sub-genres within the anime world is the isekai. This is the type of story in which the main character is transported to a different world and has to learn the ins and outs of a different location in order to thrive and eventually return home. The format was subverted in Ya Boy Kongming!, an underrated 2022 anime series that was quickly adapted into live-action. Now, this adaptation is coming to Netflix, and you will be able to discover why the story managed to captivate a loyal fanbase. The live-action series debuts on Netflix this Friday, May 30.
Ya Boy Kongming! is a comedy series that centers around a famous military strategist from ancient Japan, Zhuge Kongming (Osamu Mukai). After wishing to live in a less chaotic time, he gets reborn in modern-day Japan and has to learn how to interact with technology and to live in a futuristic (for him) Tokyo.

With Digimon Adventures Closing Its Doors, the Franchise's Next Anime Promises to Be Way, Way Darker
Digimonhas always set itself apart from other anime shows aimed at families for how dark it can get. Early series such as Digimon Adventure and Digimon Tamers were never afraid to treat their young viewers with respect by diving into themes such as family separation and depression. Given this, it's surprising that the hit franchise's next anime, Digimon Beatbreak, is going to be even darker, according to the franchise's music producer.
In an interview with Real Sound, Digimon producer Yu Kaminoki spoke about what fans can expect from Beatbreak. When Kaminoki asked about Beatbreak's darker atmosphere, Kaminoki gave a response that indicated the new series will be more relevant to modern audiences.

The world of the original Digimonanime was rife with many digital monsters, with some of these having an almost mythological presence. This was especially the case for Devimon, who was literally characterized as a sort of fallen angel. He wasn't the only one with this seemingly Biblical nature, with another esoteric being representing the moral balance in the Digital World.
Homeostasis is both a being and a concept in the classic Digimon continuity, but it isn't an actual Digimon itself. Lacking a corporeal form of its own, it instead uses conduits to host its personality and power. Two months ago, Hulu removed several anime from its Toei Animation Network page, including multiple seasons of Digimon, Dragon Ball and One Piece. Now, once again, the first four seasons of Digimon have returned to the platform and are available for streaming.
Digimon disappearing only to reappear a couple of months later is, unfortunately, nothing new for the series, nor older shows available for streaming in general. Thanks to the way licensing deals and streaming rights work, having a series come and go from major platforms as licenses expire and get renewed is common. For Digimon in particular, this is not the first time the series has taken a short sabbatical from being available for streaming, and it's unlikely to be the last.

Unlike other franchises of its kind, Digimon has boldly experimented with all its iterations. Digimon Adventure 02 officially marked the end of a continued timeline as the third season paved the way for a completely different era. Digimon Tamers introduced a new set of DigiDestined and an entirely new Digital World. The anime's inception was a defining moment in the franchise, but it also divided the fandom.
Some found the change of pace and scenery welcoming, while others thought that the new story did not adjust well in the overall canvas. However, disliking Digimon Tamers out of loyalty to the original series did not change the fact that it was actually good. The upending of the original lore and discontinuity that came with this season made it a success.

But what humans don't know is that on the other side of the Network is the Digital World, a realm of light and darkness. Nor are they aware of the Digimon who live there.

Digimon was once one of the biggest anime and media franchises out there, but it's also remained in the shadow of Pokémon. The same also goes for the original Digimon anime, creating a sort of nostalgia trap. Thankfully, there might be a way to take the brand in a new direction, and it's already being seen in non-anime mediums.
Digimon Liberator is the newest form of the franchise's card game, but it also has an accompanying web comic and web novel. Many have noted it as a unique version of Digimon in years, though others have noted that the mediums that the story is told through are almost hampering its potential. With all of this already laid out, an anime adapting these concepts is perhaps the best way to revive the franchise for anime fans.

With more than nine different Digimon stories spanning the nine different anime series, the Digital World has seen its fair share of characters, from the heroic leaders like Tai Kamiya or Hiro Amanokawa to their Digimon partners, such as Agumon and Gammamon. Yet no series would be complete without a world in which the heroes navigate, and those worlds require characters to fill them.
These side characters might not get as much screen time as the main heroes, but their inclusion is still necessary for the series to thrive. And with the high number of supporting characters spanning the nine different Digimon series, some side characters — both human and Digimon — have left a lasting impression on fans. From Izzy’s loving and protective parents in Digimon Adventure to Digimon Tamers Ryo Akiyama providing a rival for Rika to keep her striving for greatness, these side characters don’t get the attention they deserve.

Pokémon Horizons is the most recent anime adaption of the popular Pokémon franchise. Although the new series follows the same blueprint as its predecessor, it has many noticeable differences. For example, each main protagonist trainer seems to have only one Pokémon they rely on in battle. Roy's Fuecoco is by far his most used Pokémon. While Roy has other Pokémon, like Kilowattrel, they rarely get any time in duels and primarily serve as transportation. This marks one of the biggest changes to Pokémon's formula since Ash Ketchum's debut. Understandably, many older fans were less than thrilled with this alteration.
The recent changes to Pokémon Horizons have reminded many fans of another popular monster-taming anime. Digimon has long since profited from developing a single trainer and monster relationship. Pokémon has avoided the similarities in the past, but these recent alterations make the comparisons inescapable. Overall, one seemingly insignificant change to...

Digimon and Pokémon have always been on the opposite ends of the spectrum for anime fans. While the '90s kids grew up watching both, the segregation eventually happened as the franchises grew in different directions. Digimon experimented with various backdrops featuring different sets of protagonists while Pokémon focused on Ash’s singular journey to become a Pokémon Master.
However, despite the latter being a better commercial success, fans felt that Pokémon inherently lacked something that Digimon excelled at doing since the very beginning. Despite having similar designs and concepts behind the creatures in each universe, it has become evident that strong storytelling and character development triumphs over longevity and standardization.

Since its debut in 1999, Digimonhas often been compared to Pokémon, as both incorporate a wide collection of unique monsters, have an element of partnership between the Digimon and humans, include a strong element of adventure and are geared predominantly toward children. These similarities merely reach the tip of the iceberg, as more tropes and themes abound that draw these two franchises into the same arena, with the close timing of their respective launches sparking a rivalry that still has fans debating to this day.
One of the biggest points of comparison and contention among these two franchises stem from their mascots. Pokémon has the iconic Pikachu, the adorable electric mouse who’s instantly recognizable thanks to his decades-long adventures with Ash Ketchum, the previous protagonist of the Pokémon anime series. Conversely, Digimon fans argue that Agumon, the orange and courageous dinosaur, is the franchise’s answer to Pikachu.

As one of the most beloved anime franchises to emerge from the early 2000s, Digimon always had the potential to offer a continual storyline. The DigiDestined were only kids when they went to the Digital World, which left a lot of space for their characters to develop in regards to the future. Therefore, when Digimon Season 2 entered the scene, fans had high hopes for the adventure to continue in a different direction.
Unfortunately, Digimon Adventure 02 divided the fandom, with many finding the transition to different Chosen Children unsatisfactory. Moreover, the sequel followed up on the lives of the original children and they made cameos every now and then. It would have made more sense to have someone from the original group like T.K. leading the band. It’s safe to say that a change in leadership was one of the biggest downsides of Digimon Season 2.

The Digimon franchise is one of the pioneering names of the isekai genre. The franchise stood out because of its unorthodox approach to the concept of characters being transported to another realm. While the original idea was deeply embedded in the core elements of an isekai anime, the franchise took bold steps and eventually evolved the idea of DigiDestined and their digital partners.
The DigiDestined or the Chosen Children are the protagonists of every iteration in which they form a bond with anthropomorphic creatures made out of data called the Digimon. The series initially didn't explore the logistics of why and how the DigiDestined are paired up with their partners. However, Digimon Adventure tri. and the 2020 reboot were instrumental in explaining the mysterious process of being bonded with a Digimon.

Most anime are not geared toward children. Many of them have themes that only teens up to adults would be mature enough to handle. As a parent who loves anime, it's hard to know what and when to share one’s passions with one’s children. Parenthood can be tough. Thankfully, Crunchyroll has many anime that families - or just parents - can enjoy.
Crunchyroll’s plethora of series ensures all demographics are covered. Some anime are shared as a family. These anime are fun and cutesy or classic adventures that families can take on together. Other anime simply show the struggles and highs of parenthood, and how being an adult surrounded by children can affect one’s life. No matter what Otaku parents are looking for, Crunchyroll is sure to have an anime to fit the bill.

Digimon Adventure revolutionized anime. Casuals may write off the franchise as a faux-Pokémon, but the differences are clear for any fans who watched. Digimon boasts isekai anime flair, and its titular creatures come with unprecedented power scaling that Pokémon lacks. While other monster-taming anime focus on tournaments, the original anime Digimon Adventure features apocalyptic stakes, Ultimate-level showdowns and dimension-shattering Mega forms that elevate it to a different epic experience.

Within the Digimon franchise, Agumon reigns as one of the most widely recognized characters, thanks in large part to his partnership with Tai Kamiya in Digimon Adventure. Anyone remotely familiar with Digimonas a property is at least aware of Agumon. The franchise's reptilian mascot has been with the franchise since the beginning, and it's been featured in many anime and video games. Out of all the Agumon that fans have had the joy of spending time with, none are as popular as Tai Yagami's Agumon from Digimon Adventure, Digimon Adventure 02, Digimon Adventure tri., Digimon Adventure (2020), and Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.
Tai's Agumon is the most iconic character in the Digimon anime, and there's a lot that fans need to know about the fire-breathing dinosaur. Various retcons over the years have made his backstory hazy, his personality isn't the most well-known thing about him, and his friendship with Tai has changed as Tai himself has changed. Agumon also possesses some of the most powerful Digivolutions of all time, and has taken on more forms than many realize.

When Digimon Adventures began in 1999, the anime captivated audiences across the world with its fun and engaging blend of cute monsters, dynamic battles and moments of fierce friendship. Aside from Digivices, Tags and Crests, a very specific piece of clothing became an iconic visual trademark of the series and an indicator of the DigiDestined leader: a pair of goggles. Starting with Tai Kamiya in Digimon Adventure, goggles have become synonymous with the chosen child and leader of the other DigiDestined.
At first glance, goggles might seem like nothing more than aesthetic design choice, but their significance runs deep within the context of the Digimon franchise, taking on an important role beyond being a mere fashion accessory. The Pokémon anime is one of the most widely known and popular series ever. Over the extensive seasons and episodes, the original Pokémon fans have slowly begun to stop relating to the anime. This is for many reasons, but one of the most prevalent is Pokémon's overtly childish charm. There's no shame in marketing to the target demographic, but the original fans have long since surpassed Ash Ketchum in age. Unlike in other areas of the franchise, Digimon in the Digimon anime typically only have a single Digivolution line, give or take small branches. This means that all the Digimon in a line follow the same design aesthetic, and are easily recognizable as the same character. However, there are still plenty of times when there are few to no visual similarities between a Digimon and its Digivolved form.
Digivolutions in the Digimon anime can sometimes seem strange, but that doesn't make them any less exciting. Occasionally, a Digivolution can make sense visually, but seem nonsensical narratively. Because Digimon always has at least some element of fantasy to it, these instances are easy to overlook, and it's even easier to bask in how cool they can be.
