In the latest installment, Robert Napton recalls his days at U.S. Renditions, which was the Special Projects Division of Books Nippan (the American branch of Nippon Shuppan Hanbai) and one of the pioneers of anime home video distribution in North America. Two months ago, Hulu removed several anime from its Toei Animation Network page, including multiple seasons of Digimon, Dragon Ball and One Piece. Now, once again, the first four seasons of Digimon have returned to the platform and are available for streaming.

Digimon disappearing only to reappear a couple of months later is, unfortunately, nothing new for the series, nor older shows available for streaming in general. Thanks to the way licensing deals and streaming rights work, having a series come and go from major platforms as licenses expire and get renewed is common. For Digimon in particular, this is not the first time the series has taken a short sabbatical from being available for streaming, and it's unlikely to be the last.

It's pretty easy to get hyped up by Digimon Adventure Beyond. Yet no series would be complete without a world in which the heroes navigate, and those worlds require characters to fill them.

These side characters might not get as much screen time as the main heroes, but their inclusion is still necessary for the series to thrive. And with the high number of supporting characters spanning the nine different Digimon series, some side characters — both human and Digimon — have left a lasting impression on fans. From Izzy’s loving and protective parents in Digimon Adventure to Digimon Tamers Ryo Akiyama providing a rival for Rika to keep her striving for greatness, these side characters don’t get the attention they deserve.

Anime distributor AnimEigo and parent company MediaOCD have announced the release of The Anime Business, a first-of-its-kind documentary series featuring interviews with a variety of pioneers of the Western anime industry.

As anime has grown from modest beginnings into a multi-billion-dollar global industry, the documentary provides insights from many notable people that played important roles in helping to popularize the genre in North America at various stages of its evolution.

The Digimon franchise is one of the pioneering names of the isekai genre. The franchise stood out because of its unorthodox approach to the concept of characters being transported to another realm. While the original idea was deeply embedded in the core elements of an isekai anime, the franchise took bold steps and eventually evolved the idea of DigiDestined and their digital partners.

The DigiDestined or the Chosen Children are the protagonists of every iteration in which they form a bond with anthropomorphic creatures made out of data called the Digimon. Masako Nozawa, the Japanese voice actor for Goku in Dragon Ball, revealed her plans for the future at the Mainichi Art Award ceremony. Nozawa has voiced Goku in numerous Dragon Ball projects for nearly 40 years.

According to Livedoor News, Nozawa was given the Special Award at the 66th Mainichi Art Awards. The award ceremony took place on Feb. 7, 2025. Nozawa (currently age 88) was awarded for demonstrating "outstanding artistic achievements between November 2023 and October 2024." Dragon Ball Daima premiered on Oct. 11, 2024, and will finish its 20-episode run on Feb. 28, 2025.

This means that all the Digimon in a line follow the same design aesthetic, and are easily recognizable as the same character. However, there are still plenty of times when there are few to no visual similarities between a Digimon and its Digivolved form.

Digivolutions in the Digimon anime can sometimes seem strange, but that doesn't make them any less exciting. Occasionally, a Digivolution can make sense visually, but seem nonsensical narratively. Because Digimon always has at least some element of fantasy to it, these instances are easy to overlook, and it's even easier to bask in how cool they can be.
