Despite getting good reviews from the press, for whom the film was screened in February 1930, the film was largely ignored by audiences when it came out in France that May, as the people at the time had quickly lost interest in silent films now that sound films were around. This was the last French silent film.
A road in Boyeux-Saint-Jérôme, one of the villages where the film was shot, is named after writer/director/star Charles Vanel.
The film underwent a 4K digital restoration in 2021 by the Eclair Classics lab, led by the Lumière Institute with support from the CNC, Chanel and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
