Writer/director Darren Stein originally intended to write a horror film. When he started writing the script, he based it on a group of girls he went to school with who would kidnap each other on their birthdays and thought, "What if that went horribly wrong?" In the process he eventually realized that he was actually writing a dark comedy.
The scene where the girls carry Liz's body upstairs and drop her was real. The actresses were struggling to carry her up the stairs in heels and lost their balance. They said actress Charlotte Ayanna was very cool about it.
The photos of the girls used during the opening credit sequence were shot on the first day. Julie Benz went to lunch with Rose McGowan after and said McGowan didn't order any food because she didn't want the paparazzi to photograph her eating. Benz thought it was a very Courtney moment.
The line Courtney (Rose McGowan) threatens Fern with in the bathroom "I made you, and I can break you just as easily" is an homage to The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), and is the same line Dr. Frank-N-Furter uses to threaten Rocky, his creation.
Pam Grier's contract states that she must be in charge of doing her own hair for her films. For this film, she's wearing about three wigs blended together.
