The filmmakers originally wanted to re-cast the same 3 male leads as their previous blockbuster film, Tridev (1989). However, since this movie was to be largely shot in Kenya, Jackie Shroff was unable to commit due to his tight schedule. Thus he was replaced by Chunky Pandey.
Gulshan Grover had shaved off his mustache for the film. His reasoning was he looked like Kamal Hassan with it. After shooting for the film for a few schedules, he arrived on the sets with a week old mustache Rajiv Rai politely asked Gulshan to shave it off because it would ruin the film's continuity. Gulshan refused but Rajiv asked him to report to the shooting the next day clean shaven. The next day arrived but Gulshan did not report for the shooting. He ignored Rajiv for 3 days, not taking his calls. The cast of Vishwatma were made to wait endlessly due to Gulshan's unprofessional behavior. Rajiv got word that Gulshan was at Sea Rock hotel shooting for another film. An angry Rajiv arrived at the hotel with a few toughie friends (Sunil Shetty) and caught Gulshan. Rajiv gave Gulshan a open hand hard slap and threatened him that he would remove his name from the film and chop his role. Gulshan got scared and reported the same day to Vishwatma's shooting clean shaven.
The song Saat Samundar Par became a rage and made Divya Bharati famous.
The joke about Vishwatma was that It was Sonam's last film, Divya Bharti's first film and Jyotsna Singh's first and last movie.
The names of Amrish Puri and his kin are all snake-based. Puri himself is called "Ajgar" which means python, his brother is called "Naagdansh" which means snakebite and his son is called "Raajnaag" which means king cobra.
