There have been many versions of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein adapted for the screen, but Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! looks set to be one of the more interesting to have been released in recent years. Although there has been little information revealed previously about the movie beyond its impressive cast, a new interview with John Magaro has revealed some key details about the movie – and it may come as a surprise.
The Bride! is directed by Gyllenhaal, and she has not scrimped on the cast. Christian Bale steps into the role of the iconic monster, while Jessie Buckley played the titular character, and they are ably aided by Penelope Cruze, Annette Bening, Peter Sarsgaard, and Magaro. According to the synopsis of the movie, the film “sees a lonely Frankenstein travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two...

September 5 star John Magaro knows he’s had a charmed run the last five years, but his Cleveland-area upbringing won’t let him get too comfortable.
Ever since his Carol director, Todd Haynes, endorsed his casting to First Cow filmmaker Kelly Reichardt in 2018, Magaro has been working like there’s no tomorrow. You can currently find him on the big screen in Tim Fehlbaum’s September 5, as well as on the small screen in the George Clooney-produced series, The Agency. He also has two films on the festival circuit this year before he’s set to appear in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! this fall. If that wasn’t enough, he just wrapped The Mastermind, his third movie with Reichardt in the last handful of years.
Magaro’s work ethic is a byproduct of growing up in Northeast Ohio, a region that’s “used to disappointment,” as he once put it.

One film that may have flown under the radar this year is Keir O'Donnell's feature directorial debut Marmalade, a romantic heist thriller that hit Hulu back in June. Starring Joe Keery as Baron, a simple-minded young man newly incarcerated after robbing a bank, Marmalade is reminiscent of films like Bonnie and Clyde and Wild at Heart — a twisted love story, but one that evolves into something completely different by the time the credits roll. Keery stars alongside Camila Morrone, who plays Baron's spunky, pink-haired girlfriend, Marmalade, and Aldis Hodge, as Baron's cellmate who offers to help him escape jail to reunite with her. Marmalade is a twisty adventure that keeps you on your toes throughout its runtime, turning Baron into a methodical but sympathetic anti-hero that highlights an all-too-common issue with the pharmaceutical industry in the United States.

Gene Hackman and Nick Nolte are two of Hollywood's most prolific, recognizable actors with enduring acting careers. From being voted by his classmates at California's Pasadena Playhouse as "the least likely to succeed" alongside his classmate and fellow Academy Award-winning actor Dustin Hoffman, Hackman has proved his naive, formative judges wrong by gracing the screen at the highest possible level for over six decades. During his decorated career, he won two Oscars—Best Actor for his performance in William Friedkin's The French Connection and Best Supporting Actor for his role in Clint Eastwood's Western Unforgiven — along with numerous nominations, which include his springboard role in the revolutionary 1967 crime movie classic Bonnie and Clyde. Hackman teamed up with fellow Academy-recognized Nolte for the beautiful, underseen, and intense 1983 guerrilla war film Under Fire. A fictional story based on true events, Under Fire provides an opportunity for movie lovers to explore...

Back in August, it was announced that Stargirl star Brec Bassinger, who also has a lead role in the upcoming, long-awaited Final Destination sequel Final Destination: Bloodlines (a.k.a. Final Destination 6), had signed on to star in the supernatural coming-of-age thriller The Evilry, with her co-stars set to include Elena Kampouris (Children of the Corn), Dylan Walsh (Superman & Lois), Marissa Reyes (Ganymede), Evan Ross (The Loneliest Boy in the World), Tony Pierce (The Bodyguard), and Teri Polo (the Meet the Parents franchise). In September, we learned that Billy Zane (Dead Calm) had joined the cast. And now, Deadline has broken the news that three-time Oscar nominee (and one time winner) Faye Dunaway also has a role in The Evilry!

‘Days of Our Lives’ (Dool) spoilers for Tuesday, October 1 reveal Bobbie Lockhart (Judi Evans) gets bad news. Meanwhile, the Body and Soul team try to keep things moving. Plus, Stephanie Johnson (Abigail Klein) opens up to Jada Hunter (Elia Cantu). Here’s what you need to know.
‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers For Tuesday, October 1: Goodbye…
First, ‘Days of Our Lives’ spoilers reveal some confusion on our part. See, Kate Dimera (Lauren Koslow) wasn’t happy about Hattie Adams (Deidre Hall) issuing that ultimatum.
In fact, she told Abe Carver (James Reynolds) it would set a bad precedent if they let her get away with that. But, we saw Bonnie’s character is being killed off anyway. Poor Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart) had to break the news.
The drama won’t end there, though. Bonnie’s week gets worse as Hattie rubs in what’s happened. We can just picture it now.

As we creep along to the midway point of Summer, this can only mean one thing at the multiplex (aside from added matinees): another installment of a big studio franchise (formerly a series) will be occupying several screens. We’ve already had a new Alien, and another Depp pirate pic as the Planet Apes and Transformers wait in the wings, along with that wall-crawling wonder. I suppose we’re due for an animated sequel, but this one’s from the most celebrated studio of the last couple of decades, Pixar. Aside from Toy Story, they avoided follow-ups to their other hit films until 2011 when the Cars gang refueled for Cars 2. Then one of the other hits got a prequel, Monster University, and another spawned last year’s box office smash, Finding Dory. Now here’s the automotive, track-burnin’ “hat trick” as good ole’ number 95, Lightning McQueen roars back...

Disney's upcoming animated film Zootopia looks like it's going to a ridiculously funny and entertaining film. I got to see some footage from it at D23 this past summer, and I thought the stuff that the studio shared was great.
The voice cast for the film originally included Jason Bateman, Ginnifer Goodwin, and Shakira. Now, thanks to USA Today, we have some information on the rest of the voice cast and the characters that they will be playing. We even have images and information for each of those characters. But first, here's the synopsis:
The modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia is a city like no other. Comprised of habitat neighborhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. Before we hit the Emmy Awards one last group poll. I asked friends which Emmy nominated TV characters mix and matched from different series would they love to see paired up?

Or: Queen Cersei (Lena Headey) gets sent to Litchfield prison and insults Red's (Kate Mulgrew) cooking on her first day. Delicious scheming and sassy put-downs ensue. And I really want to see Allison Janney and Julie Bowen's characters from Mom and Modern Family get drinks together, just because.

Trish Bendix isn’t happy with how Faking It ended its first season. Bendix writes in The Hollywood Reporter that the ending destroys Faking It‘s credibility in handling lesbian characters. (Spoilers await you at the link.)
Just hours before debuting the fifth season, ABC Family ordered two more seasons of Pretty Little Liars. That will keep the campy horror soap on the air until 2016. With seven seasons, I believe that should make it ABC Family’s longest-running series.
I’m still hoping it turns out they really are getting texts from Hillary.
Does the timing of the Game of Thrones finale hint at a major spoiler from the books? (Again, it’s a major spoiler, so click at your own risk.)

Films such as Lincoln revitalised the genre by focusing on short periods, but are too many made, too soon?
For a genre that's been dismissed so many times, the biopic is in impertinently rude health. In the past six months in the UK – and only counting the ones about major public figures – we've had Behind the Candelabra, Renoir, Lovelace, Rush, Diana, Hannah Arendt, The Fifth Estate, One Chance, Saving Mr Banks, Kill Your Darlings, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. The next few weeks alone will grant us audiences with Solomon Northup (12 Years a Slave), Charles Dickens (The Invisible Woman) and Grace of Monaco.
Somewhere down the line, though, the biopic tightened up its act. The Mandela picture's cradle-to-the-grave trudge looks positively old-fashioned now; even 12 Years a Slave is a bit copperplate. The new-school, high-definition biopic goes for the essence, rather than a chronicle of events, focusing on a galvanising...

Exclusive: Storyline Entertainment partners Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have signed on with The Weinstein Company to produce Pippin, the screen adaptation of the musical that recently won Best Revival of a Musical among a four-Tony Award haul. This puts Zadan and Meron back with Weinstein, with whom they most successfully teamed on Chicago, the 2002 screen adaptation that won Best Picture among six Oscars. The duo also produced the hit movie musical Hairspray. With book by Roger O. Hirson and music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Pippin originally launched in 1972 with Bob Fosse directing. It focused on the existential journey of the title character, a son of King Charlemagne trying to find his place in the Middle Ages. The Spectacular Now helmer James Ponsoldt is writing the screenplay adaptation of Pippin. So yes, Kanye West has made a music video with a topless Kim Kardashian, fiancée and mother-of-his-child and free-floating symbol for the dystopia our lives have become. And yes, the music video — set to “Bound 2,” the extremely heartfelt and totally weird love song that ends Yeezus — is about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian riding a motorcycle in front of green-screen images of Monument Valley and space, which makes it look a little bit like a ’70s biker-gang Roger Corman movie shot inside of an iMac screensaver. And yes, you could argue that this music video is basically a softcore porno...

If comedy has a Dorothy Parker, it’s Caroline Hirsch. The nightclub that bears her name on Broadway at the north end of Times Square is her salon, and for more than 30 years now, Carolines has been hosting the funniest and most famous stand-up comedians. From Jerry Seinfeld to Dave Chappelle to Louis Ck and Tracy Morgan, Carolines has been more than a prime showcase for the most hilarious people alive — it’s a room every comic has to conquer in order make his or her bones in the business.
Hirsch will be the first to admit that she herself isn’t funny.

Kate Middleton and Prince William will become parents within days to their much anticipated new baby son or daughter. But what’s extra exciting is that they will forever change the face of royal parenthood as the most hands-on royal parents ever!
Kate Middleton‘s official due date is July 11 and when she goes into labor, Prince William – the future king of England will be in the delivery room!
Prince William & Kate Middleton Will Be Hands-On Parents
Prince William is as excited as any non-Royal father-to-be about the birth of his first baby. And no matter which sex the baby is, that baby will become The heir to the throne — the first time in British history that a first-born daughter would become Queen, even if she later has a younger male sibling.

Justin, when you set your mind to winning back the woman who owns your heart — you go more all out than any man I’ve ever seen. This singing tactic could work!
Justin Bieber, you are making the most public display of “wooing” a woman – Selena Gomez – since Romeo romanced Juliet on her balcony!
Justin Bieber Performing ‘Take You’ For Selena Gomez
When you sing your love song, “Take You,” at the Billboard Awards on May 19, you will be crooning directly to Selena, who is also performing at the awards show.
She’ll be there, possibly sitting front row watching your performance, at the same time as all of your and Selena’s fans, who are tuning in to the show.
Justin, this is a really bold, romantic move and the culmination of your long campaign to win Selena back after she left you “for good” during your Christmas vacation together.

“We had a terrific season last year, growing our audience on-air, digitally, and socially. Now we are building on that success by continuing to add more original programming all year long and by adding high-concept, exciting shows to our schedule that will help us continue our mission of broadening out our 18-to-34-year old audience,” said Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW. “‘Arrow’ was one of the breakout hits of this season, and we’re using that show and ‘The Vampire Diaries,’ our two highest-rated series, to launch our new dramas ‘The Tomorrow People’ and ‘Reign,’ on Wednesday and Thursday nights. This week’s ‘Vampire Diaries’ set the stage for some hard times in the Big Easy. If The CW doesn’t pick up this spin-off, it would be a crime against television.
I don’t think we’re in Mystic Falls anymore, Toto! The April 25 episode of The Vampire Diaries — aka the back-door pilot for The Originals, which I’m crossing my fingers for harder than ever — introduced us to the “dark side” of New Orleans, where Klaus’ (Joseph Morgan) former protege Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) rules the roost. You know, when he’s not rocking the karaoke mic. But Klaus and Marcel’s buddy-buddy routine fell to pieces as Klaus became resentful of his former Bff, and vowed to steal back his kingdom.
But because no Mikaelson family reunion would be complete without everyone’s favorite hair, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) showed up just in time to kill a few...

I was trying to figure out what genre Steven Spielberg's The Sugarland Express fits in while preparing today's Movie Club entry. It's definitely got drama as Lou Jean (Goldie Hawn), an ex-con, convinces her husband Clovis (William Atherton) to break out of pre-release four months before he's due to be released free and clear. Their goal is to make a run for Sugarland, Texas where they hope to get their child out of foster care, a child that was removed from their custody due to the misdemeanors that landed them in prison. These two eventually hit the road by hitching a ride with an elderly couple, but the fact the old man won't drive any faster than 30 miles an hour on the freeway results in them stealing the car. An incredible and rewarding work of art that’s improved with age.
About a year ago, Disney produced 3D conversions of both Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King for Blu-ray. The latter was re-released in theaters for two weeks as part of the home video promotion. Unexpectedly, it did gangbusters at the box-office, even taking the number one spot for two consecutive weekends ahead of new releases. Not bad for a seventeen year old film. Sensing there was more money to be made, Disney came up with a new game plan. Even though the 3D version of Beauty was on store shelves, they would re-release it in theaters as well that January. Makes sense, since the average household doesn’t have a blu-ray player in their home theater, let alone 3D capability. Future re-releases would include, The Little Mermaid and Monsters, Inc., as a tie-in to its sequel...

This story is about a woman who sacrificed the spotlight to help her family survive, and has been given the chance to take center stage with her very own record deal more than 20 years later! -– Marlo, MarloThomas.com

Dan: As great as it was meeting the other originals, my favorite scene had to be when Klaus first welcomed the Salvatores to his dinner party. He was slyly making a mockery of their little get together,...
