John Cleese had a choice of playing Zazu in Il re leone (1994) or Jean-Bob in this film. He chose to play Jean-Bob because he felt this character was more interesting.
Director Richard Rich originally pitched the idea for this film at Walt Disney Studios while he was working there, but the idea was rejected.
