Jodie Foster's $223M Thriller Flightplan Soars on Netflix 20 Years Later
Image
Jodie Foster's psychological thriller is a Netflix streaming hit 20 years after release, when it grossed $223 million at the worldwide box office.

Foster won an Oscar for the 1988 legal drama The Accused, then won a second for 1991’s psychological horror thriller Silence of the Lambs. The star followed up those twin triumphs by spending the 1990s taking multiple different genres for a spin.

There was the costume drama Sommersby, teaming Foster with Richard Gere. She did Western-comedy alongside Mel Gibson in Maverick, then played a scientist in the sci-fi drama Contact. She wound up the decade in another costume film, playing one of the two title characters in Anna and the King of Siam.

Foster’s 1990s genre tour interestingly saw her avoiding thrillers, perhaps because she was hesitant to play another character similar to Lambs’ Clarice Starling. But her thriller-aversion went away in 2002, when she took the lead in David Fincher’s Panic Room,...

This Serial Killer Thriller With a 'Starfleet Academy' Star Is Still Stalking Up the Streaming Charts
Image
A 1995 serial killer thriller continues to have surprising success on the streaming charts. 1995's Copycat, starring Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter as a pair of women on the trail of a killer, is holding steady at #9 on Netflix's Top Ten. The film was one of a spate of serial killer-based movies that hit the multiplexes in the wake of 1991's smash hit The Silence of the Lambs. There's no readily apparent explanation for the movie's ascent in the charts: perhaps streaming viewers simply yearn to be back in a Clinton Administration-era Blockbuster outlet.

The script was co-written by Ann Biderman, who would go on to create the TV series Southlandand Ray Donovan, and originally featured a male and a female lead; director Jon Amiel, coming off the Richard Gere-Jodie Foster romance Sommersby, felt there was a void for female-led thrillers, and had one role rewritten for an actress. Due...

Jodie Foster Confirms She Rejected a Major ‘Star Wars’ Role
Image
Jodie Foster is undoubtedly one of the biggest female stars in Hollywood. The actress made a name for herself by playing the young prostitute Iris Steensma in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, after having appeared in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore two years prior. But, while her filmography includes some important titles like The Accused (1988), Sommersby (1993), Maverick (1994), Contact (1997), Anna and the King (1999), Panic Room (2002), Flightplan (2005), Inside Man (2006), The Brave One (2007), Nim’s Island (2008), Carnage (2011), Elysium (2013), The Mauritanian (2021), and Nyad (2023), her best-known role is that of Clarice Starling in The Silence of the Lambs, which also brought her her second Oscar. Recently, she also appeared in True Detective: Night Country.

But, while she has definitely gathered a large number of major roles, she has also – as you might have assumed – rejected and lost several other major roles, and from what we know now, one of these roles was a major Star Wars role.

Hulu New Releases: December 2023
Image
It’s an interesting month ahead on Hulu, as the streamer rolls out some of the series it’s been keeping in its back pocket for the holiday season.

On December 15, the first season of Such Brave Girls will arrive. The sitcom follows a dysfunctional family – and we mean dysfunctional! – that includes real-life sisters Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson. British comedian Sadler has previously written for The News Quiz, Hypothetical, and Mel Giedroyc: Unforgivable, but this is her first big TV project. “Everything we joke about in the show is from a place of lived experience,” she told Funny Women. “I wish I could say this is a heart-warming show about overcoming trauma, but that would be a lie. It’s about three toxic, damaged egomaniacs manipulating the world and each other for their own personal gain, vengeance and glory…just like in Little Women.” Sounds good!

Later in the month,...

Last Action Hero Deserves Credit For Creating A Blockbuster Multiverse Before The MCU
Image
It's hard to imagine now, but there was a time when most people in the world probably didn't know — or care — what a "multiverse" is. And that time was just a few years ago, when the idea of an infinite number of alternate realities was mostly relegated to complex sci-fi stories and sprawling comic book continuities.

But that was then and this is now, and now is when the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has introduced the idea that not only are there multiple different versions of their heroes in multiple different universes, but also that every other movie featuring those characters — even the films that supposedly aren't "canon" — are just different parts of the multiverse. It's all connected, every part of it. Toss in the Spider-Verse too, because why not? It's all connected.

Heck, multiverses are so mainstream now that a complex independent film like "Everything Everywhere All At Once...

Danny Elfman’s Score For Justice League Set To Drop On November 10
WaterTower Music is proud to announce the November 10 release of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to Warner Bros. Pictures’ epic action adventure Justice League. The album features one of the industry’s most versatile and accomplished film composers, Danny Elfman, who is returning to score a DC Super Hero film for the first time since 1992’s Batman Returns.

While bringing his celebrated and unique approach to the Justice League score, Elfman also gives DC fans some special familiar moments. Utilizing memorable character themes to tell the musical story, he incorporates and re-interprets iconic music from past films, including John Williams’ Superman theme, Hans Zimmer’s Wonder Woman theme, and his own Batman theme. “I’m using the same thematic material that I used back then,” Elfman told Billboard Magazine. “It never actually went away. We’ve got these iconic bits from our past and that’s part of us, that’s part of our heritage.

'Nashville Recap': Juliette Gets Her Groove, Rayna Makes a Pricey Move
Grumpy Cat
This week on Nashville, there was seemingly no problem that neither money nor misogyny couldn't solve.

The episode opens with Rayna calling Deacon from her private jet, telling him that she's off to find a new distribution deal. What she's really up to is trying to convince Deacon's estranged sister, Beverly, to cough up a liver for her brother. Through a series of flashbacks we learn that Beverly and Deacon's singing partnership was derailed by Rayna coming into the picture and that Beverly's jealousy runs deep. We also learn that...

The AfterEllen.com Huddle: Jodie Foster's best role
Tags: AfterEllen.com HuddleJodie FosterThe AfterEllen.com HuddleIMDb

No matter what you thought of Jodie Foster's Golden Globes speech, you have to admit the woman is an all-star actress. She's been in more than 40 films and over 25 TV series, so it was hard to decide what her best role ever could be. It wasn't hard, though, to discuss how good she was in every single one.

Group, what's your favorite Jodie Foster film?

Dorothy Snarker: I absolutely, positively cannot pick just one because she was my very first crush. So there. Rules be damned. For sentimental reasons, Stealing Home because it came out during my formative years and I watched it on a seemingly endless loop on our family's contraband HBO feed. Those blue eyes mesmerized me. For action reasons, Flightplan because she took a role originally written for a male lead and helped to, again, show that women...

British successes at Golden Globes put in shade by Jodie Foster's 'coming out'
Actor uses awards ceremony speech to make first public utterance about her sexuality, an open secret in Hollywood

There was unexpected British success at night's Golden Globes awards, but the ceremony was overshadowed by an extraordinary acceptance speech by actor Jodie Foster, in which she "came out" in front of the massed Hollywood glitterati.

The 50-year-old actor, in attendance to collect a lifetime achievement award, stunned the audience by announcing midway through her speech: "I have a sudden urge to say something that I've never really been able to air in public."

She went on to thank "one of the deepest loves of my life, my heroic co-parent, my ex-partner in love but righteous soul sister in life, my confessor, ski buddy, consigliere, most beloved Bff of 20 years, Cydney Bernard".

Foster's longterm relationship with former partner Bernard had been an open secret for years. They met in 1992 when Bernard worked...

Who Is Jodie Foster's Former Partner?
Jodie Foster
Jodie Foster not only confirmed she's gay while accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at Sunday night's Golden Globe Awards -- she announced she's single.

Though they are no longer together, Foster publicly thanked her former partner and mother to her two sons Charlie and Kit, Cydney Bernard. While many are considering Foster's speech last night to be her official coming out, she's publicly spoken about Bernard before. According to The Wrap, while accepting an award at the Women in Entertainment Breakfast in 2007, the actress thanked "my beautiful Cydney, who sticks with me through all the rotten and the bliss."

The former couple met on the set of the 1993 film "Sommersby," where Bernard -- now a producer-- was working as a production coordinator.

In 2008, it was reported that the two broke things off, ending their 15-year-relationship.

Foster is very protective of her privacy and has not spoken about the breakup.

Jodie Foster Comes Out As A Lesbian During Golden Globes Speech
When Jodie took to the stage to accept her Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes on Jan. 13 she gave a shocking yet beautiful speech about why she felt now was the time to reveal that she is a lesbian. The entire crowd was in tears as Jodie spoke and she begged for her mother to understand her public admission.

Jodie Foster is such an inspiration. The 50-year-old actress told the millions of viewers at home and celebrities in the audience of the 70th annual Golden Globes that yes, she is a lesbian and she’s thrilled to be coming out and not hiding this any longer.

Jodie’s Emotional Golden Globes Speech

“A big coming out speech tonight,” she said. “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago in the stone age. Back in the days when a fragile young girl would open up to...

Billy Eichner Talks "Billy on the Street," Joan Rivers, and Infuriating Spike Lee
Comedian Billy Eichner's pedestrian-attacking presence on the Fuse's Billy on the Street is not just funny, it's constantly jarring -- and extraordinary and life-affirming that way.

The gonzo game show combines Eichner's abrupt comic timing, love of pop culture, and tiny cash prizes. It capitalizes on his signature stage delirium, the style that the The New York Times once called "a theatrical phenomenon" in reviewing his 2005 fake late night talk show Creation Nation. Since then, his "Man on the Street" Q&As joined Funny Or Die's clip roster, and that recognition earned him his Fuse show. Since he's still shooting the show's new season, we thought we'd catch up with the delirious comic and discuss his friend Joan Rivers, his new enemy Spike Lee, and what it feels like to bombard Super Bowl-winning football players with questions about Madonna. Follow him on Twitter at @billyeichner and watch Billy on...

Danny Elfman’s Dark Shadows Original Score To Be Released May 8
WaterTower Music will release Dark Shadows . Original Score digitally and in stores on May 8, 2012. The album features original music by Grammy Award-winning and four-time Oscar®-nominated composer Danny Elfman, which is featured in director Tim Burton’s new gothic comedy Dark Shadows.

For more than 25 years, Burton and Elfman have collaborated on some of the cinema’s most beloved and recognizable films and soundtracks, including Big Fish, for which Elfman received an Oscar® nomination; Beetlejuice; Batman; Edward Scissorhands; Sleepy Hollow; Corpse Bride; and, more recently, Alice in Wonderland.

“Tim had some specific ideas about the music on Dark Shadows,” says Elfman. “I knew that the bigger dramatic scenes would be played in a rather grand theatrical manner, but the real treat was tapping into the retro pallet Tim had imagined. He wanted something that payed homage to both the original TV series and other ’70s horror genres as well. For that we kept it minimal,...

David Thomson on Jodie Foster
On May 20(it is promised), Jodie Foster's new film, The Beaver – the first she has directed since Home for the Holidays (1995) – will be released in the Us. The trailer tries to propose that it is a comedy and/or a heartwarming treat, but one early viewer observes on a website that it is an uncommonly dark experience (and a "must see"). There seem to be two problems, or maybe three. The first is that the film's central character, Walter, is suffering a severe depression that threatens his job and his family life. The second is that Walter is played by Mel Gibson, possibly the most disapproved-of person in entertainment these days. And third? Well, judging from the trailer, I'd say that Gibson looks all too plausible as a depressive.

The picture's opening has been delayed several times already, in part because of the unceasing ugly publicity Gibson has gathered.

Exclusive: Jon Amiel Discusses the Birth of Creation
The director of this new Charles Darwin biopic discusses this new period film, his new film Undying and much more.

Director Jon Amiel is certainly a director who likes to try something different with each film he undertakes. His films such as the period piece Sommersby, the real-time thriller Copycat, the comedy The Man Who Knew Too Little, the summer action film Entrapment and the bio-disaster The Core are about as different as they come, from one film to the next. After spending some time directing for the small screen, Amiel returned to the big screen with Creation, the biopic of famed the evolution revolutionary Charles Darwin, which just hit the shelves on DVD today, June 29. I had the chance to speak with this diverse director over the phone about his latest film, and here's what he had to say.

Obviously, I'm a writer, so I've never been a big...

When will Richard Gere stop?
Memorable roles in American Gigolo and An Officer And A Gentleman seem a long time ago

Allow me to favour you with a little movie list. Try to guess what they have in common and I'll meet you in paragraph two: No Mercy, Power, Miles From Home, Mr Jones, Final Analysis, Sommersby, Intersection, King David, Red Corner, The Jackal, Red Corner, The Mothman Prophecies, Unfaithful, Shall We Dance, Amelia.

I know, I know: it looks like the Razzie Winners' display at some bleak video store in the sixth circle of Hell, or perhaps the entire directorial oeuvre of Alan Smithee handily quarantined to prevent them from infecting the poor innocent DVDs on neighbouring shelves. But let me straighten you out: they all star one Richard Tiffany Gere, who can be seen this week in another of his patented misfires, Brooklyn's Finest.

Many times have I – while in my torrid cups or during the violent,...

Exclusive Cs Video: Creation Director Jon Amiel
The story behind the writing of Charles Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" might not sound like the most exciting basis for a movie, but in the hands of Jon Amiel, the director of such diverse movies as Entrapment and Sommersby , that story is told in a clever visual way in the new movie Creation , starring Paul Bettany as Darwin and Jennifer Connelly as his loving wife Emma. Loosely based on the novel "Annie's Box" by Darwin's great-great grandson Randall Keynes, Creation covers the many years Darwin spent researching and writing his most famous work while also dealing with the death of 10-year-old daughter Annie to a disease that seems to be afflicting him as well. At the same time, he finds himself in conflict with his religious wife who refuses to...

Minority View: Sommersby by Jon Amiel
Sometimes the most interesting thing about a film is that it is an intelligent remake of another film from another culture. Last week I wrote about Daniel Vigne's The Return of Martin Guerre, which can be said to belong to European art cinema because of its ambiguity. This film was remade by Hollywood as Sommersby in 1993 and an examination of the film shows how Hollywood tailors European cinema to suits own purpose. Where European art cinema explores the fluid nature of human identity and character Sommersby celebrates character in a way that only American films can...
