The film is loosely based on the life of Polish actress Elzbieta Czyzewska, who had trouble establishing herself as an actress in New York after fleeing her homeland. She made a comeback after the film's release, winning an Obie Award for her performance in the play "Crowbar," and appearing in movies like Vivere in fuga (1988) and Music Box - Prova d'accusa (1989).
The film was Oscar nominated for one Academy Award in 1988 for Sally Kirkland in the category of Best Actress in a Leading Role with the gong being won in the end by Cher for 'Moonstruck' (1987).
Actress Paulina Porizkova married Ric Ocasek of 'The Cars'. His band-mate Greg Hawkes composed the music score for this film.
