Out of all of the band, the only one who could play guitar and sing was Britta Phillips. Before this movie, she was the singing voice of "Jem" on the cartoon series Jem e le Holograms (1985).
Liam Neeson has said he took this role just after filming Suspect - Presunto colpevole (1987), where he played a mute derelict, just to be in the sunshine around pretty girls. He admitted he still has not seen the film.
The title was changed to "Girls Of Summer" for the film's television debut, ostensibly to fool viewers who had already seen the film or perhaps because it was a dud at the box office. The Turner Classic Movies website states that the film was "retitled 'Girls of Summer' for early 1991 network broadcast". Around the time the film premiered on television, Julia Roberts had already become a breakout star in the film Pretty Woman (1990). NBC would capitalize on this in their ads proclaiming, "Before she was a pretty woman, she was one of the Girls of Summer".
