Although the film is set in California, the script was inspired by a real incident that occurred in late 1970s Detroit about a woman who stopped a rape and then was arrested for not having a gun permit.

According to a review published in the 28th March 1984 edition of show-business trade-paper 'Variety', the name "Edward Victor" was a collective pseudonym for Eduardo Palmos, Victor Ordoñez, and Al Valletta.
