Epic Pictures is releasing both Val and Bad Candy this Tuesday, while Dark Sky Pictures is releasing the indie thriller Coming Home in the Dark on both Blu-ray and DVD. Other releases for November 9th include Mania Killer, Dead Fury: Unrated, and The Resonator: Miskatonic U.

August’s home media offerings are wrapping up in a big way this week, and I hope you’ve got your wallets ready because there are a ton of releases that genre fans are going to want to add to their collections. Fulci fans should be excited for the arrival of both The House by the Cemetery and The New York Ripper in 4K, courtesy of Blue Underground, and Severin is having their own Fulci fiesta this week, too, with their releases of Aenigma, Demonia as well as the recent documentary Fulci for Fake.

Scream Factory also has a killer lineup of titles headed home on Tuesday, including the Collector’s Edition of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie and the Universal Horror Collection: Volume 6.

Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for August 25th include Dead Pit, The Beast Must Die, The Last Victim, Live Feed, Gemini, Hallucinations, and Alien Scum.

It is truly amazing how crowded the zombie market was in the early ‘80s, at least in Europe; after the success of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978) begat Lucio Fulci’s unofficial “sequel” Zombie (’79), the floodgates were opened and the undead made their (slow and shuffling) move at the box office. Amidst the barrage was one Burial Ground (1981), a film that boils down a zombie flick to its very essence: people get munched, and they get munched good. Forget social subtext; Burial Ground barely has text.

Aka The Night of Terrors, Burial Ground was released on its home turf of Italy in the summer, with the U.S. not receiving a release until late ’85 before dropping on video in early ’86. As horror fans, we are constantly seeking out the new and the different. Because the genre is marked by so much sameness—sequels, franchises, remakes, copies of copies—it can sometimes be a challenge to find those horror films that truly carve out their own space. They don’t even have to be great movies, necessarily; many times, “different” is enough to make us happy.

With that in mind, here are 10 horror movies currently available on the terrific streaming service Shudder that are, if nothing else, different from almost anything else you’ll watch this October. They vary in quality from title to title, but what even the roughest among them lacks in technical polish, it more than makes up for in sheer maniac insanity. I really enjoy a good number of his films but recognize he’s churned out some real clunkers, especially the period immediately after 1987’s Faceless. The reputation of Killer Barbys was less than stellar with even hard-core Franco fans generally dismissing the film. So it was that I received a screener from Kino Lorber and popped the Blu-ray in. For this final Tuesday in October (and the last day of home entertainment releases prior to Halloween), horror fans have a bunch of great new Blu-rays and DVDs coming out just in time for everyone’s favorite holiday. Scream Factory has given The Exorcist III an HD overhaul (including the original Director’s Cut of the sequel), which is something no genre lover will want to miss out on experiencing. Arrow Video is also keeping busy on October 25th with the release of their impressive 17-disc box set celebrating trailblazing filmmaker Herschell Gordon Lewis, and the recent supernatural thriller Lights Out is making its way to Blu-ray and DVD as well.

"When the moon turns red the dead shall rise" in 1981's Burial Ground, coming out on Blu-ray and DVD from Severin Films later this fall.

ComingSoon.net announced that the folks at Severin Films will release Burial Ground on Blu-ray and DVD this October 25th. The new release will feature a 2K restoration of the Italian zombie movie as well as several extras. A separate DVD release will also be available, as well as a limited edition Blu-ray (of only 3,000 items) with alternative artwork by Wes Benscoter (see third image below).

Those who order directly from Severin Films' website will receive a 12x18 poster, and fans can also seek out Severin Films' special Nights of Terror bundle comprised of the special edition Blu-ray, the poster, enamel pin, T-shirt, and shot glass.

Usually it wouldn’t bode well for a film when a) it has a generic title like Vampires; and b) when you discover it’s actual title is Bloodless, the very opposite of what you want from a vampire movie… Give me flesh-tearing vampires ripping people apart anyday thanks! But, all prejudices aside, I was still willing to give this British scary movie a shot – mainly in part to one of the films stars, Victoria Hopkins, and its producer, Steve O’Brien. Both names whom you probably aren’t that familiar with but both of whom worked on Zombie Women of Satan. A film who – even to this day – it seems like I’m the only fan of (that was certainly the case after its screening at Frightfest in 2009).

Matteiofthedead returns with Malabimba: The Malicious Whore, some good old fashioned Italian sleaze from the infamous Andrea Bianchi (Strip Nude For Your Killer, Burial Ground). This effort is his take on the possession genre. The film in question is Malabimba, a tale of a young (oh yes folks) girl possessed by an evil and and horny spirit.

One of the most fondly remembered eras in fright-film history is the golden age of Italian gore – a prolific period that brought such directors as Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava and Lucio Fulci to international attention and acclaim. Spawning all number of surreal sub-genres, including black-gloved killer-thrillers and stomach-churning cannibal adventures, this is a time that continues to crib a fresh generation of fascinated fans.

Earlier this week we paid a visit to Dr. Terror's Blog of Horrors for a segment entitled “8 Bits From Hell,” in which Dr. Terror worked with artist and graphic designer Frank Browning (already a FEARnet fave for his work on all those horror ice cream flavors) and electronic musician Sean O'Connor to design vintage-style packaging, screenshots, instructions and 8-bit musical themes for imaginary early '90s-era Nes games that horror fans would have totally killed to possess. At that time we showcased a sweet game mockup based on Lucio Fulci's 1979 classic Zombie, but as we mentioned, that was only one of many splatter flicks to get the 8-bit treatment. Italy has frequently been at the forefront of European cinema as a trendsetter in the annals of exploitation cinema. Without Italy, we wouldn’t have the Mondo film or Gialli. Who else would have supplied us with Amazonian cannibals, nasty Nazis or demented nuns in such a pleasing manner?

Italy has always been awash with cinematic talent. And it is a country that doesn’t mind doing sexy, doing off beat, to be a little daring. The amount of wonderful exploitation directors has ensured that Italy has produced some of the most amazing horror films, cult oddities, documentaries and pornos.

1981 gave us Andrea Bianchi’s Italian gore-fest, Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror. Notable for its near total lack of plot and bloody zombie breast-feeding scene, Burial Ground: The Nights of Terror, aka The Zombie Dead, starts with zombies snacking on a bearded professorial-type and ends with a bunch of zombies munching on a group of over-sexed couples. For the week of March 27th, sleaze fans are fortunate to have two gialli hitting store shelves from amazing companies Blue Underground and Mondo Macabro. If you read my post on day one of the 9th Fantastic Films Weekend that took place in Bradford last weekend, you’ll know how impressed I was with the lectures given on the first day as part of the TimeCode series of lectures by Bradford University. The talks, held under the ‘Fantasma’ banner, were on a variety of subjects – from British Sex Cinema, to The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue, to Italian Horror Cinema… and it’s the Italian Horror Cinema lecture that I managed to captured in it’s entirety (a full 40 minutes) and have embedded for you delectation below.

The lecture is by ‘Independent Academic’ Russ Hunter, and covers a wide range of Italian Horror, and offers a historical perspective on a much maligned sub-genre – the lecture also featured video of a disemboweling from Zombie Holocaust or the infamous breast-chomping scene from Burial Ground, aka Nights of Terror,...

Today marked the start of the 9th Fantastic Films Weekend at the National Media Museum in Bradford, West Yorkshire and despite some teething problems, both technical and personnel, I’d say the opening day was a hit.

The main part of today’s festivities was taken up by Fantasma, a special symposium on horror featuring lectures from I.Q. Hunter, David Robinson, Russ Hunter and Jeremy Dyson (who you may know from The League of Gentlemen). The highlight of these lectures were the talks given by I.Q. Hunter and Russ Hunter (no relation).

I.Q. Hunter’s talk on British Sex Films covered the gamut of British exploitation cinema, from the more mainstream Confessions… movies to lesser known films such as Permissive. Judging by his talk, Hunter seems to have taken up the reigns laid down by filmmaker and critic David McGillivray, who is seen as the premiere spokesperson...

Ah March… the sun is shining, the trees are greening and people from all over the world are about to invade our fair city for SXSW and give us their money. You gotta love the few weeks of spring we get in Texas. Pretty soon it’s going to be hot as balls. Sure, it’ll drop down to 35 probably at some point, but worry not, it’ll be 80 the next day.If you haven’t been into the theater since last week, we put our new Spring Menu Specials up! They are crazy tasty, and come highly recommended from everyone at Alamo HQ. Some of those specials are for the big opener this weekend, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland In 3D! I’ve loved Tim Burton for years, and I love Alamo feasts, so you can find me at the Alice Five-course Feast next Wednesday.

It’s time for another update on horror-film screenings for the Halloween 2009 season and beyond; you can track back through our previous items starting here. The most exciting news is the addition of a very special show to the Scary Movies 3 series currently unspooling at New York City’s Lincoln Center: Trick ’R Treat with Michael Dougherty (pictured) in attendance!

The All Hallow’s anthology feature unspools at the Walter Reade Theater (165 West 65th Street, upper level) this Wednesday, October 21 at 8:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A with Dougherty.
