The series originally aired as a pilot in October 1983 as "Trick Or Treat" starring Barnard Hughes. Apparently, this was before it became "Tales From The Darkside". The original broadcast wasn't intended as a episode of it until the "Tales From The Darkside" intro was tacked on future repeats of it.
Famed horror writer Stephen King contributed two stories to the series: "Word Processor of the Gods" and "Sorry, Right Number". Both have subsequently been reprinted in the author's anthology works.
Vic Tayback appeared in the first ("The New Man") and final ("Basher Malone") episodes of the series.
When the series was eventually released to DVD, fans were disappointed to discover that the original soundtrack scores in the background of each show had been replaced with a modern synthesized keyboard track instead. This has to do with licensing; the company releasing the DVDs was unable to secure the rights to the original music, and had to replace it. The only known existing copy of the shows with the original soundtrack included were VHS rips in four separate pirate torrents, most of which ran out of seeders and leechers after the DVD versions made their way to torrent websites. It's unknown if the original shows with their soundtrack were archived or destroyed.
The show was canceled after 4 seasons because of declining ratings even though season 1 and 2 were a success in ratings but by season 3 and 4 ratings started to decline and they felt the series had run its course so the show was canceled after four seasons.
