The sound is pure 80's with the punchy and familiar distorted electric guitar. Occassionally, a synthesizer will appear on the track. When I rented the movie in 1983, I recorded the music (along with some of the dialogue) onto an audio tape... which I still listen to today. Fortunately, I also discovered that Michael Nesmith has a web-site where both the video and the soundtrack can be found. I think I'll purchase both... since it has been nearly 20 years since I've seen the movie.
This is a classic movie for the music alone.
While the movie passes the time acceptably, at the same time I couldn't help but feel that the screenwriters didn't punch up the script enough. The bad guys are for the most part brutal thugs, and the reason for the chief bad guy wanting the motorbike is never revealed. The hero is also weak - we don't get to see much of him before he's transported back in time, and he seems mighty slow to figure out he's been transported back in time. And the movie doesn't take much opportunity for the modern day hero to use what he has and what he knows on these backward people.
Overall, the movie is worth watching, though when you aren't feeling that demanding. It also helps if you like westerns.
Look at "Timerider". Great idea (moto-cross racer Ward inadvertently rides through a time travel experiment that lands him back in the Old West, circa 1870), but once Ward comes upon an Old West town, that's where things kind of slow down to a crawl.
At least the cowboys are smart enough to realize something's wrong. A gang of cowboys shoot at a revving motorcycle, they think Ward in all his moto-cross gear is some kind of demon and no one knows what an Exxon station is. You'd think Ward would get the message, but no. He even gets to know a woman (Bauer) whom he doesn't understand his connected with until the very last scene.
Thank goodness for pros like Coyote, Masur, Lauter and Walter; they help keep things lively and interesting for a while. Even good old L.Q. Jones shows up as a Texas Ranger to add some spice to the proceedings.
I won't say too much more about the movie. Indeed, there are some scenes here that are best left experienced by the individual. But for the most part, being a veteran of the "Back to the Future" series, I was left wanting.
Who knows, Hollywood says they're running out of ideas for sequels....
Two stars. Nice try, but this "Timerider" stays lost in time.

- QuizLyle Swann goes back in time to November 5th, 1877. The same "time travel arrival date" was used in Ritorno al futuro (1985) (November 5th, 1955) and L'uomo venuto dall'impossibile (1979) (November 5th, 1979).
- BlooperAfter Reese is mangled by the chopper's tail rotor, we get another full shot of the aircraft as it lands to pick up Lyle. However the rotor section looks undisturbed and void of any human flesh. It should be blood splattered (as in a bird strike) as it just destroyed a full grown human being.

Porter Reese: You shot it. What a bunch of dumb sons of bitches, you *shot* it! A *machine* - you butt-heads!
- Curiosità sui creditiDuring the opening credits,a voiceover of a scientist at a press conference explains the timerider project and what they plan to do.
- Versioni alternativeIn the original theatrical release, Porter Reese was so distracted by the destruction of the motorcycle that he did not notice the approach of the helicopter's tail rotor until it was too late -- there was a scream, a splattering sound, and a shot of empty gore-drenched boots. For the Anchor Bay DVD release, the shot was replaced with a shot of motorcycle wreckage on the ground and a pickup shot of Reese cowering; the audio, however, was not changed. The original sequence is preserved in the laserdisc release as well as the more recent Shout! Factory Blu-ray. The Spanish DVD release preserves the boots scene but entirely omits the sequence where Swann scares the old man to death.
