"Soap" was actually the working title for the show, while the producers tried to come up with a better name, and was used all through pre-production. No better name was ever decided upon, so "Soap" became the formal title when the show went into production.
Early in production, there were problems recording sound for Bob, Chuck's ventriloquist dummy. It was soon discovered that Jay Johnson's schizophrenic performance was so convincing, that the sound man was pointing the microphone at the dummy whenever it had a line.
Originally, Chuck Campbell and his ventriloquist dummy Bob were intended to be short-term guest stars, who were responsible for another character's death, and their stint would have ended with Bob testifying in court against Chuck. The response to Chuck and Bob was so strong, that the identity of the murderer was revised, so they could remain with the series for the rest of its run.
Series creator, producer, and principal writer Susan Harris appeared in season one, episodes fifteen and seventeen as the hooker "Babette".
