Ann Sheridan's last role. She died of cancer on January 21, 1967. Almost two months later CBS cancelled the program. She appeared in only 21 of the 27 episodes.
This series was created as a vehicle to showcase the comedic talents of star Ann Sheridan who, two decades earlier, had been one of the most popular "pin-up girls" of World War II. When Sheridan died of cancer before the first season was completed, the show was not renewed.
Chris Noel had played Lucy in the series pilot which had also featured Jody McCrea as Sheriff Eric. When test audiences responded poorly to these characters the roles were both recast for production of the weekly series: although Universal Television had wanted to retain Noel, CBS-TV insisted she be replaced. "Pistols..." producer Joe Connelly recruited Carole Wells as the new Lucy, apparently recalling her from The All-Night Party (1963). The role of the sheriff - renamed Harold Sikes - was recast with Gary Vinson.
