As of early 2019, the Turner Classic Movies print of this movie is unfortunately cropped on the sides to an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, most likely for early television broadcasts, and is not presented in the wider theatrical aspect ratio of 1.66:1 in which it was shot, and that director Michael Anderson and cinematographer Erwin Hillier originally intended. The Kino Lorber Edition Has the correct Aspect ratio released in April 2021.
On receiving the script, James Cagney said, "A trip to Ireland and a plum role...unbeatable!"
At his interview with director Michael Anderson, Richard Harris initially turned the film down as he felt the part was very minor. He thanked Anderson and was about to leave when he stopped and asked "Incidentally, who's starring in the film?" Anderson quietly replied, "James Cagney". Harris then excitedly shouted at the top of his voice, "I'll do it!". During filming, Harris would come to the set on the days he wasn't working just to watch Cagney work. Harris later said he would be in awe of Cagney.
The ambush and shoot-out location at the Dublin dockside now looks entirely different. A memorial to the victims of the Ireland nineteenth century famine now stands on this site.
