The real John Paul Jones' actual name was John Paul. He added the name "Jones" to avoid prosecution when he was accused of killing a seaman over a dispute of wages.

This was the first of many large-scale movies that producer Samuel Bronston would make in Spain. He had discovered that several American industrial concerns had had money frozen in Spain by the Francisco Franco government and he was able to persuade them to use it to finance filmmaking based in the country; the Du Pont chemical company put up the money for this film.

Robert Stack says in his biography that the shooting in the deep Spanish summer heat was very hard to bear for the crew, because of heavy suits and uniforms to wear. And also the final battle ship sequence took place near the coast line, very close to an area that served as one of the main outlet of the sewage system; the stunt who jumped into the water had to hold their nose.

This was the film debut of Mia Farrow, the daughter of the film's director John Farrow.

This was John Farrow's final film before his death on January 27, 1963, at the age of 58.
